Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (S2E07) -- "Those Old Scientists" -- Crossover with Lower Decks - 7/22/23
https://ew.com/events/comic-con/star...0e1300019ac562
If you weren't able to be in San Diego this weekend to catch the first public screening of the Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover episode of Strange New Worlds season 2 at Comic-Con, you're in luck.
Paramount+ is releasing the episode, titled "Those Old Scientists," on Saturday to coincide with the Star Trek Universe Comic-Con panel, a little over four days in advance of the show's traditional Thursday premiere slot. You can go to the streamer at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PTto catch Jack Quaid's Brad Boimler and Tawny Newsome's Beckett Mariner appear in live action alongside the likes of Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and "Hot Spock" (Ethan Peck) — which is a joke Newsome ad-libbed during the shoot for the episode.
Directed by Jonathan Frakes, and written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff, the crossover sees the Lower Decks crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos (still in animated form) investigating a time portal. They accidentally activate the tech and send Boimler back through time. He arrives in the timeline of Captain Pike (now in live action), and the U.S.S. Enterprise has to figure out how to get him home without Boimler drastically changing the course of history. Once it seems like they've figured things out, in comes Mariner.
New episode and the crossover with Lower Decks dropping in less than 2 hours

Yep, they dropped it early. (Probably to avoid people getting spoiler-bombed by SDCC attendees.)
And wow. They didn't just pull it off... they did a downright dazzling job. It wasn't just done for laughs, it actually moved a few of the SNW storylines forward in cool ways.
The idea of a musical episode terrifies me. But if they do that with the finesse they did with this one? It might just work.

Is there any sort of primer needed for those who haven't watched lower decks?

They pulled it off, 10/10. This has become my favorite show currently running.

Loved the animated intro.
Everything about this episode was great.
The thought of Numero Una as a “pin-up” poster was great… and then they showed it at the end. That has me rolling.
So glad it didn’t take itself seriously.

[plugs ears]I'm not listening.....
OMG! Had no idea it was dropping today!!!!
Now I'm stuck at work and have to wait until I get home to watch it...
This show is in real danger of becoming my second or third favorite Trek series.

The ep I've been waiting for. 👍🏿
Pros:
-Just about everything
-Pelia!!!
-Lower Decks Cerritos Uniforms in real life.
-"TOS"......😂🤣
-Boimler: "Rrrriker"....😂🤣🤣
-Live Action Boimler Scream! 🤣😂
-Mariner and Uhura bonding scene....Fuck Yeah Sistahs!! ✊🏿
-Animated Open and Animated SNW back end
-Mariner and Boimler commenting on how slow TOS era folks speak. As you know, the fast talking/pace on Lower Decks is a common criticism from Oldhead Trekkies.
-Lots of Enterprise Archer era love. 👍🏿👍🏿
-The FX Screen shot of the shuttle passing behind Boimler and Mariner while they tried to steal the shuttle was fuckin' awesome.
-Again, same as last ep, the Enterprise shots in space. I swear they changed something this season.
Cons:
- Noticed M'Benga was present, which is good, but he hardly had any lines...
-Boimler telling Pike "you never know how many more birthdays you'll have.." It's a Con because...Reminder, Pike is seriously injured in his future..NOT KILLED.

I was hoping that Mariner and Uhura would end up in bed together.
"You know, I already have a girlfriend back in the twenty-fourth century, but she's an Andorian and they have poly relationships, so she won't mind..." (glances directly into the camera)

Loves the play on the TOS name. Fun episode.
Seems like this season has mostly been filler to set up the Gorn stuff for next season. Not that I mind. Even the unconnected episodes are still great. Just seems like they put any type of season arc on the back burner.

I think that mission was off the books, so, as of 2267, Pike is either missing or presumed dead.

I really loved this episode, but I do have one kvetch about it. Uhura is studying Cardassian and Bajoran. And, last year, we saw a Bolian serving on the Enterprise.
It sort of annoys me when they drop aliens we didn't see until the TNG era (the Nausicaans were mentioned, but they showed up in an episode of Enterprise). It makes it seem like they never found any new planets or new civilizations in the century between TOS and TNG. The Trills were mentioned in Discovery, but DS9 already baked them into that era of the Federation with Dax.
Though it might be interesting if the Enterprise were to visit Bajor and/or Cardassia before the occupation we saw the aftermath of in DS9.
And speaking of Trills, I would like to see Dax show up. In this time period, the host was probably Audrid. (And there's actually a story in one of novels that involves Audrid Dax, Christopher Pike, and the aliens from the TNG episode "Conspiracy.")

I had already started a thread.
No biggie.
I loved this episode! And it actually moved some of the stories along. I think Boimler's conversation with Chapel in the turbolift will lead to Spock ending his experimentation with his human emotions and push him back to T'Pring. The rebound will lead to the (seemingly) emotionless Spock we see in TOS.

But that was the very complaint from the People with Disabilities community concerning how the writers have handled Pike's situation... They were like, "Hey, he's gonna be Disabled, NOT DEAD FUCKERS!! Stop having Pike talk like he's gonna die!!".
