Amazon - how do you have two accounts with same email address?

I have been corresponding with Amazon and I just got this in their reply, "As we stated before, however, you are welcome to
open a new account under the same e-mail address." This is in response to my Share the Love program being shut off for my account. I thought that the email address was what constituted a new account at Amazon. So how is this possible? I started the process and clicked "I am a new customer" with my existing account email in place and was told that there is already an account with that email address. I was then prompted with the following three choices:
  • If you have forgotten your password, but prefer to use your existing account just click the button.
  • If you want to access your existing account, fill in your password here and then click the button to continue to the next page of the order form.
  • If you really want to create a new account, just click the button to continue to the next page of the order form.

So if I choose the third option, what happens to my existing account? Is everything refreshed and I start over from scratch. I find this hard to believe. Does anybody have an idea?

Their message was in reply to reinstating me into the STL program and they said they couldn't do it, but said I could open a new account with same email. So does that mean this new account would be able to use STL? What the hell is the difference then?

It sounds odd that the system would allow the third option, which could potentially 'overwrite' and 'purge' someone else account just by using their email address!

Keep us posted...

Exactly what I was thinking. Well, I already wrote back to ask what exactly was meant by opening "a new account under the same e-mail address" and how to go about doing such a thing if it is possible....will keep posted when/if I hear from them....

You can have as many accoutns as you want. The only factor at work int heir system is the password. They claim it was a catch so that couples or families could have seperate accounts if their ISP only gave them one email. ??

On my main email address i have ten accounts. Just with different passwords.

You have to click the third option, it prompts you for yoru NEW passowrd under the payment options.

SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

You're giving away all the secrets of making...er...sharing the love with yourself.

Ok I was being sarcastic. I did but they found out and merged them together. But I assume you can, only a computer would find out. They don't run checks. I mean, make your road, and ave, change email accounts, change first names to shorter nicknames, change cc's, it isn't hard but there is very little reason to these days.

Back in the days of $20 of $20 at buy.com are a different story though.
