Re: The Roku Thread
Roku just unveiled 4 new models.. Well, 2 new models, 1 updated older model, and 1 current model with a feature removed and a new product #.
http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/3379/pgqx.png Roku LT (Model# 2700R) is functionally identical to the current Roku LT (#2400D) but with a couple of updates. Gone is the 3-in-1 pigtail for component video and analog stereo, replaced with standard Red/White/Yellow RCA jacks. The former remote was either Star-only or Star plus dedicated Netflix, Pandora and Crackle buttons - the new one includes Star, Replay, and 4 colored shortcut buttons (presumably user-configurable). It's bigger (3.7x3.7x1.5" vs 3.3x3.3x0.9"), heavier (3.5oz v 3.0oz), draws more power (3.5W v 2.0W) and has a different AC adapter (12v 0.5a vs 5.2v 1.0a). They also removed dual-band Wifi functionality for some reason. The new Roku 1 (#2710R) is the same as the new LT, but adds full 1080p support (LT goes to 720p). The new Roku 2 (#2720R) is the same as the Roku 1, but adds a wireless earphone jack to the remote and restores dual-band connectivity. The Roku 3 (new model #2730R) is the same as the current Roku 3 (#4200), except that apparently it only supports 720p/1080p - 480p appears to have been deleted. It also has the Game/Motion remote (so no shortcut buttons). Pricing is LT=50, R1=60, R2=80, R3=100. |

Re: The Roku Thread
They should have come up with better names. Calling those boxes Roku 1 & Roku 2 is just going to confuse people with previous gen models.

Re: The Roku Thread
Looks like they're also going to be updating the main menu. They've partnered with M-Go which is a streaming service similar to Vudu. They're integrating M-Go into the menu by adding a Movies and TV Shows section. Billing will be handled directly through your Roku account.
We’re also introducing the M-GO movie and TV store, integrated directly on our home screen menu in the U.S. for easy and instant access to their great selection of movies and TV shows including Hangover 3, The Croods, Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Glee and even fall-premiering shows like Brooklyn 9-9 starring Andy Samberg. To make it even simpler, the M-GO service features direct billing with a Roku account so users can rent or buy through M-GO without any extra account setup. The movie and TV show shortcuts powered by M-GO will be available in the U.S. on the new Roku LT, Roku 1 and Roku 2 players, and will automatically roll out as a free software update beginning in October to all current-generation Roku devices – the Roku LT (models 2400 and 2450), Roku HD (model 2500), Roku 2 HD, Roku 2 XD, Roku 2 XS and Roku 3 players as well as the Roku Streaming Stick. http://blog.roku.com/blog/2013/09/25/newrokufamily/ |
Re: The Roku Thread
^well, it's a good thing I don't have a CC linked to my Roku account - I could see my kid racking up a bunch of unauthorized purchased. :)
|
Re: The Roku Thread
I mean Pay channels like movie channels, you don't really pay Roku for Netflix and Amazon, for instance. Premium channels, per se, where you pay for content only available through Roku, i.e. movies.
|
Re: The Roku Thread
Pay Channels include: Instant Watch Browser, Movie Vault, BabyFirstTV, Classic Westerns, Nowhere Cast, The Streaming Bible, House of Horrors, Timeless Toons (monthly), etc;
Kind of like any other App Store out there. Just billed through Roku instead of direct. I own You Don't Know Jack but that's a game. |
Re: The Roku Thread
If you're talking about those, then the only pay channel I've ever bought is the Instant Watch Browser For Netflix.
If you use Netflix, it's worth every penny. |
Re: The Roku Thread
That's what I mean, anyone here buy into those and how do they like them :) I have Netflix, Hulu+, and Amazon. Haven't tried the pay channels but would be all over it if you could buy into HBO2Go and Showtime2Go without having them in your cable lineup.

