RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

I started seeing reports out of Italian media that he died.
https://www.repubblica.it/spettacoli...40/?ref=search

The Wrap seems to be the first US site reporting and confirm:

Ray Stevenson, a longtime character actor best known for starring roles in “Punisher: War Zone” and the “Rome” television show, has died at the age of 58. He had most recently made his Indian cinematic debut playing the imperialist bad guy in S.S.Rajamouli’s Tollywood smash ‘RRR.’ While his passing has been confirmed, the cause of death is currently undisclosed.

More to come…

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

Damn, that’s too bad. I liked him a lot. He never quite made it to leading man status although I thought he was a great Frank Castle in The Punisher. He always had a big presence in the movies he was in.

58 is way too young and he always looked like he was in decent shape. I wonder what the cause of death is.

Damn that’s too bad. And he’s in the new Ahsoka series as well. The last thing I watched with him was Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday.

If you've never watched Rome on HBO... do yourself a favor and get on that.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

I guess he was in Italy working on a movie as I see on his IMDB and that’s why the Italian media reported it as dex posted. Sounds like it was a sudden passing.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

Yea, this is what the Italian article (via Google translate) said:
Died while shooting his last film on Ischia, Ray Stevenson , the British actor was 59 years old. His death occurred this morning at the Rizzoli hospital on the island. Stevenson had been shooting Cassino on Ischia for a few days , directed by Frank Ciota and in which Ugo Dighero also stars . On Saturday afternoon he suffered an illness that required hospitalization.

Today the actor's conditions, already very serious at the time of hospitalization, have worsened and shortly after he died.

I actually remember him more from Dexter than anything. I’ve only seen Punisher: Warzone one time a long time ago.

That's super sad - he's a great "that guy". I also first saw him in Rome but he's great in the Thor films, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Other Guys and King Arthur too.

Definitely. He stole every scene he was in. Actually stole that entire show.

RIP

I liked his take on the Punisher, but I liked him as Volstagg more.

Requiescat in pace Titus Pullo.
Ray Stevenson was so great on 'Rome' and I was always routing for him to go places. He mostly was a No. 2 to the main villain and didn't lead that many movies, but Kill the Irishman and Punisher: Warzone are pretty good.

Way too young. I'll always remember him for The Other Guys.

Yeah, he was so great on that show. Just a blast, so cool and so much fun.

BTW : I just checked the Rome cast on IMDB -- I never realized that Octavia of the Julii was played by recent (and most deserving) 2023 Oscar nominee Kerry Condon.

Damn, RIP. First became aware of him in HBO's Rome and loosely followed his career in the years that followed.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

I've never seen Rome but from all the comments here I need to get around to it. I loved him in Kill The Irishman and King Arthur and Black Sails, And he was fun in the Thor movies. I never saw him in anything that I thought he did badly in.

It was Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones. And he was the prototype for Bronn -- but on the show a lot more.

He was also Volstagg in the first three Thor movies. Underutilized, IMO.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

I was lucky enough to interview Ray back when PUNISHER: WAR ZONE was getting a home video release. He was so down-to-earth and generous with his time. About five minutes into the interview, we gave up on The Punisher and just talked about ROME for 20 minutes. He loved doing that series and loved that I loved it. RIP.

I'll echo other comments. Rome made me a big Stevenson fan, but I liked him in pretty much everything he did afterwards. I'm sad to see this.

IIRC, my first post on this forum was a rave writeup on PUNISHER WAR ZONE.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

Just heard the news. Wow, I'm stunned. Was not expecting something like this at all. Very much enjoyed his guest starring roles in Black Sails and Dexter but, as others have said, it was his performance in Rome that really showed what he was capable of as an actor. One of the most memorable, and human, television characters of all time. Have never been able to watch the '13' scene without my eyes watering. Just saying Vorenus and Pullo is doing it again. He will be missed.

Re: RIP: Ray Stevenson (The Punisher)

That's a bummer

A couple months ago I was binging Black Sails (a show that aired back from 2014-2017) and Ray Stevenson is fantastic as Black Beard in that show
