Probably because Amex charges the merchant 1% or more to accept the card than Visa/MC/Disc - can get pretty costly I would guess...

I got it too, It's pretty clear from this, along with some other recent experiences I've had at the site recently, that they have become a seller's market, so I have no intention of updating anything.
