Meh, tomorrow may be the last day for all the stores.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...932090630.html

The future of Blockbuster Inc. hangs in the balance Thursday, when a federal bankruptcy judge is expected to rule on whether the flagging video chain stays in business or is liquidated.

Powerful voices on each side of the argument will go before the bench to make their cases and try to sway a judge who already has voiced skepticism of the proposed plan to keep the company alive. The hearing begins at 10 a.m. in bankruptcy court in Manhattan.

Among those objecting to Blockbuster's plans are several movie studios as well as the government's own bankruptcy-court representative. Summit Entertainment, the movie studio behind the "Twilight" saga, and an official creditors committee say liquidation would help stanch continuing losses and secure repayment for their goods. To that end, they are urging U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland to reject a proposed sale of the company for $290 million to senior bondholders.

Liquidation would mean shutting down the roughly 5,000-store chain, which employs more than 20,000.

It's sad to see something from my childhood go. I really don't like it when something like this happens, but in this instance, I can understand it. In the last fifteen years, with the internet being invented, or at least getting widespread, renting really doesn't make much sense. Dvds are so cheap now that you can see a movie that you might be interested in and buy it. If you don't like it, you can just sell it to get your money back. With renting, wether you like the movie or not, you have to give it back and you're out money. I will miss Blockbuster, though. I went there a lot as a kid.

Too bad you weren't around when home video was a new thing- the independent video stores that Blockbuster put out of business were much more memorable.

I still have 4 months of 1 free rental a month.. so it'd be nice for them to stick it out at least that long. (selfish-wink)

I know our store was going out of business.. last time my wife was there, (this week) they still had the dvd's at 8 bucks.

But I wonder if prices will get better today if they are shutting down today.

Edit: So I went down there.. 15% off pretty steep blu prices.. Some decent deals, but overall not worth it. I didn't get anything.

My ass is growing tired of how they keep on dragging out the end.

March 10 (Bloomberg) -- Bankrupt Blockbuster Inc., once the world’s largest movie-rental chain, resolved disputes with creditors over a sale proposal that would help the company avoid liquidation.

Unsecured creditors, movie studios and prospective buyers of Blockbuster reached an accord on a revised sale agreement that removes the ability of prospective buyers to force the company into a Chapter 7 liquidation, said Stephen Karotkin, a lawyer for Blockbuster.

“The parties have come to an accord and presented us with a more palatable situation” following days of negotiations, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland said in Manhattan court today.

So is the consensus even with stores on their final week of business, the sales on DVD/BD aren't worth checking out?

Found out today that there is a store closing near my girlfriend's work, which I heard would be shutting down March 13th.

If you can find a list you'll be the first.
Go through this thread and you will see some of the closing stores posted including the one where I work.

Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

Just googled this subject, and Blockbuster isn't going to be liquidated for now. Looks like it won't be going out of business, and a sale was approved. But oddly because of the forum rule that I have to have 30 posts to post website URL links, I can't post the URL to that news article. Google 'bankruptcy judge approves sale of blockbuster', and you'll see the article from the NY Times site I wanted to post here.

Anyway, Sunday is the last day for the Irving Park and Kimball store, so I'll be dropping by either tomorrow and/or Sunday to see what I find there. Also found 2 more stores closing, which are at Lawrence and Oakley(east of Western + Lincoln), and Ashland and Wolfram(barely north of Diversey).

Excluding the Irving Park and Kimball store(which closes after Sunday night), all the ones I mentioned(Lawrence/Oakley, Ashland/Wolfram, Foster/Pulaski, and Clark/Halsted/Barry) will be open for at least a few more weeks. Tried going to the Ashland/Wolfram store to look earlier tonight, but it had closed, but I saw a sign on the door saying its last day was April 10th, thus why I believe there will be at least 4 more weeks of liquidation sales at these 4 locations.

Went by the Clark and Halsted location earlier today, and with very few exceptions, was more disappointed with its closing sale than not. Used DVDs were $8, used Blu-Rays were only being discounted 15%(boo!), and DVDs with no hard black case were $4(boo, those shouldn't be more than $1-2 at the very most). The other day, I scored very well at the Irving Park/Kimball store, and will be doing a final run to it either tomorrow or Sunday to see if they get cheaper than what I was seeing there($4 for used DVDs, and amazingly, $1 for DVDs without a traditional case!). Gah, I only wish I knew when Berwyn/Broadway(closest BBV to me) will begin its closing sale.....

Well that's it.

A couple days of clearing out the stock and I'm out of the BBV business.
There wasn't any super discount last day sale although we did figure out a code that made the price of used dvd aout $1 each.
I enjoyed my 9 years at the bbv where I worked.

Will miss the interaction with the good customers who came in
to talk about movies and sometimes general chit chat.

Won't miss the dummies like the one who would bring the
backer cards up and think they were buying 20 dvds for $1 the last few weeks.

On ihateblockbuster.com I read another story about someone buying the backer cards then coming back saying the cashier "forgot to put the movies in them". They should've just given those things away for free- I laughed when I saw a closing store trying to sell them.

At the store in Davis, CA yesterday I got a sort of biography of Barack Obama called "Who is This Guy" and another one of John McCain for 89 cents each. They had a few copies of those. Most of the other prices were still a joke.

Saw people doing the same thing with the backer cards when I went in a few weeks ago. People really are idiots.

Shame that BB couldn't just be put out of it's misery. A sale won't do squat.
