Netflix Streaming is not a first run service like HBO/Cinemax/EPIX. Not yet at least (though it was never intended to be). They do occasionally get some new movies through their Epix deal and some through their Marvel/Disney deal. ie: They got Catching Fire about 8 months after release, I assume the same will happen for Mockingjay Pt 1. Unfortunately since Avengers is no longer on Netflix I can't give you an estimate as to how long it'll be before the sequel shows up on Netflix. The biggest semi-current movie Netflix has on it is probably How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Sorry. I meant digital. I currently subscribe to physical, but I am thinking about switching to digital. I was wondering if I could then drop my physical subscription, but it sounds like I probably shouldn't drop it. Thanks.

Yeah if you want new movies as well as a huge back catalog, you need both.

Netflix' DVD subscription is much more comprehensive than its streaming service. Just because a title is released to DVD doesn't mean it will show up on Netflix streaming. Not by a long shot. If you want access to just about everything, you will have to keep the DVD subscription. Only a fraction of titles released on DVD becomes available on streaming.

Cool thanks. Why do people act like physical media is about to die then if Netflix's streaming options are so few compared to their physical options?

Also, as long as a title is available on disc, that disc will probably be available for rental, and probably long after that, until Netflix runs out of usable copies.

Titles tend to come and go on streaming, as contacts expire.

Because you can rent streaming versions or buy digital copies of new movies on Amazon, Vudu, iTunes, and many others. You can buy many of them a couple of weeks before the blu-ray/DVD go on sale. Too pricey for me. I still have my blu-ray by mail subscription.

Because a lot of people don't care and just surf around looking for something to watch. It's the lazy-channel-surfing of the modern generation. I mean, chances are you can find something you wanted to watch at some point in your life. It's just not good if you have a specific title in mind.

Yes, there are many ways to get your titles digitally depending on how badly you want them. I also use the BD-by-mail, though some people call me a dinosaur for it. I've never purchased or rented a new release on iTunes or Amazon or Comcast, though I have gotten some via Xbox credits.

My preschooler had a meltdown yesterday morning when I had to break the news that Scooby-Doo was removed from the catalog.

Damn you, Netflix!

Mine just learned to ask for "Amazon" when the Aardman stuff was dropped from Netflix and added to Prime Streaming.

I passed on that news to my son. He still wants his Scooby-Doo back.

But I think this news is awesome. Maybe Odenkirk will finally be able to move his office out of that nail salon.

Yeah, and I still want the DCAU back. But hey, Netflix has to cater to more people than your son and me .

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

I'm surprised there isn't a lot of discussion about the X-Files now streaming seasons 1 and 2 in HD!!!! With other seasons to follow.

While it's not a BD release, it's certainly the next best thing and watching the Pilot and Deep Throat last night was truly a surreal experience. I would never have imagined EVER getting to see these show again like this. It's like a brand new experience this time around.

I was happy when we got all the Gilmore Girls seasons in HD, but this is really a big, big deal for me. The X-Files is basically tied with Buffy as my two favorite shows of all time. Maybe Buffy will be next.

I may have missed an announcement, but did Netflix drop 5.1 support for Roku? I can't seem to be find it as an option anymore, but it was definitely there before. Pretty annoying.

Nope. Skimmed it on my Roku 3, most everything had a Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 track on it. Tested it and they work as advertised.

if you have a soundbar, 5.1 doesn't work/register for netflix. if you have a regular sound set up, go to settings and audio

Zombeavers. Hey, you didn't give any indication of what type of movies you like.

I know it's a series but Daredevil was very enjoyable.
