No jump in price for me, they went down.
10/10 - 38 titles $1315.80
10/20 - 38 titles $1305.45
10/31 - 38 titles $1279.62

tonyjg 11-01-07 07:05 PM

here's a few subtle price rises on my wishlist some many 'consider' to watch -

Performance - from 12.20 to 13.81
Halloween II and III - from 9.50 to 10.37
Cult Camp Classics Volume 2 Women in Peril - from 19.49 to 24.36
Year of the Dragon - 8.28 to 9.38
Hamlet - from 20.26 to 21.25
Who's That Girl - from 6.62 to 7.50
Young Einstein - from 8.28 to 9.38

What's somewhat disappointing is the slight increase in prices on cheaper title (of course noting that nearly everything went up by 10+% in September !!!)

few price decreases -

Inland Empire - 19.98 to 18.79
Down in the Valley - from 19.57 to 13.54
Robocop (anniversary) - from 16.01 to 13.77
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - from 13.67 to 11.79
Stanley Kubrick Collection - from 58.51 to 54.99

20% off sale doesnt look to enticing at the moment (even though the A$ is around U$0.93 !!!)

Looks like quite a few of the Warner $19.99 titles went up in price - Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Straight Time and There was a Crooked Man from my wish list. Very lame.

EDIT: Looks like ALL of the Warner $19.99 titles have gone up in price. This puts quite a damper on this sale for me, since those were the primary (other than Criterion titles from DVD Planet) dvds that I was interested in. Guess I'll have to hold out until the next sale, perhaps they won't raise the prices again next time, or the list price will have gone down.

When was this priced at $58.51? I've been watching this for several weeks, and it's always been $54.99

Prices have definitely started fluctuating. While it has decreased for most of the titles i'm pursuing, it has risen suspectingly in case of 1-2 titles.

Thanks for the tip DVD Polizei

By the way, discounted price of this lot will come up to be around 497$ . Planning to break down that into 2 individual orders neither of which will exceed 249$ so i end up paying 17$ for shipping on each instead of paying $40 flat shipping fees on orders above $249 . Any better suggestion int'l boardies ?

I have to break mine into small orders, as anything over $36 the UK, I have to pay usually more than what the order is worth.

I do the opposite in the UK, and place one enormous order as the saving in shipping more than compensates if it's hit by customs. And often, it isn't :)

The main agony of customs charges are the £8 admin fee, the actual VAT is trifling most of the time. So lots of little packages which might get hit if they're too close to the line or the exchange rate changes before they arrive can add up if you're not careful. That and I'm lazy.

I have no knowledge about India, but I'd say if customs limits are a problem, one big order is the way to go; if not, splitting across two as you suggest seems sensible. Just be careful it will actually by 2x$17 when they calculate it with price shifts etc!

Rui, Are you also from the UK then? If so, have you placed a big order and not been charged customs before?

Excellent. Glad that i ran into you. Difference is around 10 bucks now
(26.47 * 0.8) - (13.81 * 0.8) = $10.128
For 10 bucks extra 3 great movies, i'm game for it. Thanks again !

There will be alarm bells ringing in the Customs office when they see a shipment worth $500. I would hate to be in a position where you cannot let go off the parcel and on the other hand have to grease some palms.

As for the 2 shipments strategy, i would most likely place the first order as soon as the sale kicks offs and include those titles which have the potential risk of being sold out. Second order would be placed during the closing days of the deal. It would give me enough time to see the buying pattern and maybe replace some of the titles in my wish-list with some other which i would have overlooked or may be a great steal !

Now only if i knew which titles from my wish list are going to be sell-out in the first couple of days. I hope DD has sufficient stock of every title.

Only problem is though DD looks at the amount before the 20% is knocked off.

So therefore you will pay $40 shipping in both.

However you can email them and ask them to fix it although they don't have a good reputation for customer service don't know if i would be too confident of it happening.

I made an order in June to Australia. I ordered 5 massive dvd box sets of the same dvd that came in 1 massive box and 1 smaller box. Didn't get charged any customs.

Don't know if i'm lucky. I read that you only get charged customs if your order is over $1000 here in Australia.....

I'm planning to place the order on phone to avoid the situation where i get charged 40 bucks. I've never placed a 200+ order here and not really aware of customs limit.

Are you sure that upto $1000 shipment is ignored by customs in Oz? Do you have any related info. on any Australian Customs web-site? I might as well get it shipped to my brother in Sydney who is coming to India anyway in first week of January. ;)

Well, just checked my wishlist I made back in August...

Of about 85 DVDs I was watching, the VAST majority (about 89%) have jumped from almost $2 to over $4!

About 2 or 3 have stayed exactly the same price...2 dropped about $4-5 (I think these were retail price drops everywhere though)...and around 4 dropped in price about $2.