Re: The Roku Thread
Just picked up the Roku 3 a couple of days ago and I'm LOVING the ability to connect ear buds to the remote. I'm hearing impaired and this the first time in a very long time that I've been able to watch TV without relying on captions, and can now hear background music, whispers, footsteps and other audio subtleties that I've missed in my favorite shows.
Shaking my head at having stuck with TWC for so long. |
Re: The Roku Thread
I've had my Roku 3 for a while now and I have to say the thing is still pretty awesome despite some shortcomings.
Hoping for a Netflix interface update still, but man what a great product. |
Re: The Roku Thread
Im wondering why no update to ad 3D NF content yet.
|
Re: The Roku Thread
I was able to get the 3D NF content to run on my Roku 2 XS but it was through my AVR that doesn't pass 3D so I am unsure if it was actually doing anything... I am yet to try to connect direct to my TV to see if it is indeed 3D.. (I searched "3D" on Netflix on my Roku and found a "demo" vid in case you are wonder what content)..

Re: The Roku Thread
Roku just added the PlayCast channel. This works with PlayOn software and streams videos from your PC browser to your TV. The PlayOn plug-in adds a small button at the top of your browser. When you start playing a video, click the button and it sends the video to your Roku.
I tried it out on an episode at StarTrek.com (CBS) and also streamed an embedded YouTube video here on the DVDTalk Forum. Both worked well. The quality was about what you would expect from streaming video embeds. Haven't tried any HD videos yet. Overall, it's pretty cool. I'm not sure how often I would use it. But I like having the option. And it's a great added feature for PlayOn owners. http://www.playon.tv/playcast http://www.roku.com/channels/#!details/28559/playcast |
Re: The Roku Thread
Disney and ESPN have been added to Roku. Needs Cable authentication (obviously) includes "Watch Live TV" feature.

The Disney channels are coming in the next 2 weeks. It will be the same as the AppleTV apps. In addition to the Live TV, there's also a couple made-for-TV movies and TV show episodes (about 5-10 random episodes from each series). Here's more info: http://blog.roku.com/blog/2013/11/12...nnel-and-more/ |
Re: The Roku Thread
According to the Roku Forum's support rep, these new ESPN/Disney channels won't be available on the first-gen Roku models:
Minimum Firmware Required: v5.2 (2700x - 2720x) or v5.1 (all other platforms). The N1000 and other legacy Roku products (XDS, etc) are firmware 3.x only. They can't be upgraded to 5.x. |

Re: The Roku Thread
I noticed the ESPN channel tonight.
It's nice to add ESPN3 to my tv. Will save a trip to my computer for those once in a while games. Didn't have to authenticate for ESPN3 but did for the others. |

Re: The Roku Thread
Oh, I saw the ESPN channel, but I thought I wouldn't be able to see any of it since I don't have a cable account for it----forgot about ESPN3! That's definitely a nice free addition for some HD sports live and replay. Some decent world soccer leagues on there, and the quality is quite good.

Re: The Roku Thread
Roku 2 XD is $39.99 + Free Shipping at 1SaleADay. This is a Factory Refurb unit with a 90-Day Warranty. Decent price for a 1080p streamer.

Re: The Roku Thread
Just got a full system update on my Roku 3 (after manually checking for updates). Not sure what changed, but the Roku animation is a little different and I now have the new version of Netflix (which I can confirm has Profiles)
It's visually a big relief and while not as flashy as the new PS3 version (which has a few menu animations/fade-ins/fade-outs) it's about a thousand times better than the previous app. Also, unlike the Hulu app was at first, it runs very well. Also new, also from the PS3/Xbox360 versions, it auto-plays the next episode after about 15 seconds. Overall, a pretty fantastic update  |
Re: The Roku Thread
Just checked my Roku 3, and it must have auto-updated earlier today. Hopefully the update will eventually come to the 2nd gen Roku boxes.
I like the new Netflix interface. The profiles feature will help me organize my humongous queue. And I especially like the new TV Show listings. Makes it much easier to browse for a particular episode. The search engine is a big improvement too. M-Go is offering 2 Free HD Rentals when you sign-up. They're also Ultraviolet compatible, so UV collections should import to the Library. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble connecting it to my UV account, so I haven't been able to try it out yet. https://www.MGO.com/Offer |
