OFFICIAL RULES

-Movies, TV shows/specials, Short Films & Cartoons Count

-The movie or TV show DOES NOT need to be holiday oriented. It could simply take place during the holiday season (i.e. Batman Returns, Gremlins, Die Hard, etc.)

-Although the movie doesn't have to take place during the holiday season, a MAJORITY of the film HAS to take place during the holiday season. No movies with just one scene during the holiday season. If you're not sure, ASK!

-Any holiday from Thanksgiving through New Years Day may count

-A film can only be viewed once, UNLESS you watch it and then watched it again with a commentary

-There is no global goal, shoot for a personal goal. Whatever you want your goal to be go for it. For returning participants maybe your goal should be to beat a previous year's goal.

-Again, like past years there will be a THREE Wild Card option to include movies or TV shows you might watch during the holiday season that is not holiday oriented. Some families have watched movies like Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory every Christmas So anything is allowed, up to 3. Plus, the final week of November, you can count any comedies you watch as double since it will qualify for the November Comedy Challenge.

-Specials such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New Years Rockin' Eve, etc. can count, but you MUST watch the entire special in order to count it.

-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE number your lists! If you do not number your list it will not count towards the challenge

-It doesn't matter how you see the film, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, Laserdisc, YouTube, Streaming services, Theatrical release, it can be counted. Just have fun.

-The challenge will begin at dusk on Saturday, November 23, 2024 and will end at dawn on Thursday January 2, 2024.

NOVEMBER 23
1. THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY (2024) - [Hallmark] ★★★★✰- This was very close to as good as the original movie. It was a delight all the way through. Andrew Walker, Tyler Hynes, and Paul Campbell together as brothers are about as good as Hallmark gets. Loved it.
2. CHRISTMAS IN THE SPOTLIGHT (2024) - [Lifetime] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars)- This was much better than expected. A genuine decent script, super appealing leads, and a strong romance arc.

NOVEMBER 24
3. TO HAVE AND TO HOIDAY (2024) - [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ - This is the second Hallmark movie this season in which a prospective young bridegroom is tortured by the future father-in-law. (The other is Christmas with the Singhs.) This one is a little lighter in spirit. The young couple have only known each other three months and Dad, a pastor, feels it's rushed. Yes, Dad is pretty overbearing, but there wouldn't be much of a film without that conflict. And (huge spoiler here), young love wins in the end. I like that the daughter stood up for herself and her fiance, and the "marriage bootcamp" was a fun idea.
4. CHRISTMAS AT CARTWRIGHT'S (2014) - [Amazon Prime] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars)- A keeper from Hallmark Christmas's past. This movie has a cute concept. A single mom desperate for work ends up playing Santa Claus at a department store only no one knows Santa is a she so much subterfuge is involved. There's also a romance arc with a cute store exec and a little angel magic. Alicia Witt as the sympathetic, put-upon Mom, and a wonderful turn from Wallace Shawn as the angel really make this holiday movie.

NOVEMBER 25
5. KRISTIN'S CHRISTMAS PAST (2013) [dvd] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars)- I've seen this on a number of rec lists, and I finally watched it. It's good! A woman goes back in time to her teenaged years and sees the split between her and her parents in a new light. There are some echoes of A Christmas Carol here, but it's not a retelling. And, hey, we could all benefit from going back and seeing our crazy-ass teenaged self. I wish the ending with the reunion had been a little longer. Can recommend.

6. ON THE SECOND DAY OF CHRISTMAS (1997) [dvd] ★★★✰✰ - . This is a bizarre premise for a Christmas movie: a pick pocket duo of a little girl of seven and her guardian (her aunt) are arrested in a department store after getting caught in the act. The security guard has to take them home and watch them over Christmas until they can be booked on the 26th. Not exactly heartwarming. But it's got a great cast -- Mark Ruffalo and Mary Stewart Masterson. It's also very New York and there's comic relief with the slimy ex-boyfriend as well as a believable romance arc. Worth a watch.
7. CHRISTMAS PERFECTION (2018) [Amazon] ★★★✰✰ - .Got this one off a rec list. It's pretty decent. A woman who is obsessed with everything being perfect gets stuck in a Christmas village world where Christmas repeats over and over and everything is cloyingly perfect. It's cute.

