What chance that they all close this year? I never see anyone in them anymore.

I love the in store exchange program for the online subscription. The store I go to was reduced in size but still has an OK selection. There are always a few people milling about when I'm there.

I'd be shocked if they didn't go Chapter 7 by year's end.

But they make no money off of that. And a few people milling about is why they will close.

All the stores have "make the day" goals, and that's basically goals on how many dollars they can pull in per day. So far there's only two that I know of in my area that are making their goals and are safe (for now...just watch their goals increase when the other stores close and they stop making it.) But most stores are not making their goals, and the goals are not very reasonable.

Well they do make money, they probably just don't credit any of it to the store. The in-store exchange is an extra $3 month which adds 5 more rentals to your monthly total. I'm sure they are hoping I'll buy some candy or a PPV while I'm there. They sublet half the space and I've always seen a couple people checking out while I'm there which is why that one hasn't closed yet

Oh, I know they make money in some way, it just doesn't go towards their "Make the Day" goals for total sales.

And yet is certainly the operative word there. Massive store closings are coming. The low numbers being rumored online are just phase 1...they will be considering closing more stores through the entire year.

My place is closing in a couple weeks.
Been open for nearly 20 years and another one near us closed a month ago, we've been veryy busy keeping up with all the folks coming in from the other store.

Thanks, I understand that there is a ton of hate for bbv, but It was a nice little part time job for the last 8 years and the free rentals every wek allowed me to see everything that came out without having to buy things all the time.

Also anyone who came in while i was on knew they were getting good service and someone who knew something about movies, can't say that about the rest of the crew.

After hearing the disappointing Redbox earnings, which were blamed on the new release delays, I figured Blockbuster, who had been aggressively advertising this key difference between them and Netflix/Redbox, would have picked up a little.

I'm surprised it doesn't bother people to be delayed from Netflix. First there was the whole throttling episode then the 28 day delay. My buddy uses Netflix and is always 6 weeks behind me on new releases.

Sorry to hear about your store Whotony. I've never had the problems with BB that many have and always had decent service

I feel bad for the small group of people who come in that are older folks who really enjoyed coming in just to walk around and browse and offer a good conversation about movies and sometimes other things.

My store's final sales started today.
As usual all the dummies packed the store, some spending hundreds of dollars on barely
discounted items.

Not to mention they could probably find the same stuff brand new on amazon.com and save even more.

The signs are up in the windows at Minnehaha & Lake in Minneapolis--the first in my area to go in the most recent round of closings.

Stopped by my local BB in The Colony, TX and found out they will be closing in three weeks. Employees, just found out. It's a shame they are all nice people. I'll probably be cancelling my online membership now .

Is there a list online of stores slated to close, or do you just have to go by them to find out?

whotony 02-12-11 07:53 PM

Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

You have to go find them.

I suspect there will be more soon. A deal to exit chapter 11 bankruptcy fell through and now the company is going to be sold. And likely liquidated soon.

I honestly don't know...and the same with the kiosks.

Blockbuster kiosks are owned and operated by NCR. I remember getting an e-mail from them when Blockbuster announced a round of store closings saying that the kiosks would not be affected. Of course, if Blockbuster goes under, they may change the name.
