Re: The Roku Thread

The Roku Channel has started rolling out. Free ad-supported movies from major Hollywood studios. There's about 20-40 movies in each genre. It's a pretty good selection of titles, almost all are mainstream films.

Re: The Roku Thread

I really hope Roku announces their new products soon. That Amazon Fire TV new dongle pretty much checks all the boxes if you want HDR+4K at a cheap price.

They went Public yesterday at $14/share, currently are at $28.25/share

Now they have money, they better start pouring out the features.

Re: The Roku Thread

So they did announce their new products: https://www.wired.com/story/roku-201...up-4k-players/

Looks like I'll be getting streaming stick+. Checks all the boxes, does 4K + HDR. Cheaper than the Ultra, but I don't need the USB/MicroSD stuff.

Down to 23.50 today. Don't be surprised to see it hit below 20 soon.

Unless you were prepared to invest heavily don't feel so bad.

I upgraded to a streaming stick last year and I'm really happy with it, but I may upgrade to the new stick if they have some good deals during the Christmas shopping season. My mom and dad still have two Roku SEs that were released on Black Friday 2015 for $25 and they still work great. I streamed NFL Redzone on one for close to seven hours on Sunday and the picture quality looked great. I really like Roku products. They always seem to stream better than other devices.

Re: The Roku Thread

If you like cooking shows, check out the Genius Kitchen channel.

https://channelstore.roku.com/detail...genius-kitchen

They have classic episodes of Iron Chef Japan, Nigella Lawson, Anthony Bourdain, Mario Batali, etc. It's free and doesn't require a cable/satellite provider.

Agreed...I just wish/hope they obtain more episodes of each show. Oh yeah, Nigella better watch her back with Sophie Dahl on the channel.

Oh damn, thanks for the heads up on this one! I was telling my wife just a couple of days ago how I missed watching the original Iron Chef, so it's awesome they have some episodes. Doesn't hurt to have Nigella, Bourdain, and Dahl with their shows as well.

It looks like episodes are available for a limited time. And when they expire, other episodes will be listed. So they won't have full seasons, just a dozen or so episodes at a time.

It's run by Scripps Network, which owns Food Network and the Cooking Channel. So they have a huge library of shows available.

I hope they add some more classic Food Network stuff like 30 Minute Meals, Semi-Homemade Cooking and Good Eats.

Re: The Roku Thread

Can you play 4k UHD on Google Play movies w/ Roku? I have Streaming Stick+ (this year's model) and when I pull up Google Play movies, it just says HD. I tried playing a movie and it didn't look like UHD 4k as compared to running the Google Play app built into my Sony TV.

I still think the stock is very overpriced but for those taking a nice profit on it kudos. Still not really even sure what the hell its value is based on, although look at Amazon for proof that such things are irrelevant when it comes to stock pricing.

Re: The Roku Thread

18 million shares @ $14 a piece was their initial value. That'd put them at about $252 million valuation which is about right.

The rest is just hype like any other stock, people think Roku has a chance to take over in several areas and are hopping on that train. It'll all come crashing to earth, GoPro style, if they don't manage to sustain their numbers. Investors buy on prospective growth, not actual numbers.

Amazon dominates and are very profitable but they don't pull in Apple-style incomes (it's like $2.8b income for Amazon vs. $48.35b for Apple, though Apple is the most highly valued stock on the market so that doesn't surprise me -- and by a wide, wide margin), but more importantly Amazon AWS is crushing it in growth. That's reflected in their stock prices though (Amazon's Market Cap is $548.03B, Apples is $878B)
