I am having a hell of a time finding anything about this online.
Basically.. I need to return a bunch of DVD's I bought elsewhere, to Wal-Mart.
I've done it once today, and they got my drivers license number, and handed me a gift card..
but here's what im wondering: how many times can i do it? is that why they have my license number?
can i do it X times within a certain amount of time or something?
also.. do they keep track of no-receipt returns on a per-store basis? (in other words, can i go to different wal-marts to return stuff)
I really need to know soon
thanks,
jason

It's your karma. I picked up a copy of The Mummy: UE and X Men for raffle prizes. But, that's off-topic....
The return of a product is a store courtesy, not a law, and quite legally, the store can refuse the return even with the receipt. The store can place limitations on how often you can return stuff, and what items can be returned, and require ID. It would not surprise me if a bulletin went to all the chain stores to refuse return on certain DVDs if a few more deals like K-Marts came around.

i know they can refuse to take something. i just want to know how far i can go before they WILL refuse something
in other words.. i might try again in a few weeks, and/or have both of my parents seperately exchange this crap for gift cards so i can get decent movies

I had a friend who worked at CVS who saw a similar scam. At CVS if you buy one of CVS's official products (the one that say "CVS" on it), you can return it without a receipht. So people would go in one week, buy something on sale, and then return it after the sale was over for full price. They didn't request the license number or anything like that. However Wal-Mart has always been with it, with all of the computer technology and what not. I bet you they only let you do it once a month.

I don't know the exact specifics(sometimes I wonder if even they know), but it's something like 3 or 4 times every 6 months or year. And that's per store. So you can go to another store once you hit your limit at a store. Of course different stores(and even different customer service people) will follow different rules about what they will take back. My wife buys lots of stuff, loses lots of receipts, and takes lots of stuff back, so she's hit her limit before.

Since I work for Wal-Mart I suppose I will answer your question.
Usually returns without a receipt are accepted or denied on a case by case basis. I always ask the customer if the item was a gift, etc... After 3 returns without a receipt (which we punch in a drivers license) you must wait until the returns are purged from your license number (can take up to 6 months. And, returns are tracked electronically chainwide. If you return something in California and use the same license to return something in Florida it is tracked. If you don't have a drivers license bring someone who does. Drivers License or an official state issued ID is REQUIRED.

Well, first off thanks for going to Wal-mart to return your stuff. Makes the lines at the other retailers smaller. I think what you are doing is wrong to a point. But beside the moral issue, I think the rolling 6 month rule is at every retailer, even w/a receipt. Some people, like yourself, will purchase, say, a camcorder and use it for the 2 weeks they are on vacation. Then they will try to return it claiming a defect in the device. Kudos to those companies that only give GC or vouchers.

During my pre-real-job days (prior to college graduation), I worked for Wal*Mart. Yes, they do have a limit of 3 returns w/o receipt within a 6 month period. However, that is not a set-in-stone policy. As long as the CSM will override the transaction, you can return as much as you like, as often as you like. However, after 3 returns, the register will require a supervisor override. Then, it is at the discretion of the "supervisor".
As for returns with receipt, those are unlimited. As long as you have the receipt, you can return as much as you want, as often as you want...
