Cold hearted for cheering on more people thrown out of work. I happen to like Borders and wish there where more brick-n-mortar choices for books and DVDs

Same here, but there's no reason for their high prices.

Re: FYE store closings 2011

A T.W.E.C. store not too far from me, which started way back as a "Wherehouse Music" (Anyone recall that name?!), and finally dropped out of sight for permanent as a "Coconuts". I remember picking up some heavy discs there over the calendars. From Mickey Rourke in "Last Ride", to a real sweet childrens classic favourite, Bogie's old yet still extremely attractive Lauren Bacall in "From The Mixed Up Files Of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler". Later on the joint kinda went silly Blu, all over the place, and I have little to zero tolerance for Blu-Ray anything! I know folks will disagree, but I've always said, "If it ain't broken, don't brake it"! Anywho, real sad to see this onetime bustling Video Shop reduced to an abandoned, hulking storefront that gives one the impression that it's visibly lonely and shaken up from the recent terrible events. I primarily do my Disc hunting in the City, when I can get down there, that is. There's still a decent amount of Mom & Pops, Brick & Mortars, Porn/Smut styes that sell regular DVDs in their forgotten back aisles and dust covered shelves, I've gotten some, sick, extremely valuable OOP DVDs at some of those smut pigstyes. but alot of Vid shops are losing their lives also. Look at "Virgin MegaStore". The one in Times Square, the heart of IT ALL! , mind you, 4 levels of Movie, Music, Electronics related galore, 4 levels! Gone! Shuttered! Done With, how can that/this be, especially in the City, overflowing with potential ducats. Since I've hunted in the City, I've seen F.Y.E., Tower Records (My personal Favourite), Virgin Megastores, as well as a host of many others get forced into raising the white flag of defeat. I'm not gonna point fingers at the problems, and there are plenty, one that starts with W, and ends with the T, and the other albatross is something really that sells LOTS of tre dollars items with BIG Paramount studio discs. The solo, stand on your own DVD/Movie Mom & Mortar, Brick & Pops shoppes is done with, just like the reign of Big Brock Lesnar!

There was also another Virgin on 14th Street...and there were the HMV stores. All Gone.
Hard to imagine that a city like New York doesn't have any decent music/movie stores anymore (sorry, but Colony does not count IMHO). NYC needs an Amoeba!

Re: FYE store closings 2011

There are plenty of "Mom & Pops", "Brick & Mortar" Video places around the entire City that I still do all my OOP DVD collecting. I've done so much better at these few places over the last couple of years, then I've ever done at the much bigger places, sans Tower Records, which I miss almost as much as if a best friend had moved away from me! For me Tower was the ultimate Video experience. From the days of 'In-Store Autograph Sessions' of "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" back in 84', to bumping into John Lithgow shopping for DVDs in the aisles at the Tower on 66th Street and Broadway! Tower has always held fond memories for me. I still frequent a decent amount of Video shops, I 'worked' hard to locate these for myself, so I refuse to share the information, if I did that, then were would I go to find DVD movies that are long out of print, very expensive on the secondary market, and still carry the original MSRP tags/stickers. Alot of my 'personal' Video spots are closing at a drastic pace lately, but instead of getting disgusted and frustrated, it just spurns me on further to uncover other hidden gems of DVD Video lore. It's rather exciting venturing out for unknown territories in the other boros, all you New York collectors know what I'm getting at! I for one, would much rather travel a great distance chasing an extremely difficult DVD find, than just pulling out the keyboard, and easily and lazily hitting the purchase tab for the very same DVD 'find'. Store closings are sad, but in today's mindset, I'm not really sure that it affects, the normal, run-of-the-mill DVD movie collectors. They will always have the computer to locate them that movie that they've been wanting to see so bad, I on the other hand, will survive the hard way, I'll always be on the chase, the lookout, where "The Rubber Meets The Road", when all is said and done, down the road, I'll eventually will become their "Hook-Up". What I hunt and find today, you will have to get off of me at a later date. I've learned to truly enjoy and embrace this hobby of ours. DVD collecting for me, is truly a wonderful hobby experience. I'm just hoping that this video format can eventually celebrate it's 15th Anniversary with positive news, rather than destructive, depressing 'Page 6 Rumour & Lies Fodder'.

So, essentially, Your long rambling trip to nowhere served only to gloat. Thank You for Your helpful input.

