That comes up but doesn't show any "buy" options. Didn't hear anyone on the Facebook groups mention this either (the last ones that were up were talked about all day) so this must've gone really quick.

STILL no 99-cent rental today, wonder if they've decided to discontinue it? Between that and the new interface, I'll likely be using them a lot less.

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane just dropped down to $7.99 (HDX). It was previously something ridiculous like $22.99.

It's a pretty decent teen slasher. A shame it took years to come out on Blu-ray in the United States.

It took years to get any kind of release in the US.

I heard someone mention they saw this at Walmart. It was $25 and included $25 in Vudu credit ($5 credit every month for 5 months).

This is Vudu Spark, Walmart’s very own Chromecast competitor

Add Walmart to the list of companies that’s trying to sell you a Chromecast-like HDMI streaming stick: The retail giant’s Vudu streaming service is getting ready to unveil a HDMI stick dubbed Vudu Spark that is meant to — surprise — give users access to Vudu. The stick popped up in the FCC database this week, which tends to be a good sign that a release is imminent.

The filing, which was done on behalf of the device’s South Korean manufacturer Inktel Corporation, comes with a bunch of unredacted details, including photos of the device as well as a user manual that describes the pretty straightforward functionality of the Spark streaming stick: Upon starting it for the very first time, users have to set up their Wi-Fi network. After that, it automatically launches into the Vudu app.

There is no mention of any other apps or features, so it looks like the Vudu Spark is very much a one-trick pony. The device does come with a remote control to navigate through the on-screen menus of the Vudu app, which uses Zigbee RF as opposed to Wi-Fi Direct, so you shouldn’t expect Miracast or any similar type of mirroring functionality either.

This doesn't make much sense. A streaming stick that's limited to one service? Since the other streaming sticks are in the $35-$50 range, they're going to have to price this pretty cheap. Probably in the $10-$15 range. Or maybe give it away free when you purchase Vudu pre-orders.

I saw the Spark Stick at WalMart today. $24.98 but with a $20 credit (not $25).

Re: The VUDU Thread - News, Bargains & UV Codes

^ Now... the reason I was in WalMart looking at DVDs is because I was looking to see if they had any of these still in stock:

http://i58.tinypic.com/2ilyhc3.jpg
When these titles came out, they were all WalMart exclusives. For $9 (Blu-Ray) or $6 (DVD), you got the movie, an included Vudu code for a digital copy (expires in April 2015), and a 50% off coupon for some other Vudu purchases (coupon now expired). The 20 titles were:

Bull Durham
Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang
Dances With Wolves
Delta Force
Great Escape
Hang 'Em High
Hoosiers
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Platoon
Princess Bride
Red Dawn
Road House
Rob Roy
Robocop
Rocky
Silence Of The Lambs
Spaceballs
Terminator
Usual Suspects
West Side Story

To date, all of these are still Vudu-exclusives, I do not believe any of them are available via D2D, and of the few that you can purchase outright via Vudu all of those cost more than the $9/$6 prices for buying them from a WalMart store. Several folks have reported finding them in the $4.96 clearance bin, making it an even better deal, but that's not the real reason why I went.

Late last year WalMart started their new InstaWatch program. If you buy a physical movie from WalMart and it's an InstaWatch title, you get a digital copy. If you buy it online, or if you buy it at the store and then scan your receipt in to the WalMart app, the title shows up in your Vudu account. All twenty of these titles are part of InstaWatch, so what this means is that if you buy the physical disc you'll end up with the media, an InstaWatch digital copy *AND* a Vudu code for that title. Two digital copies for one purchase.

I didn't find any at my local WalMart, so I went ahead and ordered 7 titles online last night. This morning's email prompted me to link my Vudu and WalMart accounts, and all 7 titles have already shown up... meanwhile the discs and their Vudu codes are still enroute to me.

I wanted to let everyone know that if you're interested in getting any of these specific titles, and can find a buddy who also wants these titles, the two of you could each order half of them and then trade the Vudu codes. I don't want to cross-pollinate this thread with trade requests - we have a standalone DVD Exchange thread for that - but since these twenty titles are all uniquely in this deal, I wanted to go ahead and make the blanket offer.

I will have the following in hand next week:

The Great Escape (Blu-ray)
<strike>The Princess Bride (Blu-ray)</strike> gone
<strike>Rocky (Blu-ray)</strike> gone
Hoosiers (Blu-ray)
<strike>Robocop (1987)</strike> (Blu-ray) gone
<strike>Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (DVD)</strike> gone
Red Dawn (1984) (Blu-ray)

I'm willing to trade my extra Vudu code for them for any of the other MGM WalMart Exclusives, but I'm primarily interested in:

Terminator
Usual Suspects
Platoon
Hang 'Em High
Silence Of The Lambs
Spaceballs
Road House

Let me know if you're interested in swapping codes.