NOVEMBER 27
8. CHRISTMAS UNDER THE LIGHTS (2024) [Hallmark] ★✰✰✰✰ (1.5 stars) - The leads are appealing enough, especially the guy. But the story was underwhelming. Putting together a Christmas carnival on a farm (because it was deceased mom's legacy) has been done too often. The romance was OK, but the woman kept trying to change the guy. She's trying to get him to buy a studio in a city he has no history with (Seattle) because "he doesn't belong on a farm." That's annoying and pretentious. Who is she to run his life? This one just didn't gel for me.
9. OUR LITTLE SECRET (2024) [Netflix [color=#006400]★★★★✰ - . I enjoyed this more than the Lindsay Lohan Netflix movie last year. The script was very good with a fresh concept, some memorable comedic scenes, and fun characters. The romance really worked too. A keeper!

NOVEMBER 28
10. DEAR SANTA (2024) [Paramount+] ★★★★✰ - This was cute, and fun, and much better than I expected. The kids were all likeable, and Jack Black is still insane. Loved it
11. THANKSGIVING (2023) [Amazon] ★✰✰✰✰ - I've watched so much Hallmark already this year, it was time for a change. But this was just too dark and mean-spirited. I didn't enjoy it.
12. DEBBIE MACOMBER'S JOYFUL MRS. MIRACLE (2024) [Hallmark] ★★✰✰✰ - This got better as it went along, but it's still not ranking highly for me this year. Initially, the manic energy of Mrs. Miracle seemed totally out of place on this elegant estate with the serious family. It was just TOO wacky. It did get a little more consistent over time, and the romance was decent. But in general this just didn't gel for me. Too predictable. A little boring. I was relieved when it was over. did like the previous Mrs. Miracle movies.

NOVEMBER 29
13. A 90's CHRISTMAS (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ - I loved the ending -- it was magical. But long stretches of the movie felt like a slog. The "you can't change anything" got a little tired and repetitive. It was like they needed to fill screen time. Still, the main couple was cute and I liked the message. Middle of the Hallmark road for me this year.
14. NUTCRACKERS (2024) [Hulu] ★★★★✰ (4.5 stars) - I loved, loved the third act of this movie. I loved that the boys were so natural--they were real kids, good, bad, and ugly. The movie had enough humor for me and gobs of heart. One of the best Christmas movies so far this year.

NOVEMBER 30
15. HOLIDAY TOUCHDOWN: A KC CHIEFS LOVE STORY (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ - (3.5 stars) I really enjoyed this one. Tyler Hynes was great, as usual. He always plays Tyler Hynes, but that's not a bad thing. The sports angle was fun. Definitely one of the better Hallmarks this year.
16. DECK THE WALLS (2024) [Hallmark] ★★✰✰✰ (2.5 stars) - This one was better than I expected. I wasn't excited about another Christmas house flipping story. But it was nice to see Ashley Greene in a Hallmark Christmas movie, and I liked the gay brother subplot. I didn't appreciate the "big misunderstanding" crisis. That always feels like a cop-out to me on the part of the script writer. It's SOOOOO cliche. But overall, this was an enjoyable watch. The main romance was just OK. I didn't really buy the chemistry.

17. CHRISTMAS QUEST (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ -I loved the Icelandic setting and the whole Tomb Raider-esque quest. It would have ranked higher, but the ending was a let down.
18. THE FINNISH LINE (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ -I really liked the unusual setting and dog sled angle of this one. The romance was decent too.
19. FINDING MR. CHRISTMAS: S01 E06 (2024) [Hallmark+] ★★★✰✰ -I love this show.

DECEMBER 2
20. SINCERELY, TRULY CHRISTMAS (2024) [Lifetime] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - I quite liked this one--quirky and fun and the romance felt genuine. The leads were good and felt real, if that makes sense.
21. A MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (2024) [digital file] ★★★★✰ - Repeat watch. Michae Caine is so great in this. Always fun.

DECEMBER 3
22-23. FX'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2019) [Amazon] ★★★★✰ - (2:53 length). This is excellent in many way. I'm not sure how I feel about all the additions/changes to Dickens' classic, but it was interesting to see something new in this story since I've seen so many versions. It's very dark. I wasn't a huge fan of the actor playing Scrooge (Guy Pierce). He was very dry and very dark. The additions to the story include various sexual abuses which makes it lean more into the horror category than Christmas movie. The bigger disappointment, though, was that the "redemption" section of the story, the part after the ghosts, is very short and underwhelming. Otherwise it would have gotten 5 stars from me.

