And here's what I posted in the other thread:

Friday, Feb 25th: Clearance begins. All PV DVDs $9.99. 10% off brand new.
Monday, March 7th: PV DVDs lowered to $7.99. 10% off brand new.
Mon, March 14th (today): PV DVDs lowered to $5.99. 20% off brand new. (Also, PV BDs are 15% off.)

I guess I'll go back in a couple of weeks. It looks like each Monday the prices will keep getting cheaper.

Btw, BEWARE PV RENTAL COPIES! I'm sure elsewhere in this forum you've discussed featureless rental copies.

FYI, ironically, there is one film for which BB's rental copy is the reverse: Stuart Gordon's Stuck. You may recall, this was released with a BD-exclusive commentary not found on the SD DVD. For whatever reason, the Blockbuster-exclusive SD includes Stuart Gordon's audio commentary!

If anyone knows of any other closing locations in the metro Phoenix area I'd be much obliged.

Anyone got the skinny on stores in NY, namely Manhattan and Queens?
Any and all info greatly appreciated.

The Blockbuster in the Springhurst area of Louisville is closing (9442 Brownboro Rd, near the exit from I-71 to the Gene Snyder). All of the inventory I saw was rental/PV only.

DVDs are currently $10 bucks and Blu-Rays are 15% off the sticker price. Not a lot of great deals, but I did pick up the 2-disc BD of the Zodiac Director's Cut for $8 bucks.

The new deal my local closing Blockbuster has is, sign up for one paid month of their subscription service, at a reduced-rate price of $5.99/month (for the first two months, and then $11.99 after that, but you can cancel any time), and you get THREE Blu-rays or DVDs at $12.99 or under for free (or basically $2 each). Crazy deal. I got the Blu-rays of "The White Ribbon," "Chloe," and "Please Give." VERY pleased. The guy told me that they'd have no problem doing it again, as long as it goes through, so I might go in again tomorrow.

How can they offer a subscription service if the store is closing and they're getting rid of the discs? Not that it's a bad deal for you cause you're getting the Blu-rays, but will they be around for a few months with enough to rent?

Looks like it's 575 now...

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/blo...r-stores-23700

Dish Network, new owner of bankrupt Blockbuster Inc., is keeping about 575 stores in operation while pulling the plug on another 1,100 stores, according to filings with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York.

Englewood, Colo.-based Dish, which acquired Blockbuster for $320 million in an auction sale April 6, didn’t disclose why the remaining stores would remain open.

In an April 16 court filing, Blockbuster submitted the addresses of about 572 stores it had attached cure amounts on outstanding lease payments due landlords and property owners. Several of the locations contacted by Home Media Magazine confirmed they were staying open.

In separate filings, Blockbuster disclosed the locations of hundreds of stores nationwide whose unexpired leases the Dallas-based rental icon rejected, effective April 17.

The decision to shutter more than 50% of its remaining stores comes just days after Blockbuster sought a three-month extension on the April 14 deadline for remedying outstanding lease agreements.

A Dish/Blockbuster representative was not immediately available for comment..

Now I'm torn. I have had no problems with BB online and have always gotten good service from my local store when I use them. DISH on the other hand has been a disaster. I signed up through the phone company on a free 250 channel promotion and have yet to receive my free service. First I didn't have the right internet. Then even though I had phone I didn't have digital phone so I would have to upgrade. So to get the free DISH I ended up upgrading services I didn't need to upgrade and it isn't saving me anything over the cable I used to have. Also my service has gone out twice in two months due to weather and the bad part of winter is over! Hate the DISH

I chatted with the employees of my local BB the last few days of the closeout sale. One of them said that the DVDs unsold by April 10th would probably be shipped to functioning BB stores or maybe used for Blockbuster Online's rental stock.

I think that, like Borders, Blockbuster.com will continue to function in the face of store closings. I recently saw a TV commercial, so they must have launched a new ad campaign for Blockbuster-By-Mail. If they have the money for television commercials, I think they'll be around for a while.

Ironically, 2 Blockbuster Kiosks were recently set up in my town not long before the store closed. It's like they're competing with Redbox & Netflix at the expense of their own stores.

