There’s a couple movies I’m interested in seeing but overall this wasn’t exactly a blockbuster year for award worthy movies.

It feels like this is shaping up to be another Nomadland year at the Oscars. A Best Picture winner than no one saw, very few cared about, and people will forget 5 minutes after the award show.

Why does "blockbuster" need to equate to award worthy? You've said you haven't seen them, so how do you know the quality? I never understand this... ok... so nobody saw Nomadland... that doesn't mean it isn't the best picture. If people care about film and awards... GO SEE THE MOVIES.
Not many people remember the award winners anyway.
(not directed specifically at you, I see stuff like this said a lot).

Re: 2024 Awards Season Thread

I was referring to “blockbuster” in terms of popularity. There’s no Oppenheimer, Barbie, or Top Gun: Maverick this year to bring attention to the awards.

As interested as I am in seeing a few of those, I can say with confidence that a movie like Conclave or The Brutalist just aren’t going to be big hits at the B.O. no matter how good they are.

It may very well be the best film of the year but if something like Anora wins, nobody is going to remember it.

Just in terms of recognizable movies, this is not a good year.

I essentially agree with you, even if all of those movies are literal blockbusters

There's a dearth movies with blatant "hooks" this year. I'm of course not saying anything about the quality of any films or anyone who enjoyed them. In fact, if you saw something like Conclave and loved it, awesome! I'm glad you did. To me, it came off as very stuffy and uninteresting.

Previously this decade, we got EEAAO, Banshees of Inishiren, Triangle of Sadness, Past Lives, American Fiction, Don't Look Up... In addition to the more high concept blockbusters that got nominated. And I recognize that people are going to have mixed feelings on the quality of each of those, but they certainly felt... more accessible? Less up their own asses? I know Anora has gotten a lot of love, as does most of Sean Baker's stuff. That's probably the one I'd be most likely to check out, even when his previous works have not really grabbed me in their advertising. I don't know what it is with me and his stuff. Maybe I feel it comes off as too award-baity?

I've liked a lot of original movies from this year and I'm sure some will be contenders for Best Picture, since they've been recognized even in this thread, but they aren't getting the level of buzz right now that many others are:
  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • Longlegs
  • Love Lies Bleeding
  • Didi
  • Hundreds of Beavers (technically a 2022 film, but only publicly available this year)
  • Sasquatch Sunset
I'm still catching up on a couple, as well, like The Substance

Re: 2024 Awards Season Thread

I've seen a lot of good movies in 2024, but I think this year has been pretty thin at the top end. I blame the strikes, but it might just be cyclical. There's still a bunch I need to see, but the only thing this year that I've loved, rather than just liked, is Anora. So if it does win best picture, I'll definitely remember.

But either way, I don't really have any personal investment in whether or not people see these movies or whether the Oscars get good ratings. I don't get why supposed movie fans won't just see the movies, but it doesn't affect my day. Tár is my favorite movie of the decade so far and it made like $7.

Didi's the kind of coming of age film with a child protaganist that they almost never nom beyond 1 or 2 categories. Even 40 years ago when something like Stand By Me had universal critical acclaim, fan acclaim, box office and a well known director at the helm.

Up until I saw those GG nominations, I had no idea that Challengers was competing as a comedy. I guess all it takes is a few "Hey I fucked your wife" jokes?
Pulling for the Trent Reznor Score though. It's incredible

Props to Sebastian Stan for the double GG nominations. He has grown a lot as an actor over the last few years. I much preferred A Different Man to The Apprentice, but the latter is likely the role that will continue to garner nominations.

Up until the GG nominations, I didn’t realize Heretic was a comedy. I guess Hugh Grant still showing he has those comedic chops from his romantic comedy days.

There's maybe 2 jokes that serve to break tension in the first half and some frank conversations between the girls before meeting Grant, but it's a horror movie. They desperately need to reorganize their categories. They're egregious with category fraud.
(Of course, yes, we should all take awards with a grain of salt)

I guess I was wrong to get my hopes up that Nosferatu would be nominated for something, anything.

Also I wouldn’t mind if comedy/musical threw in horror.

My only hope is that Pamela Anderson wins.

Would it be awkward if they sit Pamela Anderson and Sebastian Stan at the same table?

I love this idea. It's not like Musicals and Comedies have anything in common besides being marginalized in the Oscar voting. Why not add Horror to the grouping?
And I still don't get why the GG doesn't consider musical biopics 'Musicals". It's an artificial designation anyway, why not include those films, where the main character sings in multiple scenes, in the groupings of other musicals? I bet there's more musical scenes in A Complete Unknown than in Emilia Perez.

BTW : Have you already seen Nosferatu?

Definitely don't hate the idea, although I feel they should do a best picture category for each of the major genres.

I guess comedy, drama, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, documentary, animated... Am I missing any? Historical? Would that be a good catch-all for sword-and-sandals, westerns, jidai geki, et cetera?

Dear lord, no more awards. They already hand out 27(!) awards during the broadcast, including the exceptionally stupid Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement which this year will definitely go to Wicked, a film that will probably win Best Musical or Comedy award anyways. At least the award for best popular movie is gonna go to one that has a song about the importance of being popular.

At least the award for best popular movie is gonna go to one that has a song about the importance of being popular.
And Moana 2 wasn’t even nominated despite it doing better box office than Wicked (so far) and seemingly just as popular (no pun intended).
