As someone who's been a loyal customer of DD for years now, I've been noticing what seem to me quite higher prices on a number of disc's. Not just the significant increases which went into effect at the begining of their last 20% off sale and have now drifted back down. I'm starting to order more and more items priced less at Amazon. With their free shipping option for orders over $25.00 I'm saving more that if I purchased at DD. I'll still order from DD but just go where you get the best deal.

I've got a short wishlist in DD, and each item has gone up from $1.50 to $4.00. I've been a loyal DD supporter and customer for years, but they're no longer the slam dunk they used to be. My last few DVD purchases have been from several other sites, because they offered a better deal. Even with the hoped for 20% off sale, it'll be touch and go as to whether DD will beat their competitors' pricing. Well, it's been a good run.

Are the items in your list cheaper elsewhere?

Three of four are currently cheaper elsewhere. When the 20% sale occurrs, with no further price changes, DD will have the lowest price for one more item and it will be a wash on the other two. I'll see how things stack up at sale time; after all, what goes up may come down.:)

Their prices on HD DVD and Blu-Ray are pretty bad as well. Sad thing is, for the first few weeks their new Naperville store was open, they had HD media prices competitive with Fry's and Amazon, and they were having a 20% opening sale, so I got a lot of great deals. Now almost all HDM is lucky to have a 20% discount off of list at the most. As a result I have bought next to nothing there in the past few months. Bummer since it's close to my place and very convenient.

SHORTY 10-06-07 12:25 PM

I've noticed the increase in prices on my wishlist since the change over from DDD to DD. Many of them now can be found cheaper elsewhere.

Goldblum 10-06-07 01:35 PM

Doesn't seem like much of a deep discount.

Maybe we should start calling them Diminishing Discount?

I was afraid this would happen, as soon as their websites merged and started their affiliate program.
The "The Twilight Zone - The Complete Definitive Collection" I had been eying went from about $185 to $220. A $30-40 price jump is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
I used to eagerly await their 20% discount sales, but now, I can usually find better deals in the weekly sales ads.
What happened to you, DeepDiscount?
edit. Doesn't someone from DeepDiscount post here? Can we get a response from that individual?

SeymourGams 10-11-07 12:23 AM

I miss the days when I would price check everything I bought at Deepdiscount and it would always be the cheapest price. I use to have a package arrive from them almost weekly but now in a couple months all I got were two dvds they had coupons for. I've actually been ordering from Amazon because it's been cheaper. :(

I've actually started telling everyone whom I recomended the site to in the past, to be wary from now on. Last year I spent 400+ plus on their 20% off sale (it's a lot when you consider how little money I make) but this year, I am guessing it's going to be more like 40 bucks.

I noticed the price jump as well, because after I purchased the set for around $160 at DD, a thread was made a week later asking whether or not it was going or had gone OOP, quoting a price of $185 from DD. Amazon was out of stock at the time, so it's possible they increased their price thinking it was indeed OOP.

Amazon has the set back in-stock for 164.99, while DD has it listed at $221.09.

Great find! I'll probably get it from Amazon soon. I thought about getting the individual chapters by themselves at DD for the 20% off sale, but this is still much cheaper. fye.com and buy.com have this at $200+ still.
BTW, anyone know what this is supposed to be: http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewprod...ductId=5743840

I sadly have to agree with just about everything you said. I dont know why DDD doesn't seem to have any good sales anymore and why they are significantly more expensive compared to Amazon.
Last year I spent over $1000 in the Nov. sale and this year it looks like I wont be getting nearly as much stuff. Maybe the Angel Complete Series but not a lot else. I want to like DDD but they are making it harder and harder to do so.

DD?

Hank1215 10-12-07 12:12 PM

You are correct, sir!

Ketchup 10-12-07 01:41 PM

That's why I gotta stick with bargainflix.com and price search everything now since DD isn't a sure bet anymore.

BKenn01 10-12-07 04:21 PM

I think it depends on what you are buying. DD in my opinion still has very good sales. I would note the A&E Buy one Get one as a recent example. And I will say that they dont typically raise the prices for their buy 1 get 1 sales.

Amazon is going to be cheaper on certain items. DD is going to be cheaper. Just depends on what you need. Often I find better prices on New Release TV Series at Barnes and Noble because of the 10% member. Shopping around is the best way to go.

Silverscreenvid 10-15-07 09:58 AM

DD is still significantly better than a lot of online retailers like Amazon on most items. However, they do seem to have raised a lot of prices about 10%.

Catalogue titles that have an MSRP of $14.99 used to sell below $10 at DD. Now, they are in the $10.50-11 range. That's still less than Amazon's $12.99 on most of them.

BUT....

Those titles sell for $9.99 or less everyday at BB, CC, Target and even the local grocery store. Plus, BB and CC usually put a bunch of them on sale each week at prices from $5-9.

They still have a handful of sale items at good prices for a couple of weeks, like this week's Synapse titles, but there's fewer sales on a smaller number of items.

Only time will tell if this is permanent. It may depend on their margins, their volume and what the competition does. If volume doesn't drop significantly at these higher prices (and you have to remember that people who follow this board are a lot more price conscious than the average customer who just orders out of habit), then expect them to stay.

I am playing a wait and see game. I am hopefull that after their annual BIG 20% OFF sale the prices will 'rollback'. I think they just jumped the gun with the 10% increase. Think about it you raise the price 10% , then you have a 20% off sale, the consumer is really only getting a 10% savings.

They have done this before but within a day or two of the start of the sale, not a month. Based on the conversations I have had with various reps from their company they seem to have bigger issues to deal with....

forumsmy 10-15-07 09:45 PM

As with anytime I buy, I compare the prices and will select the one that makes most sense, depending upon cost, how quickly I want it and in what shape I want it and what am I willing to pay for all those things. Cheap can also be what you get, especially with returns, which are a hassle no matter what (it is extra time you have to take). So what is it worth to me and what chance do I want to take.

For small difference I would pay more at Barnes and Noble or Amazon and get the product within several days and good condition with the added benefit of returning to a BN store (for the BN product not Amazon product).

My 2 pennies.

tonyjg 10-18-07 11:04 PM

definitely no price changes on my extensive list of items - about 180 titles (apart from the 10+% increase several weeks ago).

with the 'expected' sale due any week now...... i'll be cutting down considerably (even though the Aussie $ is doing much better against the US$).

sticking to titles $10 or less here. 'Cruising' can wait til the price drops further :)

SkullOrchard 10-31-07 10:09 PM

Check your carts. Within the past few hours, nearly every item in my cart has jumped significantly in price. I guess their "20% Off Sale" must be right around the corner.

atari2600 10-31-07 10:48 PM

wow - thats lame if DDD does that. why even bother having the sale if your gonna jack up the prices beforehand?

aspects 10-31-07 11:17 PM

Well I did notice He-Man Season 2 Volume 1 and 2 went down to $20.77, which I believe dropped some. Besides those I do not see a price difference in the other ten in my list.

I noticed earlier today that The Departed Special Edition was out of stock and now it is back in stock, so I hope it stays that way for the sale.