DECEMBER 4
24. I HEARD THE BELLS (2022) [GAF] ★★★✰✰ - (3.5 stars). This historical was a nice break from the usual Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies. It had some heartbreaking moments and beautiful ones. There are wartimes scenes (the civil war) and personal tragedies, which may not be your Christmas flavor. But it's an interesting story and the ending is uplifting.
25. A CINDERELLA CHRISTMAS BALL (2024) [GAF] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - . I wasn't expecting much from this one. I'm not a big fan of royal movies unless they're particularly well done. But, I have to admit, this one got me. I loved the romance, the two leads were very appealing and had good chemistry. The ending was perfect. On the down side, the setting was obviously all fake and sound-stagey. The castle exterior looked like a matt painting and the interior was not very castle-like. But still will rank highly on my list this year.

26. THAT CHRISTMAS (2024) [Netflix] ★★★★★ - The art and animation in this is superb. I also loved the story and characters. Brilliant.

DECEMBER 6
27. PRIVATE PRINCESS CHRISTMAS (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - Derek Klena as the commanding officer made this film for me. Especially when he sang Edelweiss. Inject that into my veins! I thought the script was a little light in actual bootcamp discipline in the first half. The princess, and the other cadets, were very mouthy and lazy. But I suppose this was a school not the actual military (where that shiz would never be tolerated). Other than that, I loved this script and where the princess ultimately ended up. The romance was minimal until the very end due to the circumstances, but I liked the slow burn. A winner for me.
28. FINDING MR CHRISTMAS- S01E07 (2024) [Hallmark+] ★★★✰✰ - This episode the guys had to dance. Fun.
29. A DANCE IN THE SNOW (2024) [Hallmark] ★★✰✰✰ - I'm glad to see the autism representation, but I found this really boring. It was a slog to get through for me. The main storyline, in which the mother and daughter are making conflicting plans, just didn't grab me.

DECEMBER 7
30. SUGARPLUMMED (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ - This was cute. I missed more of a romance element, and I wish they'd done more with Max's dancing, which was awesome. This is very meta about Hallmark Christmas movies. Is that a good thing? It was a fun watch and something different. but I think I prefer my Hallmark movies straight-up.
31. MARY (2024) [Netflix] ★★✰✰✰ - It's kind of fun to have a new Biblical epic to watch for the Christmas season. It added some new elements which are a bit questionable. But I enjoyed watching it. The actual nativity part felt a little light.

DECEMBER 8
32. LEAH'S PERFECT GIFT (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ - I loved the main characters, Leah and Graham. The mom is SO obnoxious. This is the third Hallmark movie this year about a new fiancé being tortured by an in-law over Christmas. I'm not sure it's all that cheerful as a holiday trope. Leah's grounded and sincere character made the film for me and earned this movie 3 stars. The ending was lovely.
33. SEASON'S GREETINGS FROM CHERRY LANE (2024) [Hallmark+] ★★★★✰ - This one got me in the feels. The modern LGBTQ family story was by far the best all the way around. Go Jonathan Bennet! The two past stories were fine. The feuding in-laws were a little too childish. I enjoyed the subtle ways the stories were interconnected. A keeper.

DECEMBER 9
34. ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS WISH (2024) [GAF] ★★★✰✰ - Cuter than I was expecting. I liked the song and dance numbers and Mario is still appealing.
35. CHRISTMAS AT MILLER'S POINT (2024) [Amazon] ★★✰✰✰ - This is uber realistic, and the actors all look like real people, which is awesome. But it's very much a slice of life picture. There's no real story or dramatic arc, and even things that are brought up are never followed up or resolved. And it just... ends. I have to say I was watching my clock waiting for it to end. Well made, but not my cup of tea.

DECEMBER 10
36. COMFORT AND JOY (2024) [GAF] ★★★✰✰ - (3.5 stars) The "experience an alternate life" trope had been a number of times. This 2003 version features a high-earning business woman with a shallow life getting hit on the head and waking up to find her self a mom of two kids in a low-income family. It works well with just enough sentimentality but not too much. Worth a watch.
37. DR SEUSS' THE GRINCH (2003) [Digital file] ★★★★✰ - Fantastic art on this. Cumberbatch did not at all sound like Cumberbatch, but his Grinch's voice was spot on. I love so many versions of this story..
38. A CHRISTMAS KISS (2012) [digital file] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - If you like movies with a mean girl serious b*tch who dominates for most of the film and finally gets her comeuppance, this film is for you. This is a Cinderella adjacent story where the lowly assistant wins the prince (of a sort). It's a little annoying how long the Cinderella character (Wendy) refuses to -stand up for herself. But fortunately her friends have no such scruples. The ending was worth the angst. Going on my favorites list.

