Netflix down......(?)

I haven't been able to get to their site in almost 24 hours. And every time I go there, it gives me a different EST on when it'll be back up. WTF!?

M2theAX 07-24-07 12:33 PM

I got the same message, and my last two movies that came took almost a week to get to me!

Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey on why the Netflix website has been offline for more than 12 hours: "It's an unanticipated outage that we've been working on through the night."

http://www.cnbc.com/id/19932233

Company spokesman Steve Swasey said engineers are working to get the site back up and running by 12 pm New York time, but that there's no confirmation that the repair will be in place at that time.

The company subsequently moved its estimate for returning to availability to 2 pm New York time.

Swasey would not characterize the outage beyond calling it "unanticipated," and would not provide any details as to its cause.

CNBC Silicon Valley Bureau Chief Jim Goldman, who broke the story, says an outage of this magnitude could not have come at a worse time for the company.

"Netflix shares got hammered on its earnings news from yesterday; and got hit even harder after announcing plans to cut some of its key subscription rates. That was good news for consumers, but bad news for shareholders who might see a dramatic reduction in revenue," Goldman said.

"But an outage for a company that does all its business online is adding insult to injury, especially with rival Blockbuster running ads about how it offers both an online and brick-and-mortar retail strategy for consumers," he said.

"We hope to have it back shortly," said Netflix's Swasey.

this morning the site said it would be back up at 9am, now it says 1pm pst.

The only other time I have ever seen this has been late at night for scheduled maintenance (I think usually on a Thursday or Friday night).

DOS attack from BB? :D

FILMCZY 07-24-07 01:17 PM

That's it...a month of free rentals for everyone...

dan30oly 07-24-07 01:21 PM

I'm just glad that all my movies were sent out by them yesterday as I'm sure this would effect them sending out anything today. At the very least, this is a good excuse for them not to mail anything out today, effectively throttling everyones account nationwide for one day saving them a load of money.

Chucky 07-24-07 02:22 PM

I really hope this outage doesn't affect shipping.

dan30oly 07-24-07 02:59 PM

and now it's 4pm pst...

Yeah, A LOT more than 12 hours. As I said earlier, I haven't been able to access the site since noon yesterday (EST). And who knows how long it had been down prior to that. In the 10 plus years I've been online, I've never seen a site down this long.

dan30oly 07-24-07 03:53 PM

And, if they don't ship anything out today they save a ton of money by throttling accounts by at least a day with little to no repurcussions. Who's going to cancel their account just because their discs weren't shipped for one day? There's really little to no risk to them and nothing but reward for doing this for one day. In fact, I think that if this were indeed an "unanticipated" outage, that the lesson they will learn from this is that it was a blessing in disguise for them and we'll see more of this in the future, but they won't exactly be "unanticipated" outages.

Chad 07-24-07 03:58 PM

Whoa, just tried hackingnetflix.com for some possible updates and even it seems to be down now!

Daytripper 07-24-07 04:24 PM

The site being down this long is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. I think all the members with unlimited rentals should order 4 DVDs at a time (just any random movie you really don't care to see), then return all 4 the next day. And repeat for about a month. Sure, Netflix probably won't lose any money. But it would be fun :) OK, maybe fun for just me ;)

Has anybody tried calling? I was on hold for only a short while before hanging up, but the recorded voice said they could not access any of our account information, so I don't think there's any incentive to call right now.

I plan on voicing my opinion once they are back online, though...

Bah. They'll be around for awhile. With other sites having DNS problems, I wouldn't be surprised if some major service provider is having issues.

dan30oly 07-24-07 05:02 PM

I'm sorry, but I thought I heard that netflix was actually making money while blockbuster was losing cash in the millions.

FILMCZY 07-24-07 05:11 PM

Whoa, Blockbuster just shipped my next three dvds...!!!

JMG 07-24-07 05:23 PM

The last time I was with netflix they had a minor glitch that put a major smile on my face.

A small portion of members had the good fortune of being sent all there movies on there want list at one time! Luck me had over 200 titles that got sent all at once. In two days my mail box was stuffed with dvds that would make anyone wet there toughskins with glee.

ps...on the sad side I had to retire my burner to the big scrap pile in the sky. ;)

Chad 07-24-07 05:27 PM

It's back!

Daytripper 07-24-07 05:27 PM

The site is back up.

dan30oly 07-24-07 05:45 PM

Back up and surprisingly I'm having a disc shipped today.

rkndkn 07-24-07 06:17 PM

And they did drop the price on the 3-at-a-time to $16.99. (Don't remember what the other plan prices were.)
