2024 Awards Season Thread

Nikki Glaser is set to host the upcoming 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards.
The awards show telecast will take place on Jan. 5, 2025 at 8-11 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage),” said Glaser. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so). It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”
“Some of my favorite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues when Tina, Amy, or Ricky have said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear,” she continued. “I just hope to continue in that time honored tradition (that might also get me canceled). This is truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I’ve binged over the past year. It was all worth it. (‘Below Deck: Sailing Yacht’ Season Four will be nominated, right?).”
Glaser is the latest high-profile comedian to host the Golden Globes. She joins the likes of Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Jerrod Carmichael, all of whom have helmed the annual awards show.
“Nikki Glaser is a comedic powerhouse whose daring and unfiltered humor is the perfect match for the Golden Globes,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep the audience entertained all night.”
Glaser recently made headlines with her appearance at the Netflix roast of Tom Brady. Previously, she has released the specials “Good Clean Filth” and “Someday You’ll Die” on HBO, the latter of which earned her an Emmy nomination. She currently hosts “The Nikki Glaser Podcast” and the reality show “Lovers and Liars,” a spinoff of the reality dating series “FBoy Island.”
“Nikki Glaser brings a fresh and unmatched candor to her comedy and to the Golden Globes,” said Jay Penske, Chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions and Penske Media. “Her unapologetic style made her an obvious and compelling choice as host for this year’s event. We’re hopeful this could be the first of many Golden Globes that Nikki will surprise and delight our CBS audience, as well as our audiences around the globe.”
“The Golden Globes has a rich history as a night for entertaining, provocative humor,” added George Cheeks, Office of the CEO for Paramount Global and president and CEO of CBS. “Nikki Glaser is a comedic force whose funny, bold and irreverent comedy will continue that legacy and further establish this special as a can’t miss event on CBS.”
Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment return as executive producing showrunners for the 2025 awards telecast. Dick Clark Productions will plan, host and produce the annual Golden Globes.
The 2024 Golden Globes saw a noticeable rise in viewership over the prior year’s telecast. It drew approximately 10 million viewers across all platforms when factoring in seven days of delayed viewing, per Nielsen data. That is the largest audience for the show since 2020.
I can get behind this. I've been a fan of hers since her MTV show years and years ago and she kills it on the roasts. Hopefully, she brings some of that roast energy and does what Gervais had done.

I think he was awful. And it was painful watching him bomb like that. I like Glaser on roasts but haven't liked any of her stand up specials. So I think she should be good at this.

At least I don't think Nikki will talk about toilet paper getting stuck below the waist like in one of her HBO shows.

I guess Sean Penn will not attend the Oscars
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...142825647.html

Sean Penn went on a rant against the Oscars while defending the biopic about a young Donald Trump at the Marrakech Film Festival.
The 64-year-old actor, who has won two Academy Awards, spoke during a press conference Tuesday and accused the Oscars of being “afraid” of embracing “The Apprentice” starring Sebastian Stan as the president-elect, 78.
“The Academy have exercised really extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the bigger world of expression, and in fact, have largely been part of limiting the imagination and very limiting of different cultural expressions,” said Penn, per Variety.
The “Mystic River” star, who was casually chain-smoking during his rant, said the Oscars and other award ceremonies should be viewed as “television shows first.”
“So I don’t get very excited about what we’ll call the Academy Awards [except for] when a film like ‘The Florida Project,’ or ‘I’m Still Here,’ or, you know, ‘Emilia Perez,’ of the things that are likely to happen this year,” he explained.
Penn then addressed the controversy over Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice,” which is not expected to be a major contender during awards season, despite receiving an 8-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
“When something sneaks through, it’s to be celebrated,” said Penn. “It’s jaw-dropping how afraid this [so-called] business of mavericks is of a great film like that,” he continued.

Re: 2024 Awards Season Thread
I've seen some great stuff this year, but most of the films that have been coming out recently that seem to be making Oscar plays have looked extremely uninteresting (obviously just my personal preference). I think it's been a fantastic year for smaller, more independent cinema, although I don't really know where that line is drawn anymore. I think A24 in particular straddles that line, because they have really come into their own this year and started making "smarter blockbusters" like Civil War.
