Best Buy To Close About 110 Musicland Stores

http://www.local6.com/sh/money/stori...101092003&ts=H

Company Attempts To Improve Financial Position
Posted: 9:55 a.m. EST January 9, 2003

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy is raising its fourth-quarter earnings outlook, noting better-than-expected December sales.

At the same time, it is announcing some moves aimed at improving its financial position, including the closing of 110 Musicland unit stores.

They include 90 Sam Goody stores and about 20 Suncoast stores.

Best Buy cites a continued decline in prerecorded music sales and a slowdown in mall traffic.

Best Buy Vice Chairman and CEO Brad Anderson says new store openings for the Musicland unit are on hold.

Anderson says the company expects to begin moving the Musicland business into its domestic Best Buy operations. As a result, the position of Musicland president has been eliminated, and Kevin Freeland has left the company.

Best Buy bought Musicland, which also includes Mediaplay, two years ago.

Figured this was going to happen once they bought Musicland. Too bad... I'm not a huge Suncoast/Sam Goody fan, but I have definitely made out pretty well with their Replay card over the years. I think I've gotten a couple hundred $$ in GCs in the past 2-3 years.

Funny how many people don't want to pay full retail for their music and movies.

I never have understood how these stores stay in business at all.

Two reasons.

1) Impulse buys. Someone is walking in a mall and they walk by a Sam Goody and realize they wanted this certain cd for a while. They go in, look at the price, realize it's $2 cheaper everywhere else, but are unwilling to spend that $2 in gas getting it.

2) Kids. They flock to malls in droves. Parents don't drop their kids off at the local BB or Circuit City. They drop them off at malls. The kids then proceed to spend their money on overpriced cds.

That's my guess.

my gut feeling is that they will close those stores that compete with other stores in the same chain. so if you mall has a best buy right near it and sales are slow at that store expect to lose it.

I doubt they will just close stores that make money.

I wonder if they might expand the number of Media Play stores.

Too bad they never discount their stock when closing a store. All you get is a crappy 30% discount (maybe) which puts them on par with Best Buy or CC or your local used CD store. Then they just take their remaining stock (pretty much everything) and ship it to one of their stores or warehouses. Bah.

A few years ago, all of the Musicland stores near me closed up -- or I think they changed hands and became Tower Records.

These stores didn't just charge full retail, they often charged OVER RETAIL prices.

We're not talking about a 2 dollar difference in cd prices either. It's more like a $5 difference.

I have a Media Play here that is about 300 ft. from a Best Buy, so it probably doesn't have long to live....

It is a shame, because the stores employees are nice, friendly, and intelligent. The store still seems to have a policy to make the customer happy.

I on the hand refuse to shop at Best Buy because of bad experiences (yes, I realize BB will still get the money from my purchases at mediaplay but I am not boycotting the company, I am just refusing to shop where service is bad).

Now granted, media play's prices normally aren't very good, except for sale items. But with the replay reward card and triple points, etc. it works out to be a decent deal, combined with the friendly atmosphere and good shopping experience it is well worth it IMO.

Sam Goody can rot in retailer hell. Their prices are ridicolous and all over the place. For example Mediaplay.com had Commando for 6.99. Best Buy charges 9.99. Sam Goody wanted 14.99 - and they wouldn't even price match their OWN FRICKING WEB PRICE of 9.99. The manager refused to do the price match. Said B/M can't afford to match their own Web site - OK, so I won't buy it from you at all and it can sit on your shelf for 2 or 3 months take up space and inventory and then some idiot can buy it for 14.99.

Well hows this for overpricing.....

Wast SunCoast a few weeks ago.Just browsing since theres no way i'd pay there crazy prices when i can save either online or elsewhere.

Heather's LE Tin..$50

Repo Man LE Tin...$50

Ummm the full price is $40!...& only $20 at Best Buy,well probably not now after even they raised prices.

I really want to get Heather's on dvd.Yet you have to get the corrected version with Version 2.0 on the package.I bought the Tin when released, crashed of course.Could send it in & have AB send a corrected version.Yet since i'd want the film in a keepcase rather than crappy cd case.Figured i could just pick it up for $12 at BB.Of course they were only have the defected dvds still, same with other stores.

So my only choise is to pick it up for $20 at Sam Goody.Though now even they are out of the corrected dvds & have the old defected ones,so of course.I'm still without my Heathers!

Anyway i also saw The Evil Dead Elite version priced at $35 still when the full retail is now $15.A few stores finnaly corrected it,but beware!

+ with the outrageously high prices. How would even teens without jobs spend there? I mean surely parents don't get them much for allowance do they? Besides most would be buying clothes & what not already high priced, thus leaves no room for Sam Goody/Sun Coast.Yet if the prices were reasonable,i'm sure they'd draw alot more people in!

The Goody in my local mall was looking pretty picked over about two weeks ago, and I wondered why they hadn't restocked. A few days later I saw they were closing and knew why.

Well thats interesting. They are closing both Sam Goodys on Michigan Ave. Both were right next to each other on Michigan Ave., and I figured one would go...guess the rent is too high..any idea if they will have any sales?

Strange. The mall in Cambridge, MA has a Suncoast, Sam Goody, and a Best Buy. Yet there are no closings there.

I figured that was a natural choice... guess they must all be doing better than I thought (or there is an issue with leases or something else that I'm not aware of...)

Just to speak up in favor of Suncoast, I shop there because I get the 10%+ discount with the replay card, their prices on new releases are competitive, they have a good selection, great customer service, and a reasonable return policy.

I'd rather stick hot pokers in my eyes than shop at Best Buy. Their selection is awful, their customer service is attrocious, and their return policy borders on illegal. If they close my Suncoast, they lose me as a customer.

So? They don't care about customers, they aren't important.

Best Buy Business Model:
Step 1: Piss off customers
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Profit!

Of course, no one knows what step 2 is.

I think Step 2 is "sell them shoddy merchandise and unnecessary warranties"

I'm not surprised they're closing the one in the Orange Mall. There's a Wal-Mart there, a Target across the street, and a K-Mart a couple blocks down. That and the mall is a ghost town other than the Wal-Mart and Sears.

And the one in Westminster Mall has a Best Buy outside the mall. So no shock there. There will still be a Suncoast there.

Damn, the one in Cupertino's been there since the 70's- I used to look at 8-tracks there! It was the first store I ever saw a CD at too. Their prices just suck these days though.

I'm glad that my local Suncoast store will stay open ( for now).
Their prices might suck most of the time but there are a few deals here and there. Plus I think my local mall is awful. There are only 5 stores in the whole mall I go to:
Babbages
EB
Spencers
K B Toys
Suncaost

There is a Best Buy in the parking lot of this mall too. You can pretty much stand oustide of the Suncaost and look thru the glass doors and see the Best Buy. Very odd that they aren't closing but I just got my Replay card and want them to stick around as long as they can.
