I think SDK may have been the wrong term, but basically it uses some new features added with that latest firmware update. The autoplay between episodes is also much improved.

And it makes the Netflix app look embarrassingly out dated.

I love Hulu on the PS3, so I'm glad to see it's been updated on the Roku. Netflix definitely needs to upgrade to the PS3 interface, because their Roku interface is decidedly unimpressive.

Anyone else not having their most recently watched in progress show not coming up anymore in the new Hulu app? Other than that it's fantastic.

There is no pop-up anymore, which I'm okay with.

I'm tempted to get that just to have in the bedroom on our small 32'' (if that) TV we have in there.

We had that higher end full HD model with the motion remote (I forget what the model number is) in there but I moved it to the living room to use it to watch Game of Thrones on our large TV since we currently do not have HBO.

Re: The Roku Thread

I just got the Roku 3 today as a Father's day gift and spent about an hour setting it up before I had to go to work. The only issue I can see so far (other than not having Starz or Showtime channels) is the remote. I tried Angry Birds (not that I care to ever play the game but I was curious how it worked) and found the motion aspect of the remote really hard to use and bad. I would call the game unplayable. So my question is: is it just this game or could there be something wrong with the remote?

Out of curiosity, other than the remote, is there a difference between the 2 XD and the 3?

USB Port and substantially faster processor.

Re: The Roku Thread

Is anyone else having an issue getting 5.1 with Amazon Instant/Prime? I can get it with Netflix no problem but never with Amazon even when it states as having 5.1 in the description. I honestly can't remember if I ever did get 5.1 as I rarely used it compared to Netflix but no matter what I try I can never get anything other than normal surround with it.

I have the 2 XS by the way.

In addition to the USB port and faster processor, the Roku 3 uses Wifi Direct which is required for Miracast (similar to Apple's Airplay). I don't know if they'll ever get those features implemented. But if they do, it'll be pretty cool.

Good to know, thanks! I've been loving the 3 in my living room, and was considering getting another one for my bedroom. Between Plex, PlayOn, Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, and HBO Go, I can play almost anything I can imagine.

Are you playing them directly through the Roku? I never had much luck with that.

Have you checked out Plex? It works really well at playing MKVs. And it keeps all your video files organized.

If you have a Synology NAS, there's now a Roku Channel for DS Video. I played around with it a little and it seems to work well.

Re: The Roku Thread

Roku app now beams videos from your iOS device to your TV

The 2.3 update expands on the “Play on Roku” feature introduced back in September 2012. That feature let you stream music and display photos from your iOS or Android device on your TV via a Roku device. On Thursday, the company added video to the mix—for iOS users only right now—allowing streaming of videos in your iOS device’s Camera Roll.

That means you can play anything you’ve shot with your iOS device—family ballet recitals and 15-second Instagram video masterpieces, say—but not TV shows or movies you’ve synced with your iPhone. Which makes it somewhat less useful than the Apple TV’s AirPlay streaming, but still a pretty cool addition.

I tried out the new feature with a Roku 3—Roku 2, 3, LT, HD, and Streaming Stick models support the new capability—and it worked as expected. I just launched the app, tapped the Play on Roku button, and tapped Video at the bottom of the list. From there, I was presented with Instagram and Camera Roll folders to choose from. I picked a video to play, and after a brief Exporting notification, the video played on the HDTV in the TechHive offices clear as day.

Encourage everyone to check out the new DOCURAMA channel. It has a lot of docs you can't find on Netflix or Amazon Prime. They do have a subscription option, or you can just watch for free...but your movie will be interrupted every 10 minutes or so with an ad.

I highly recommend checking out DREAMS WITH SHARP TEETH - the documentary on Harlan Ellison that came about 5 years ago.

Wow, really loving that Sky News channel---a major, live streaming 24/7 news channel is a great addition when you don't have cable.

Weird. I have a Synology NAS, Video Station installed on it and it's already indexed my TV collection. My Roku2 XS is clearly linked to my online account and it (the online acct) confirms that the DS_Video channel has been installed.... yet I can't get the channel to actually appear. I've even gone into the Channel Store to add an unrelated channel just to prompt it to downloading pending channels and no joy.

Are you aware of any limitations for the channel itself as far as specific Roku models it's supposed to work with? I can't find any into on Roku.com that would tell me that it won't work with my device.