DECEMBER 11
39. HOLIDAY INN (1942) [Amazon] ★★✰✰✰ - There's a lot to critique in this film. The idea of an inn that celebrates holidays is all well and good, but the actual song numbers for holidays like "Lincoln's Birthday" and "Washington's Birthday" are dumb -- and that's even before the blackface number. "Christmas" gets short shrift in this film. Also, the whole plot with two "friends" stealing girls from each other is highly questionable at best. Both Crosby and Astaire come off as real jerks. On the good side, the Astaire dance numbers are lovely. The one with firecrackers--how did Astaire not flinch constantly? Yikes. Overall, White Christmas is MUCH better.

DECEMBER 12
40. ALL I NEED FOR CHRISTMAS (2024) [Amazon] ★★★✰✰ - A fairly strong Hallmark premiere. I liked the music angle and the leads were both very strong and appealing. Nothing groundbreaking, but a good watch.
41. FINDING MR. CHRISTMAS S10E08 (2O24) [Hallmark+] ★★★✰✰ - Shocked at the winner. Definitely the worst actor of the lot, but physically gorgeous. I'll be interested in seeing his movie.

DECEMBER 13
42. BELIEVE IN CHRISTMAS (2O24) [Hallmark] ★★✰✰✰ - I liked the male lead in this. Hallmark has had several "meta" films this year (Sugarplummed is another), and I'm not so crazy about the trend. I could do without the winks at the camera. The crisis point in this movie involves there being too many Hallmark tropes for the love to be real. It just wasn't my favorite storyline, but the town and inn were cute.
43. RED ONE (2O24) [Amazon] ★★★★★ - I loved this so much! It's so, so fun. I loved all the Christmas lore with Krampus, the North Pole, Santa and Mrs. Claus (of course), the reindeer, etc. But they managed to inject so much new material into the universe that totally slays! I loved buff Santa, the ability to make things big or little, a portals. Add in Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans and an action plot, and it's super entertaining. This is one for blu ray and repeated watchings every year.
44. HANUKKAH ON THE ROCKS (2O24) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ -I had fun with this one. A nice, well-rounded script, I liked the romance leads and all the side characters. The various Hanukkah themed drinks and food at the bar were intriguing. A keeper.

DECEMBER 14
45. THE SANTA CLASS (2O24) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - With Kimberly Sustad and Paul Campbell, this was one of my most anticipated Hallmark premiers of the year. It didn't disappoint. The Santa class antics were fun and the romance was strong. All the Santa characters were fun. I love that they added the real Santa to the story.
46. A NUTCRACKER CHRISTMAS (2O16) [Hallmark] ★★★★✰ - I loved the dance storyline and we get to see highlights of the Nutcracker at the end. The girl who plays Clara is amazing.

DECEMBER 15
47. THE HOLIDAY JUNKIE (2O24) [Lifetime] ★★✰✰✰ (2.5 stars) - I loved the holiday decorating in thisDIE HARD. it was next level. But there was too much crying and grieving for me for a holiday movie.
48. CARRY-ON (2O24) [Netflix] ★★★★★ - I loved this. The pace after the first 15 minutes or so was non-stop. Pretty much anything you could think of to do was tried, and more. Perfect ending.
49. DIE HARD (1988) [4k] ★★★★★ - An all-time favorite.

DECEMBER 16
50. FOLLOING YONDER STAR (2O24) [Lifetime] ★★★✰✰- Another solid, middle-of-the-road Hallmark in the 2024 season. I liked the theme of the TV star escaping a social media scandal by hiding out in Vermont. Brooke D'orsay and John Brotherton are both very experienced and solid Hallmark actors, and their romance and chemistry felt genuine.
51. LA PALMA (2O24) S01E01 [Netflix] ★★★✰✰ - Cool series about a tsunami on one of the Canary Islands that takes place over Christmas vacation.

57. CHRISTMAS UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (2024) [GAF] ★★★✰✰- I enjoyed the snowy scenery in this and the romance. The moral lessons were a bit obvious but appreciated. The northern lights don't appear until the very end. They might or might not have been computer generated, but they were worth the wait.