Here's where I was pointed to for a list of rejected leases:

kccllc.net/Docket/SearchResults.asp?T=2511

Then scroll down to April 15, docs. #1610 - #1617 list all the store lease rejected as of April 17.

Mine went away last week. I stopped in the day before closing and they still had a ton of BD's.. however they were only marked at 25% off.. I laughed and walked out.

Interesting.

I did notice that just about everything in and around Pa on the list is already closed, including at least one that closed last year.

Blockbuster Bows 99-Cent Rentals
27 May, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

New store promotion includes “unlimited” free rentals accompanying new release titles

Blockbuster LLC, which is owned by Dish Network Corp., May 27 said it is cutting the single-day rental price on most movie titles to 99 cents – the same fee charged by kiosks.

Beginning today at 1,700 Blockbuster locations, consumers can rent select new releases for $2.99 ($1.99 for other new releases) on street date for the first night and 99 cents per day thereafter.

Blockbuster typically charged $3.99 to $4.99 for new releases (on street date) for five-day rental periods. The new pricing is designed to encourage single-day rentals, which of course improves in-store title availability.

The move is noteworthy since consumers have access to new release titles four weeks before kiosks and Netflix while paying the identical 99-cent-per-night fee after the initial $2.99 (or $1.99) first-night fee. It also suggests Dish is intent on maintaining operations of Blockbuster stores.

Through July 4, Blockbuster is running a promotion whereby consumers renting $2.99 new releases can also rent any $1.99 title or less for free. When finished watching the free movie rental, customers can return to the Blockbuster store an unlimited number of times to get another one-day rental of any title priced at $1.99 or less – also for free (one free rental out at a time).

“Our customers are seeking a better value – we’ve answered with new pricing and the flexibility of single day rentals,” said Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster. “Our new pricing gives our customers the best of both worlds: access to the latest releases – many 28 days before Netflix and Redbox – and the most movies at low prices.”

Eric Wold, research director with Merriman Capital in San Francisco, said the unlimited free rentals on secondary titles could have a "minimal" impact on Redbox (and other kiosks). Wold added that the month of June is traditionally a slow month for major new release titles (as studios focus on theatrical).

"Given that Redbox only focuses on new releases and not older, library titles, we do not view Blockbuster's library title pricing strategy as having any impact on Redbox visitation trends in the long run," Wold wrote in a note.

That sounds great, except until you get to the 2.99 (or 1.99) for the first night part...

Overheard a BB employee explaining this to customers. Funny to say "If you return it within 1 day, its like a savings from our previous fees. The second day is like breaking even. The third...well, don't keep it that long". Hahaha. Yeah, good luck with that. /fail

St. Paul Highland Pk. store closing. No evidence of a closing sale, tho. Looks like they're just clearing it out. This was my main BB for over 20 years. 3rd in my immediate area to close this year. Never rented much, but always a good source of cheap used movies/tv shows. That's why I will miss it. Two surviving Twin Cities stores I know of are too far away to bother with.

There used to be nearly 30 stores here in town. Now there are only 3 within a 75 mile radius.

I was in Wasilla, AK a couple weeks back and they had 2 Blockbusters on the main road through town, I hadn't seen one in a few years. Made me long for the days of mom and pop video stores and how they killed them.

Wasilla Main Street? Did you go there from Wall Street? :)

If sauce07 doesn't reply with a "You betcha!," I'll be terribly disappointed.

I think my local store is a goner. I drove past on Friday and they were taking down the awning outside around their whole part.

I'm thinking with Blockbuster being the topic, this is more appropriate

"greed, for lack of a better word, is good"

Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

What happens to all those preview discs they play on loop on the store TV's? I can't imagine any employees want them as a keepsake. As a former Hollywood Video employee, from around the early 2000's, it drove me nuts hearing the same previews every 20 minutes. For a while I had the Hannibal ad imprinted into my brain. "I couldn't help but notice on the FBI's rather dull public website..."

And to think, once upon a time the new release mobs were adamant about getting their hands on Double Jeopardy or Domestic Disturbance. Working video retail can make you very cynical observing human behavior patterns. I'll bet most of these people don't even remember watching the movies they fought so hard to get a decade ago. There's something Pavlovian about New Releases.