What I've noticed is that DD is generally the better choice when I am purchasing only 1 or 2 items because they offer free shipping on ANY amount, no matter how low, and no sales tax. But when I'm making numerous purchases equaling greater amounts of $$$ (like I used to during DDD's big sales), the bargain just isn't there anymore. A few other sites have just as low, or sometimes lower prices (especially if there is a sale code), but you have to spend more/buy more to get the free shipping.

kenbuzz 11-06-07 02:17 PM

I'm keeping an eye on the following items in my wishlist:

NEED TO HAVE:
$21.53 2001: A Spacy Odyssey [HD DVD]
$27.85 300 [HD DVD]
$21.95 Army of Darkness [HD DVD]
$21.95 Being John Malkovich [HD DVD]
$21.95 The Bourne Supremacy [HD DVD]
$21.35 The Dirty Dozen [HD DVD]
$68.89 Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series
$21.95 Elizabeth [HD DVD]
$27.85 The Fountain [HD DVD]
$19.87 The Three Stooges Collection - 1934-1936
$22.87 WKRP in Cincinnati - Season 1

WANT TO HAVE:
$27.79 The Jazz Singer (80th Anniv)
$16.20 The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show - Complete Season 3
$22.08 Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow [HD DVD]
$21.95 The Thing [HD DVD]
$21.95 What Dreams May Come [HD DVD]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$407.98

Correct. I regularly order massive amounts in the 20% sales because it's so much more efficient then lots of little packages for me (which often seem to get hit). The £8 handling charges annoy me far more than the taxes. But when they do notice, I don't have a problem paying, it's fair game and on average I do very well out of the system. I don't think I've ever actually paid customs on one of the huge boxes, but I know my dad has had to once. It's always little $50 boxes they seem to pounce on, for me - where they're safely over the limit but not so valuable that it's crippling!

Worth noting also that if you are buying books in the sale (last time we splurged heavily when they were discounted twice in error, I must confess) they're exempt from customs so you won't get hit on those. Buying books from DD with the shipping cap and lack of duty was crazily good value...they came in huge postal sacks.

Sometimes if things go out of stock though, DD will split ship big orders so be careful (it can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how they split it!).

Just received a $200+ Geneon panic order with no charge at all the other week. I'm probably due to be hit on something again soon :s

just for some balance...i have a wishlist of about 3k and haven't noticed any changes in prices - certainly no rampant increases. I honestly think many of you are imagining things.

... the prices changes are real

With all due respect just about everyone here has been able to back up their claims with hard data - not imaginary wild claims.

I personally have been keeping an excel file on the changes. While there is no ONGOING systemic increase there was a rather significant jump across the board a few weeks ago with very odd spikes and drops on a number of titles (excluding those on sale).

I don't mind having my sanity called into question on other matters (ha ha), but not on this... the prices changes are real.

In their defense, I do like the site ,and yes , I do plan on buying from them in the future. I have recommended them to countless others in the past and will probably continue to do so.

I just wonder if the prices will roll back after the big Novemeber sale. I have held off posting any recent changes until AFTER the sale begins and I will post another one AFTER it ends.

Unfortunately, when the prices were that low many of us were content to look the other way when it came to DD'd lackluster customer service. I think they will find that is not the case anymore...

I'm in agreement with the previous post - approximately 90% of my 180+ items INCREASED in price around the 19/22 Sept - increasing 10% or more.

10% might not be rampant - but its very noticable in my opinion !

Yeah, a good number of those on my wishlist went up too. There were many that were $10 and change just last week & this week they went up to $12 & change. So, with the 20% off it would take the price back down to what it was before. I probably am going to skip the sale this time since really, for me, there is no sale ultimately what with the price increases.

SkullOrchard 11-06-07 08:00 PM

About half of my wish list increased in price late September, and the other half increased on Halloween day. Out of thirty or so DVDs, I only have a couple that haven't gone up in price. Most went up two or three dollars. This "20% Off" sale = Meh.

Nope, I have a copy of my wishlist from August that I copy/pasted into an e-mail and stored in my account. I did a side by side comparison so my numbers are based on cold, hard facts. No imagining here. I stand by my previous assessment: Approximately 89% of my wishlist had a price increase.

Okay well i've ordered stuff from deep discount about 3 or 4 times and they are always very good.

First time i ordered about $40 US worth of stuff.

Second time i ordered about $300 US worth of stuff i ordered a few multiples of dvds in that order 5 of one and 2 of another and the rest were singles.

Third time i ordered about $400 US worth of stuff it was 5 really huge dvd box sets of the same dvds.

Each of those times it came really quick about 5 business days and didn't get slugged any customs.

Check out this site:

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5549

I'd say especially if you don't double up on any dvds in your order you could be assured that you wouldn't pay any customs for goods valued over 1000 AU.
