TechCrunch did a good unboxing/hands-on video. The menu looks really fast and responsive.

Voice search and the ASAP feature are two big selling points for me. But it won't be replacing Roku in my den until the roster of apps is beefed up (MLB.TV, Spotify immediately come to mind).

For the Amazon faithful, this is big news. For everyone else, eh. 
I'm quite pleased with the Roku 3.
The only way I'd consider one is if the difference between the Fire TV and the Roku 3 is as great as the difference between the Roku 3 and the Apple TV.

Sort of a newb at streaming as I just cut the cord a few days ago, but would this handle the new WWE or UFC streaming services? So far all I got going is Netflix, Chromecast, and a Ipad. This looks tempting if its a step up.

It looks like MLB.TV is also missing. Both MLB and WWE were including in graphics used during the press conference. So I assume they're coming soon.

I'm curious if this will play mkv, avi, mp4 files from a external hd through the usb port. If it does like on my old WD TV Live unit I would buy one.

This seems nice for people who don't have a streaming device, don't have a proper game console, and do have a Fire tablet. However, for anyone who has a Roku, Chromecast, or Apple TV, or anyone who has a MS/Sony gaming system newer than the original Xbox or PS2, there's nothing compelling here.
The bump in specs over the other streaming devices look good on paper but really are only there to support the games, and I have no interest in Android games on my TV.

Amazon's new Fire TV streaming device shows a lot of potential in bringing together the best features from competing devices and adding voice search on top of that.
But for now, it's largely promise: Many of the best features work with only a handful of video services, which makes Fire TV primarily a showcase for Amazon's video offerings.

Given the review that TheBigDave linked to, people are going to be upset that you can't use voice command on the Netflix app.
I never understand why companies release these products if they're not ready for prime time yet. It's not even a situation like XBox One versus PS4, where you want to hit the same release window as a competitor. Sounds like Amazon jumped the gun on this release about six months early. They could have waited and worked out glitches/added more content.

I powered mine up last night and it immediately downloaded new firmware. The voice command worked well the few times I tried it and the videos load instantly. There doesn't appear to be a way to power the system off manually. But mine did power off during the night. The device itself is really tiny, smaller than I was expecting.

I guess this kills any chance of getting an updated Amazon app for TiVo. I just got a Roamio because I canceled cable and wanted a way to record OTA TV. The integrated search on the TiVo is really nice, but the Amazon app hasn't been updated in years, and it doesn't have Instant. Which doesn't matter that much, since I barely use it and won't be renewing my Prime membership, but still.

Gizmodo has a good review. Seems like they were a unimpressed. They praised the voice search and the quad core speed. But that's about it.

Let's make one thing perfectly clear: if you pay $100 for Amazon Fire TV, you are essentially paying for the speed, voice search, and games (especially the games). If that's what you want, then fine, sure, go for it. But be sure you know what you're getting.
Fire TV will sell well—it's already number one in the Amazon store. But as far as making something that's worth the money, I can't help but wish Amazon had opted for a little bit slower chipset, left out the gaming, and hit that $50 sweet spot. Yes, Fire TV is incredibly cost competitive with Apple TV right now. But that's not the prize it should have its eye on. And ceding the budget field to Chromecast and Roku doesn't feel particularly Amazonian.
Has Fire TV done anything to change the streaming status quo? Less than we might have hoped. If you're full-in on Amazon already, Fire TV does for your stuff what Apple TV does for the OS X and iOS faithful, with a decent gaming experience thrown in as a bonus. But with limited search, no HBO Go, and a price tag that twice as much (or more) as very appealing options, Fire TV doesn't have quite enough spark.

I have Roku 2 XS on my main TV and was considering a stick for upstairs TV. Now I am considering Fire for my main TV and the Roku gets sent upstairs. Not a huge rush, I can wait for a few more reviews, maybe a few more channels. The price difference is small compared to buying a new AVR. How awesome is DD+ really vs a transcode?

The sound on my receiver is up to date, but it doesn't have ARC so I have to use the optical output from my TV to get sound out of it, and Dolby Digital Plus has 'chirping' during any high notes when transcoded down to standard Dolby Digital. I've complained about it to Sharp, but they don't have any real technical people reading their mail so they haven't been any help. Was going to get a Roku for Netflix til I found out on those they break into the end credits of movies, which is totally unacceptable.