DECEMBER 18
58. THE STAR (2017) [Netflix] ★★★✰✰- The animation is really good. I liked the concept of showing the nativity through the eyes of animals. And the ending was literally awesome.
59. FESTIVAL OF TREES (2024) [Up TV] ★★★✰✰- The was wacky. I wasn't sure about it, but nothing gets me rooting for the heroine more than a competition with a Mean Girl, and the Mean Girl in this movie deserves her comeuppance like no other. The trees were pretty too.
60. GET HIM BACK FOR CHRISTMAS (2024) [GAF] ★★★★✰ - This one is very cute. I loved the romance and the main couple, who I guess are married irl. The songs were great. I appreciated the subplot with the brother who had an intellectual disability. The poshy twat boyfriend was appropriately scummy. A keeper.

61. TRADING UP CHRISTMAS (2024) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰- The concept is pretty silly. Very middle-of-the-road Hallmark.
62. HAPPY HOWLIDAYS (2024) [Hallmark+] ★★✰✰✰- The lead guy is the winner from Finding Mr. Christmas, Ezra. Unfortunately, he's a pretty bad actors. I liked the female lead and the doggos.

DECEMBER 20
63. A ROYAL QUEENS CHRISTMAS (2021) [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰- (3.5 stars) I have to admit, I am a sucker for a good royals romance. This one is cute. I loved the "average joe" family in Queens and the Prince's piano playing. The leads were appealing.
64. CHRISTMAS AT HOLLY LODGE (2017 [Hallmark] ★★★✰✰- This is an "evil developer tries to buy family lodge" story, which is nothing new, but there is a slight twist in that the female lead finds out about the deception early on and tries to ruin the evil ex's stay at her lodge. They could have gone even further with that. I think. Also, the leads are both excellent in this. A keeper.

DECEMBER 21
65. THE SANTA CLAUS (1994) [blu ray] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars)- I have only seen the first one before. I like this series. The first is the best.
66. THE SANTA CLAUS 2 (2022) [blu ray] ★★★✰✰- I liked the hunt for Mrs. Claus and the deSantification process.
67. THE SANTA CLAUS 3 (2006) [blu ray] ★★✰✰✰ (2.5 stars)- Alan Arkin and Martin Short made this a worthwhile watch.

DECEMBER 22
68. COMING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS (2017) [Hallmark+] ★★★✰✰ - My husband pointed out this is a knock-off of Sabrina where two rich brothers fall for the same employee. It was entertaining enough as a one-time watch.
69. MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947) [Amazon] ★★★★★- Such an amazing, heart-felt movie.
70. A CARPENTER CHRISTMAS ROMANCE (2024) [Lifetime] ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars)- This was better than expected. Might be best of year from Lifetime. It's a full-blown romance novel on screen, and the script was decent. I liked the depth added by the subplot of the town fire, the past relationship that was hurtful (but not in a way you couldn't forgive), and the sister bond.

DECEMBER 25
71. NATIVITY (2009) [DVD] ★★★★★ - Possibly my favorite Christmas movie of all time. I watch it every year. The kids are adorable and Martin Freeman is perfect in this film.

72. RED ONE (2024) [Amazon] ★★★★✰ - Second watch this year.
73. DECK THE HALLS ON CHERRY LANE (2024) [Amazon] ★★★✰✰ - Of the 3 Cherry Lane movies this year, I liked the first one, Seasons Greetings From Cherry Lane the best, mainly because of the gay couple and the missing grandfather segment. This one is a close second. The storylines were all solid and tied together well at the end. Man, that house sure has serious turn-over issues though.

DECEMBER 30
74. HOME SWEET CHRISTMAS (2024) [GAF] ★★✰✰✰ - The leads (CCB and Cameron Mathison) are such old hands at these movies, they're smooth as butter. But the script is a very old and overused trope - big city girl (and boy) go back to small town to sell inherited property and end up deciding to keep it and live in the small town. The ending made little sense in terms of the lawyer's new job. But OK. This loses a star for the unoriginal script.
75. JINGLE BELL LOVE (2024) [Roku] ★★★✰✰ - This was better than the reviews led me to expect. It's very Hallmark-ish. I always like a movie with music and with a cute kid/single dad, and this movie has both. The leads were both very appealing.
76. MISTLETOE MURDERS: S01E01 (2024) [Hallmark+] ★★★✰✰ - A fun start to a new mystery series to watch.
