best buy - anyone ever exchange "full screen" for "widescreen" dvd?

My brother got me Star Wars Episode 2 and both he and I didn't notice till after I opened the case the disc is full screen format. He bought it from Best Buy and still has the receipt, so I am wondering if Best Buy allows an exchange for same title, but different format?

Depends how anal they wanna be. Since it's open, tho, you better use the "defective" angle and hope for the best. I have found there are stores where they really don't care, and understand, that people sometimes get the wrong version, but there are some stores that are anal about their inventories and WS and P&S movies have different part numbers/UPC codes so some stores insist you exchange pan and scam for pan and scam and widescreen for widescreen. Even if there is no difference in price or you offer to pay the difference if there is. I don't think Best Buy has a set policy on it, tho, because I know stores that do it and stores that won't. Depends on the anal capacity of the customer service clerk working that day, I think.

Circuit City is pretty good about returns. I exchanged my LOTR fullscreen for a WS and they did it without a problem (or receipt).

Twice BB refused to let me exchange a full screen DVD for a widescreen. Both were gifts and I had the receipts. Both were opened before I realized they weren't WS... Probably depends on the BB but the one here in Daytona is awful.

i thought CC store your reciept in their computer, so if you lose your receipt they can look it up for you.

Best Buy and Wal Mart let me do such exchanges in the past. My DVDs were not open, tho, and there was no price difference to speak of.

Bestbuy wouldn't let me do this. I had a copy of Beautiful Mind in FS. I first tried the defective route, and they just gave me another copy of the FS dvd; on top of that they opened that dvd as well (took off the wrapper so I couldn't return it). Then I tried to go to another store and do a straight up exchange and they wouldn't let me do that either.

I have exchanged full for wide but the dvd was sealed...never opened so they should not have a problem as long as the item is sealed. I also had the sales receipt from the original purchase.

I don't see why they would do this once it was opened. You could always sell it on ebay, or give it back to your brother for his birthday.

I traded in a open fullscreen goldmember for a widescreen edition. They could not have cared less.

Only if your total purchase is over $100 (or you request it).

Did it at a Best Buy in Atlanta. Traded in Scooby Doo FS for a WS, got the third degree since I didn't have the reciept.

Just traded a FS "The Santa Clause" (got it 4.99 @ Target) for a WS version at Suncoast

It was unopened.
