I was thinking about preordering some DVDs from Buy.com and i wanted to use that $10 off $30 that ends 9/5. I don't have enough in my Webcertificates account now to cover the movies and I'm not sure I want to rely on Buy.com to put out another similar coupon before the DVD comes out in October. So my question is do they charge for the preorder right away when you order or wait until it ships?

Buy.com charges you when the DVD ships.

One of the best things about Buy (unlike its competition!) is that they charge per order--not per shipment.

Say you order 10 pre-order items that are shipped one per week. Buy would charge a total of $11.50, while other vendors that charge per shipment would charge close to $30--quite a difference!

I don't know about this, but I tried to place the preorder of a couple movies and it was turned down. Said the transaction wasn't authorized by my credit card company due to lack of funds. So I don't know, I was using a Webcertificate in advance of earning the total amount, but it seems like they tried to charge me the full amount right away for a preorder in October.

They do an authorization when you place the order, but don't charge it until the order ships. So you have to have funds in place when you place the order so that the authorization goes through.

All of the Buy.com orders I've placed involving pre-orders were billed when the item shipped.

By the way, you don't happen to work for that big "blue instrument company" in Eden Prairie do you?

Actually, I just looked at my Webcertificate account now that I had enough money in there and verified the order and they charged my account the full amount. And the DVDs I ordered don't ship for almost a month. Oh well.....

And not sure what you mean by the Big Blue Instrument Company Jim Badger? I work for a newspaper that has it's headquarters in Eden Prairie though.

The "blue instrument co." in Eden Prairie that I was referring to is Rosemount Inc. I used to work for them out west and remembered there was a "Badger" that worked there in the Eden Prairie facility, but never met him.

What you should see is a pending charge, which is the authorization. If so, it will go away after some amount of time (not sure how many days -- sorry)

I'm not familiar with web certificats. It may be that web certificats are treated like debit cards and will be charged when you place the order.
Buy.com, as well as most other on-line retailers, charge your credit card when an item ships. If you are paying with a debit card, or a debit card alternative, they may charge the whole amount at the time you place the order.
When a retailer gets a credit approval from the credit card company they are covered. With a debit card, if the funds are not there when they try to charge they are out of luck. So retailers will charge your debit card when you place the order rather than run the risk that the money is not in your account when the item ships.