Re: FYE store closings 2011

Was FYE in Phoenix? I've never set foot in an FYE store.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't mind paying full MSRP if I were shopping at a kick ass store that stocks any title I can imagine. The convenience is really what gets me in there. That's why I shop on Amazon so much these days. Sometimes I'll stop by my local Zia Records. Especially for the used titles. Best Buy and those places have become irrelavent. Amazon kicks ass. Whatever I want, guaranteed to be in my hands in 1-2 days.

Re: FYE store closings 2011

The FYE in Katy, TX at Katy Mills Mall is also closing it's doors. I was there a few days ago and they were at 40 - 90% off everything. DVD's were at 40%, but I don't know what the 90% was for. It's an everything must go (even the fixtures and shelving). I agree with the others that they are normally pretty overpriced, but at 40% off, I found some really good deals. I'm not sure when their actual last day is, but I hope to catch it right at the end, when they are REALLY trying to get rid of their stuff...

The Pasadena store closed last month and the max discount was 60% off DVDs. There were some decent deals, but I did not buy that much. The titles that end in .97 should be at least 50% off now. I did get some decent stuff that was marked 2.97 and 1.97 for 1.50 and 1.00 resp. The best deals will come with the stuff that ends in .88. It was 2/10, then 2/5, then 2/3 the last week. I would go out there, but it's just too damn far.

I think there will only be one store open in the Houston area after Katy Mills closes.

Re: FYE store closings 2011

Guess noone knows which Chicago area FYEs are going to close? Then again, just about of the stores that once existed(and especially in the malls very close to where I live) have all closed, and the only ones I can think of that are left are the one in downtown Chicago(ex-Coconuts), Woodfield Mall, Fox Valley Mall, Chicago Ridge, and River Oaks. (probably missing a few, but hey, so few malls have FYEs as it is) Forgot to say I agree with a poster above that you do find some darn good deals in them, if you look hard enough. (i.e. finding a brand new DVD of one of the Harvey Birdman seasons that was very difficult to find in just about all stores I searched, including even Best Buy. plus, I read somewhere that BBY cut back their DVD selection since Christmas 2010, and was angry when I noticed it at several of their stores)

If anyone knows of a Chicago-area FYE that's closing, please post it. I'd be glad to make a trek out there, just to see what I find. Just don't want to waste time traveling to one, if it isn't closing.....

Gosh, I can't begin to say how much I miss the one on Michigan Ave. in Chicago(now the site of a Forever XXI). Was an amazing store back in the day, till it closed in summer 2007. And yes, I will say their prices tended to suck, but they did have good sales every so often, plus amazing selection(particularly imports).

I was really irked that I read online that the Times Square Virgin Megastore closed(among the final round of Virgin closures, before they went kaput), barely before I traveled to NYC in summer 2009.

The same silly tween store took over the old Times Square location as well.

LOL, so I see. Doesn't surprise me that they would, since they've been expanding into bigger-size store locations, anyway. Not that I care either way, since I doubt F21 even would carry much clothing for guys, if at all.....

The Burbank, CA store had a final week store closing sale about a month or two ago. I've always loved FYE and Second Spin. Sometimes I'll stumble on a rare used OOP title and purchase it for very little..

Has Second Spin closed as well? I recall they had a nice store on Sherman Oaks...I'd hate to hear that one closed too.

@ Mickactual, y'all want a freebie?! Hows bout' mounting up, and putting in some of your own work, potnah. I'm about gloating?! It sounds that way, maybe towards you, a comeback like that sounds awful lazy to me, and I can care less what your comp. pals think also. I'm a hustler, a worker, a hitter, a soldier, one that doesn't post up a thousand or much more times, in a dank basement, shows you that I just caught up on a post that I laid down sometime in early Feb, see, I don't live on the net, like a helluva lot of fellas do, I'm all about the hunt, locating silly disc merchandise, all on my own, try it sometime. Rockaway mall, i done cop'd out that place, "The Last Ride", the Mickey Rourke disc, that's bringin' over 2 yards right about now, I'm like flypaper, cause I'm all over the place. I'm just that "Bounty Hunter Hitter" that grabs up as many OOP hardcore titles, and then comes back home, to count up and smile upon my quarry, I just detest jealous Jokers like you, figures you're a Jersey kid! Without getting into details, i done gave away recently and at other past times, OOP discs that are in the half yard tag range to a new collector kid, on me, for no price, just cause it is the thing to do, and I wanted to get the kid started, and not with junk from Big Lots, but with strong OOP disc Jazz, so I ain't about gloating, but I'm damn sure gonna use the common sense that God gifted me with, I ain't about to give up, my hard earns!
