Netflix isn’t going out of business is it, in 2019? My mom said she read some article in newspaper, but I would have heard and would have been on the news...

Netflix signed another big TV producer to a development deal. Marti Noxon. Most of you probably know her from her days on Buffy.

That's in addition to Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes.

Now we have to wait and see who gets their 1st show to air.

But, man Netflix is blowing through cash like crazy. Would not shock me if we see another price change in a year or two.

I always figured House of Cards was an inside joke about Netflix's financials.

In other anime news they got the rights to stream Neon Genesis Evangelion (the original series and movies). Those have pretty much been out of print on DVD since a bit before ADV went under, so it blows my mind that there's a newer generation of anime fans who never saw it. Though by now everyone knows what the tv ending is so you don't have the shock value as the first time someone watched it.

I think this is a great acquisition by Netflix. Takes it away from Funimation and Crunchyroll and gives them some legitimacy to what they are trying to accomplish in terms of Anime to their service.

In other other news, Netflix is hiking their rates in Canada.

The two stream HD package is now going from $10.99 to $13.99. It rose, about a year and a half ago, from $9.99 to $10.99. 4K 4 stream will go from $13.99 to $16.99.

So wihin a 2 year period, we're looking at a 40% hike.

I still think it's worth it, as I watch it quite a bit, but that's a pretty substantial increase.

I'm getting Netflix for free through some T-Mobile promotion, and they ate the last price increase, although I had to make up the difference to upgrade to the UHD 4 stream package. I'm not sure how long T-Mobile wants to be on the hook for each Netflix price increase though.

I noticed that movies and series that were in 5.1 sound are now in 2.0 sound and wonder if NetFlix changed something. For anyone else with a surround sound setup, has 5.1 channel surround seemed to have disappeared from your NetFlix account?

Roku Ultra (model 4660)

I can verify if audio is 2.0 or 5.1 via my AV receiver's information screen and programs that were 5.1 surround last month are now just listed as 2.0 stereo. And I have the "Standard HD" streaming plan at NetFlix so maybe they changed things and made 5.1 only available on the "Premium UHD" streaming plan.

You might be on to something. Netflix is currently carrying about $8 billion in debt and planning on issuing an additional $2 billion in junk bonds.

I think we would have heard something if that was the case, I'd offer to check but I do have the UHD plan.

Given that NetFlix requires a "Premium UHD" streaming plan to get Dolby Atmos ( https://help.netflix.com/en/node/64066 ), I think maybe they have quietly made that a requirement to also get 5.1 discrete surround sound.

The funny thing is that I'm now set up for Dolby Atmos in my surround sound system (5.1.2) but I didn't switch over to "Premium UHD" because NetFlix Atmos support isn't on Roku yet (and I don't have a 4K UHD TV so don't need that support now). But if I now need it to get discrete 5.1, I'll go ahead and switch plans. Having 4 simultaneous screens would work well for us too.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

I figured it out!

Because I had set up the Roku Ultra with the surround sound system turned off, I decided to try the following steps:

(1) I turned on the AV receiver and left it on for the all of these steps
(2) I removed the microSD card from the Roku (note I checked and just doing that alone made no difference)
(3) I did a factory reset of the Roku
(4) I made sure the "Settings" -> "Audio" menu was set to Auto-detect surround sound
(5) I set up NetFlix again on the Roku and now it clearly saw that my system was 5.1 surround capable
(6) I set up the remaining Roku channels
(7) I reformated and re-installed the microSD card in the Roku

Now the Roku works correctly in identifying 5.1 content and streaming it to my AV receiver. I think doing the setup with the AV receiver on and detected during the setup was key.

Yeah, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X have been great, but the funny thing is I never intended to setup my system for them at all. I needed a new AV receiver last year and bought a model that just happened to have Atmos/DTS-X capabilities in a 2017 Black Friday sale. I still only planned for a 5.1 setup but when I had the rear speakers wall-mounted a few months ago, my black satellite speakers stood out too much on the wall so I had to get white satellite speakers then to replace them for aesthetic reasons. Doing that left me with a spare pair of black satellite speakers so I went ahead and repurposed them as the front height speakers. I then set my Blu-ray players for bitstream output and everything worked. Even though I only have a handful of Blu-ray discs with Atmos encoded on them (and just 2 with DTS-X), it really does sound great. The rest of the time, I just let either the "new" Dolby Surround or DTS Neural-X create height channels from 5.1/7.1 sources which does fill in the front with sound.

And I decided to go ahead and upgrade to NetFlix Premium UHD for the 4 simultaneous streaming screens. Having only 2 caused a few problems and it only cost $3 more, so what the hell. Hopefully, Atmos support shows up on the Roku soon from NetFlix and that'll give another reason for the upgrade.

I’m sure it’s here somewhere, but how many people can I share my account with and in different houses. My mom and dad use it now, but also wanted trusted friend to as well...
