I'm thinking of ditching my Firestick. What is the best Roku 4K device these days? The Stick+ seems pricey.

Isn't it only like $8 more than the equivalent Fire stick?

Roku Stick+ is $58.97 on Amazon. I got the Firestick for $35 or so.

Too bad you didn't get the Roku Ultra last Black Friday. It was only $50. Really solid 4K streaming. I'm sure they will discount it again this year.

Re: The Roku Thread

I can wait until this BF. It’s not urgent. I got rid of a cable box and was just going to move some of my other sticks around. So I was going to put something new in my theatre room.

Roku seems to be less affected by drama with the big corporations.

Put a CamelCamelCamel alert on it. It's been sub $50 a few times over the past few months.

Thanks. I’m aware of all that. It’s not really what I was asking. Unless the Stick+ is what you’re recommending?

If it's going to be you main device for streaming, I say go for the Ultra. It's worth the price. I picked up another one last week because the Fire Cube is a cube of shit.

If it's not your main device, the Stick+ is a good purchase.

You complained about the price. I was pointing out if you are in no hurry, out the watch on it and buy when cheaper. Yes, it is the best value of all their products. Hopefully that answers what you are asking.

Stick+ is my main streaming device and I have zero problems with it.

I agree. Especially if you can run a cable to your router. It's the only model with an ethernet port. Even though I have a strong and fast wifi connection, I find that I have less problems when I use a wired connection.

^This (the ethernet port) is why I have an Ultra on my main TV, and I'm going to buy another for my office TV.

Roku is introducing a smart soundbar, as well as a subwoofer accessory: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbrea...setup-ifa-2019

The good news is it'll be for any TV, not just Roku TVs. I love the wireless Roku speakers I got on sale earlier this year. Granted, I'm not an audiophile, but they sound great to me. And pairing them with my TCL was a breeze. This soundbar seems pretty nifty if you don't already have a Roku.

TheBigDave 09-04-19 10:59 AM

Re: The Roku Thread

I was hoping the subwoofer would be a little cheaper ($100-$125).

Too bad you can't use the soundbar as a center channel with the current speakers as front L/R. Then add another pair of speakers for surround sound. With the subwoofer, that would give you a decent 5.1 system. It seems like that's something they could do with a software update.

DJLinus 09-04-19 11:28 AM

Re: The Roku Thread

Oh, totally. It seems like a no brainer for them to do a whole system you could build piecemeal. Maybe they will in the future. I'd also like it if they made a cheaper version of the soundbar that isn't smart for those who already have a Roku.

I'm going to update my Roku stick that's about three years old if any of these new devices are on sale on Black Friday.

Yeah, I've been planning to buy an additional Roku Ultra for the TV in my home office, so I'll just wait a little longer and see if there are deals on the new one during the holidays.

Re: The Roku Thread

So the Ultra still seems like their top of the line. I’m glad I won’t be tempted to get anything newer.

I just got a Roku Ultra last Black Friday for $50. It was the 2018 model. So there's no need for me to upgrade right now. It's top of the line and still working great.

Does anyone use the remote pre-programmed "hotkeys" outside of accidentally pressing them?

E Unit 09-20-19 12:41 PM

Re: The Roku Thread

Yep, I do.

Re: The Roku Thread

The hot keys are mostly useless to me. Have basically never had 3 of the 4 services, and always forget about the other one. I understand they probably get paid by the companies to have them on the remote, but why not add a couple programmable ones?

The new Ultra model is adding two programmable hotkeys.

Yeah this is why I asked. I saw this new feature is coming. 3 of the 4 buttons on my remote are services I have and I still don't use them.
