And speaking of which, I watched my first cricket match the other day. Man, I thought RUGBY was confusing..... |
Re: The Roku Thread
Thanks. I was afraid of that, I have basic cable tv with no ESPN. But the ESPN3 stuff might be cool, as I think ultimate frisbee is occasionally featured (a sport I used to play competitively but am now retired from).

Re: The Roku Thread
Well I just pulled a boneheaded move this morning and fried my Roku 2 XS.
I was doing some network maintenance last week and my 2XS kept reconnecting to the WiFi every time it was up - as did 3-4 other network appliances here in the house. I was monkeying around with the static IP tables and having these puppies continue to grab addresses on their own was interfering with my work so I just shut them all down... for the Roku, that meant pulling the plug. This morning, seeing that the 2XS wasn't powered, I reached into the cabinet and connected the line. Thing is, I also had a disconnected Logitech Revue in the same cabinet, and both devices use the same diameter power adapter. So the 2XS got a jolt of 12V 2A power rather than 5.2V 1.2A and down it went. It's dead, Jim. Time to get get another device. Too bad, the 2XS had everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. Of all the released models, this was my "perfect" one. Roku has discontinued the model, so it's off to eBay. |

Re: The Roku Thread
Got an email from Roku offering these deals. They claim it's exclusive for Roku customers. But it might just be early access to the Black Friday prices:
Roku 3 - $79.99 Roku 2 - $63.99 Roku LT - $31.99 all with Free Shipping |

Re: The Roku Thread
Thank you to the individuals that over the weekend pointed out the sales on the Roku 2. We ordered one and have already received a shipping notice from amazon

Re: The Roku Thread
I have a question, is the new Netflix interface update only for the Roku 3?
I have 2 Rokus, one in my bedroom is a Roku 2 XD that I bought over a year ago. It's still the old interface. I bought a Roku 3 to replace an old Roku 1 model in another room and that machine already updated to the new Netflix interface, which I really like. |
Re: The Roku Thread
I thought I read someplace that the Roku 2 interface would be updated at some point... but not 100% if that was just wishful thinking.
|
Re: The Roku Thread
woot! has the reconditioned Roku 3 for $64.99 + shipping today. I bought my first Roku (reconditioned) through them a couple of years back and never had a problem with it. It looked brand new, too.

Re: The Roku Thread
What's the deal with my Roku 2 suddenly saying it needs an SD card? I didn't add any channels. Is a cache filling up?
|
Re: The Roku Thread
One of the reasons that I bought the recently released Roku 2 instead of the Roku 3 is the new Netflix interface (link #1 , link #2) that was launched on many different devices on Nov 13 excluding any Roku device that is not a Roku 3.
To some members at the Roku forum, the new Netflix interface is a downgrade. I deliberately chose a Roku 2 so that we could continue to use the previous Netflix interface. In that second link for the cnet article is a statement that claims that over the upcoming months that other devices such as other Roku models will get the new interface. But some people at that forum argue that the Roku models other than the Roku 3 don't have the hardware capability of being able to run the new Netflix interface. "New Netflix Version - Missing Features (downgrade)" http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=64781 "New Netflix Experience on Roku 3: Issues" http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=64626 "Netflix ruined from new UI with Post-Play :-(" http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=64686 "R3 My Channels graphics bug" http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55029 And here's a point of view in support of the new interface: http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=65138 "Conversely, the new Netflix may get me to buy another Roku 3 ahead of my normal yearly upgrade. I normally buy one roku each year and cycle the older ones through my TVs in other rooms. The new Netflix is such an improvement in my household (profiles, casting target and new UI) that I'm contemplating buying another Roku3 to update one of my older TVs." |
Re: The Roku Thread
The old Netflix interface was one of the bigger deterrents in me buying a Roku initially. The fact it couldn't play seamlessly into the next episode on TV shows was also annoying, it was difficult to navigate with so few options fitting on the screen, getting additional information was also a pain. Simply put, it was cheesy and archaic.
New interface and the addition of Post-Play fixed all that, I'm loving it  (I no longer have to switch to my PS3 to get a decent Netflix experience.) I just hope Amazon takes a hint and updates their UI, it was actually worse than the older Netflix one. Are people seriously complaining about the lack of a screen saver now? |
Re: The Roku Thread
Roku LT Streaming Media Player (2700R) is gonna be an Amazon Lightning Deal at 3AM EST.

Re: The Roku Thread
Perhaps some will think this question should be in a more tech oriented thread but I have a Roku XS (series 2 model) that I bought about a year ago as a refurbished. Looked new with the exception of two remote control batteries (Duracell I recall) that showed a use before date of a year or more earlier. So far, really like it but on occasion it will freeze. I mean really freeze, like pull the power to cycle type freeze. Is this something others may have experienced or is this a "refurbed" issue??
Thanks, Rick |

Anyways, here's my post from 2011. A couple people were having the same problem. http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=43972 |
Re: The Roku Thread
Official YouTube App finally added (Roku 3)
|
Re: The Roku Thread
yeah, only to Roku 3. This company's loyalty to older models if fucking atrocious.
|
Re: The Roku Thread
The Roku 3 gets it first because it was built from the ground up to support HTML 5-based applications, the full dev hasn't been completed for the Roku 2 or earlier models yet, but they've already committed to getting it pushed out there. It isn't an uncommon thing, of course they could have just pulled an Apple and held off the release until it was ready for all platforms, but it's Christmas time and they can't seem like they've abandoned the Roku 3 as well.
The Roku 3 updates (for Netflix and now YouTube) started less than a month ago (28 days). Of course Roku 1 owners are just SOL, that's an antique in the tech world. Did Roku never push out the Roku 3 interface for the Roku 2? ...and I'm not going to lie, they kind of screwed themselves with the 15 different Roku models before the 3 showed up. |