Sounds to me like studios (and Walmart) trying to curb the aftermarket sales of UV codes by cutting out the middleman.

I think that is where it's eventually headed. Amazon could implement a similar program very easily, though they aren't a UV provider.

Back in 2010, Amazon gave out free AIV copies with some DVD/Blu purchases. I got Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Girl Who Played With Fire, Let The Right One In, and Paranormal Activity. They were only SD quality, but I don't know if AIV even offered HD back then.

I don't know why they stopped it. Seems like a great way to promote the AIV service.

According to one of the Vudu Engineers, it's supposed to be a $25 credit. Some of the boxes were improperly labeled. Here's the post from Vudu Forums:

It's $25. It was changed a bit late, and it sounds like the $25 labels didn't make it onto some of the boxes...

On the Vudu Spark page, it confirms the $25 credit ($5/month for 5 months).

Anyone know if the Vudu Spark supports 3D? That'd be my only reason to get one.

After getting my first 'smart TV' I remember getting free rentals of Blu-Rays I'd just ordered from Amazon, but I didn't watch them since the quality was crap (it's gotten better since then, but I still wouldn't waste time watching something digitally that I'd just bought on disc.)

Those early freebies tended to be in SD for some bone-headed reason.

That much is apparent, though while WalMart is completing their transition from media that includes UV codes toward media that are part of InstaWatch, there are a few titles that fall into both categories for a few months still - and many of those are not only exclusive to this retailer but can only be had digitally if you buy from them before all of them go OOS. It's a loophole that will be closed by Summer, but it's one that folks should know about IMO.

In the DVD exchange thread, there's an individual that is trying to find someone with a spare Terminator HDX Vudu code. If he had a reason to put together a $50 ship-to-home order, he could get that title, the InstaWatch version, and could trade the included code to a 2nd party for a different WalMart exclusive title.

Good to know, thanks.

I wonder if the credit is automatically posted to your account or if you get a sequence of codes mailed to you - once a month - for you to enter to redeem. The latter makes more sense, as it would give the end user a chance to forget about the credit, decreasing WalMart's cost and fractionally increasing the Spark's profitability. For me, if it's a monthly emailed code, I would have to worry whether my account can have any more $5 credits applied to it - I got a shit load of them a couple of years ago and I'm fairly certain I'm maxed-out when it comes to normal code-based service credits.

I have no need for the Spark itself, though if the credits are guaranteed, there's no reason why I wouldn't get it as a freebie and just toss it in my travel bag. I'm certain I can come up with $25 in HD2D conversions.

Re: The VUDU Thread - News, Bargains & UV Codes

I received my WalMart.com order a couple of days ago... All 7 of the titles appeared in my Vudu account via InstaWatch within 24 hours of the order being submitted online. Things went pretty smoothly except for two hiccups:

* WalMart or Vudu screwed up and gave me the 2014 version of Robocop instead of the 1987 version that I ordered. I opened a service ticket within Vudu, took 'em a day to pass it to marketing, and 3 days after that I got an email to tell me that they had fixed the problem. So now I've got HDX versions of BOTH Robocop movies.
* Except for Princess Bride, all of the DVD cases came with Vudu codes (expire 5/20/14) for the same movie. They shipped me the wrong version of Princess Bride - I got the 25th anniversary version which came with NO Vudu code. They've sent me an RMA label to return the Blu-Ray and have re-shipped the (hopefully) correct version. Interestingly enough, they did NOT remove the movie from Vudu when I opened a return, and I got a 2nd email telling me that my "new" InstaWatch version of Princess Bride had been added to my Vudu account. :)

So for $60 I got 7 movies, 7 digital copies automatically loaded into my Vudu locker, 6 tradable Digital Copies in-hand, and possibly a 7th tradable copy en-route.

Ken, you might become the first person I have to block on DVDTalk. I have too many movies already, but your posts in this thread make me want to go on a Walmart spree of epic proportions.

Re: The VUDU Thread - News, Bargains & UV Codes

Lol

Well... only because these MGM titles aren't available digitally through any other channel EXCEPT WalMart, and that each of them come with a 2nd copy to share, that's the primary reason for me to keep pounding on this list of 20 titles.

BTW, if you want any/all of the three digital copies I haven't distributed yet (Great Escape, Hoosiers, or Red Dawn '74), and are planning to hit WalMart let me know and I'll set them aside for you. I'll be happy to swap them for any of the other MGM titles on my list you might pick up. :)

I pretty much hate wrestling and will almost definitely never watch these; yet I'll probably 'buy' them all.

The Night Of Champions show is mostly junk. But that 2k15 Showcase has some excellent matches. It seems to mostly focus on CM Punk and HBK.
