2023 Emmy Awards discussion -- Show: 1/15/24 on FOX (Host: Anthony Anderson)
Nominations will be announced this morning.
It is possible the ceremony doesn't happen until the end of the year or next year...

It's weird that The White Lotus has migrated from Limited or Anthology Series to Dramatic Series. Only one character made it from the first season to the second. I am not sure what the rules are in this sort of thing, but clearly this is different than Big Little Lies where the whole cast returned. If White Lotus were in Limited Series it would have cleaned up at the next Emmys (as Season 2 did earlier this year at the Golden Globes), but now it has to go up against Succession and The Last of Us, much stiffer competition.

Interesting that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver isn't nominated in Outstanding Talk Series, the category it has dominated for years. I wonder if they didn't submit?

Not surprised it wasn't nominated, but the final season of Atlanta deserved a nomination.

Was Silo precluded?
Cool that Jury Duty got a nomination.
How is The Bear a comedy series?
Not that I really care about the Emmys. It rarely makes sense to me, particularly since the nominees are based on one episode (submitted) as I understand it.

Usually 30 minute series are Comedies and 60 minute shows are Drama series. There are exceptions (Wednesday this year, for example). And while there is a lot of drama in The Bear, it is also funny, and submitted as a Comedy series. Also remember these nominations are for Season 1 of The Bear, not the just-aired Season 2.

Just realized that Harrison Ford didn't get his first Emmy nomination for Shrinking.
He deserved a nod.

It was sure as shit funnier than Barry this year though. Even NoHo Hank wasn't funny this year, once he left Dave & Busters.

Funny, they basically broke up Talk Shows and Variety programs because Jon Stewart kept winning it. Now he's back and the dominate brand is John Oliver who has been moved back to Variety program (Which only has 3 entries, John Oliver, Black Lady Sketch Show and SNL.) I think it's time to re-merge the categories.
The only one of the actual Talk nominees I watch anymore is Seth Meyers so I'm glad to see him maintain his nom from last year.

The Bear is not and never has been a comedy. Just because there might be things you laugh at here and there doesn't make it a comedy.

Program Time Eliminated for Comedy and Drama Series Categorization
Categorization based on program length for a comedy or drama series has been eliminated. Episode length will no longer dictate submission categories. Instead, producers will now determine category submission, with the stipulation that the Television Academy's Industry Panel reserves the right to review the producer's preference. Comedy and drama series are defined as programs with multiple episodes (minimum of six) in which the content is primarily comedic for comedy series entries or primarily dramatic for dramatic series entries. In addition, the ongoing theme, storyline and main characters are presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision. The exception is programming under 20 minutes, which must be submitted in short-form categories.

I'm not sure how Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza are supporting actresses for The White Lotus. I guess the position is there are no "leads" on the show.
I know this would never happen but I would prefer there be a limit to how many actors/actresses from one show can be nominated in a category. For example, I love Succession but half the nominees for lead actor are from that show. There are other actors who are just as good on TV but the slots are stacked because, shockingly, a good show got a bunch of good actors to be on it. It just makes it boring since fewer people/shows are recognized overall.

I was surprised to see Brian Cox back in the running this year because....
Also I was surprised that Culkin and Snook sought Lead Actor nominations, as both have run in the Supporting categories in the past. Anyway, Supporting Actor is essentially a lock for reigning winner Matthew Macfadyen already. And maybe getting Snook out of Supporting will allow Rhea Seehorn to finally win her much-deserved first award, but who am I kidding, Jennifer Coolidge is gonna win again, in a new category.

Hell, if anything, Succession is far more of comedy than The Bear. It's like 60 minutes of insult zingers back and forth.

The rules changed again last year. Run time is no longer a consideration. Basically the producer of the program gets to decide, with the Emmys reserving the right to change the categorization if they don't agree that it's "primarily comedic" or "primarily dramatic". I guess the producers of The Bear feel it's "primarily comedic".
