The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread
2025
List thread is here.

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 2nd at dawn.*

*Challenge end date will vary from year-to-year, depending on when Labor Day falls (if it's within 3 days of the start of Sept., the challenge will extend to end of Labor Day. If it's longer, it'll end on the 1st at dawn.)

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Not a lot of suggestions to discuss this year. I did extend the end date without discussion as it was only a day later. I think if the Labor Day weekend is close to the end of the challenge, I'll extend the challenge through the end of it. If the end of the weekend is later than Sept. 4th or 5th, I won't extend it.

Any objections to use this link for the Saturn films? The old one hasn't been updated in quite a while and I made a new one.

1. Switch the link for Saturn films to this: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/s...d+film/ljg765/

2. Add David Ogden Spiers to actor list? He has 44 credits to his name.

3. Add the DC Animated Universe/Original Movies/ Animated Movies Universe to the studio part of the check list? We do already have Marvel Studios listed.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Those three sound good to me. It always sounds good to extend the challenge in my book. There aren't many suggestions because the challenge is running smoothly at this stage. I'm enjoying the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge but I always look forward to the Animation Challenge and will be glad when it gets here.

I figured I wouldn't have anyone complain too much about extending it a day...lol!

I agree that it is pretty good right now, though I do think next year or the year after, it might be time to do something similar as the Sci-fi/Fantasy challenge with the actor and studio lists. They're just getting a bit too lengthy.

Rarefilmm.com has tons of animation, including shorts from many different countries.

Go to "Browse films by genre" and click on animation and a treasure trove opens up to you. All free.

Thanks for posting this. I randomly picked one to watch, just to see and it looks very interesting. I'll have to spend a little time going through this for the challenge. Looks like a lot could qualify for the sci-fi/fantasy challenge as well.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Here's some titles to help jump start everyone's Challenge tomorrow evening. No movies, just episodic ONA's mostly. Most of these skew to an older audience.

Hazbin Hotel - Prime
The Legend of Vox Machina - Prime
Invincible - Prime
Helluva Boss - Youtube (next year Prime & Youtube)
Monkey Wrench - Youtube
Take My Muffin - Youtube
Deadbeat Ends Meet - Youtube
Mechwest - Youtube
Murder Drones - Youtube
Castlevania - Netflix
Castlevania Nocturne - Netflix
Disenchantment - Netflix
The Amazing Digital Circus - Youtube & Netflix

I'll probably start with a few shorts, then give The Day the Earth Blew Up (2025) a second watch.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Hope everyone's challenge is off to a good start! I plan on starting with Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2. I picked up the combo pack from Disney last year when their rewards program was shutting down. Not my favorite of their movies, but I didn't have a copy of Brother Bear 2, so picked it up anyway. I don't anticipate them being great films, but they'll get off my "to watch" list.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm making a point to go through as much G.I. Joe as I can. I will definitely finish the original series as long as I stick to my 5 episodes a day, but some of the later versions might be a tough sell since I never watched them growing up. Just wrapped up Toy Story. Such a great film.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I posted this previously in the SF/F discussion thread, but I figure reposting here is apropos. I confirmed the movies are still available --

WB dropped a bunch of DCAU movies on youtube that can be watched for "free" (ads of course). Still, if you don't have them and can put up with the ads, it's better than not seeing them at all. This is a partial list of what's available; if you don't see a movie in the list try searching for it. Hopefully they'll stay around for a couple of months, at least.

Would 'Godzilla Minus One' qualify since the title creature is CGI animated ?

CGI does count as animation. My main consideration when I think if something counts or not for it, would be how much CGI is used/how long is on screen for? If Godzilla is only on screen for 10 minutes out of a 2 hour film, I'm going to say no, it doesn't count. If he's on screen (or the amount of CGI used) is in more than...50%-ish? (I'm not asking anyone to make a chart here!) it'd count. Think Roger Rabbit amount of animation on screen compared to live action, not Mary Poppins, though I think I've made an exception for that one).

If you go into a movie honestly thinking it'll qualify and it doesn't, there is a wildcard that you can use as well.

I only recently discovered the GI Joe 1980s comic, so I hope to watch the show at some point.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I've had a bit of a slow start to the challenge. I caught some crud and I haven't stopped coughing in almost 2 weeks now. Ugh! It's not anything contagious, so there's that at least!

I did figure out what I'm going to focus on. A while back, someone mentioned that they were doing a complete watch of Disney films and that stayed in my brain. So yesterday, I made a list of the animated films (and mixed live action/animation films) that I consider "Disney." The contents are probably controversial depending on how you think what a Disney film is, but since it's for me, I put what I wanted. It includes Pixar films, DTV sequels, and even a film or two that they just distributed (like Nightmare Before Christmas).

I figure there are quite a few on the list that I've watched only once, a small handful of ones that I haven't ever seen-mainly DTV-and quite a few that I watch on a regular basis. Should keep me busy for a while at last! No plans on finishing it for this challenge, but I do hope to make a decent dent in it.

I used to watch the original show pretty regularly as a kid. So far, it's brought back some memories for me. But it's HEAVILY '80s. I feel like they botched the live action movies by miscasting....everyone.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

With Scooby Doo being gradually removed from Max, I've slowly been collecting DVDs. Some movies I've already had digitally, but today I have out for delivery from Amazon both a double feature of Boo Brothers and The Cyber Chase as well as Season One of A Pup Named Scooby Doo. They were both about $9 each as well. Was looking for both inexpensive, as well as tracking down the red shirt Shaggy movies for months since they never were on Max.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I started watching Star Trek: Prodigy season two and quickly realized I never finished season one. Had to go to the library and check out the DVD so I could catch-up. I'll get back to season two tomorrow. I still don't like the characters at all but as a Trekkie, I gotta watch it.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

How are people's challenges going? I was away for the weekend and not feeling great on top of it, so my watches fell by the wayside. I hope to get some in this week though. My library request for Across the Spider-Verse came in so I do plan on watching that this week and working on more of my Disney challenge.

Re: The 16th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I've been slowly plugging along. One day I'll be motivated, then not really feeling it for a few days. Over the weekend though I did watch the first two movies from the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy. It's not a cartoon in the traditional sense, but puppetry plays a large part. Not only Mothra but the good and bad (wouldn't call her evil) fairies each rode flying mounts that were also very obviously puppets.

I'm impressed that you got the list thread stickied! My sticky/unsticky requests were taking a couple months to get noticed, so for my most recent challenge I just skipped it.

Total luck! I only requested it myself once and noticed that the Sci-fi/Fantasy one wasn't so figured this one wouldn't be either!
