Movies that get a bad rap?
You know the ones that are oft defamed, but turn out to be ones you like that basically got drubbed critically and financially.
I don’t think Green Lantern, the extended edition is that bad of a movie. Sure it’s not top DC or comes close to a Marvel movie, but I really don’t think it’s that bad. Reynolds is always good, charming, funny, handsome, he’s got it all and makes the movie.

Terminator Salvation
I'll defend that movie all the way to my grave.
It gave people what they wanted - the future war. People complained and we got Genisys and Dark Fate
The BluRay behind-the-scenes documentaries really showed the passion the crew put into the film.

I’ve always liked Salvation as well. I mean Bale and Yelchin. Just great.

I wish Letterboxd had a "Sort by difference between your score and average score" for this reason

Re: Movies that get a bad rap?
The first thing that springs to my mind.
When I was a kid, I thought the movie was incredible. This was before The Simpsons or any adult themed animated show, so a beer drinking, sexed up duck really came across as subversive. For the first time, I was seeing humor I felt was on the same level as MAD magazine. Then you throw in the gross monster tenacle and special effects sequences at the end, the movie had every thing I wanted to see as a 7 year old. I couldn't understand why my parents hated it. I watched it again thirty years later as an adult, and I found it thoroughly entertaining.
Were the audiences in 1986 expecting a children's film instead of a grungy weirdo movie? Because I honestly can't figure out how the movie almost instantly gained this reputation of being a disaster.

I saw Ishtar opening night, and thought it was hysterical. I still think if it wasn't inexplicably so expensive, it would have been much better received.

Hudson Hawk? I think it was a box office flop but frankly a fine comedy particularly for that era. I make sure to buy HH whenever it hits a new format.
The ultimate cut of Batman v Superman? I agree the theatrical version which gave it such terrible buzz is a choppy affair. But makes far more sense in the much longer ultimate cut. Snyder is not a great director but his visuals in the superhero genre are still unsurpassed.

Same. It’s just a fun movie!
And speaking of Costner’s flops, I actually enjoy The Postman. It created an interesting post-apocalyptic world.
The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro. It’s fun and atmospheric as fuck!
I think nostalgia plays a part but I still enjoy The Saint with Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue. It’s good old 90s cheesiness.

Friday the 13th Part 5- the combination of sleaze, dark humor, and some pretty sick kills make it one of my favorites of the F13 series.
The Ghost and the Darkness- it was kind of hated by critics and had a troubled production but I think it's one of Val Kilmer's better movies of the 90s.

It's okay if I completely ignore a few things and...completely divorce The Last Jedi from every Star Wars movie that preceded it. It's just not a good Star Wars movie and appears to have sunk the franchise's appeal on some fundamental level. If it had been released as The Last Knight as its own thing and stripped out the Star Wars IP, I guess it wouldn't be so bad.

Back to the Future II
Maybe it is not universally panned but a lot of people think it is the weakest of the 3 movies and confusing but I thought it was the best Back to the Future movie and the equivalent of Empire Strikes Back and Godfather II where the sequel exceeded the original.

Oh man. NOTHING compares to the bad rap Heavens Gate by Michael Cimino received. It’s a damn fine film.

Yes its an imposter Jason as the killer is an ambulence driver who's kid was killed by one of the kids at a halfway house. Its also got one of my favorite kills ever when Miguel Nunez is impaled while his girlfriend sings to him while he's taking a shit in an outhouse.

I dig it too as I've always thought The Future War against the machines and Skynet could be a movie in itself. It was nice to finally see it.

The most entertaining Spielberg film I've seen in decades has always gotten a bad rap and I don't understand why. It's a comedy! And Spielberg clearly meant it as a comedy. And it's funny! And, besides, it's got Karen Allen coming back. How could I not love it?

Critically and financially?
Transformers The Movie (1986)
Yes it's a complete cash grab as they destroy all the old toys and bring out the new ones. But the animation is amazing, the voice cast they got was top notch, there are few missteps in the plot, and the soundtrack is something that wore out my cassette player as a kid. One of the few movies that I saw in the theater multiple times and it might be the first that my parents let me watch without them.
