Kandahar (2023, D: Waugh) -- S: Gerard Butler

Tom Harris (Gerard Butler), an undercover CIA operative, is stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down. The cast includes Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, Travis Fimmel, and Elnaaz Norouzi. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Kandahar opens in theaters on May 26, 2023.

This is from the director of Greenland and Angel has Fallen

Getting out of the Middle East with your translator must be a new sub genre.

How did he shrink down enough to fit inside the bottle?

This will make for a great double feature with Guy Ritchie's The Covenant.

Shitty that this is getting released this weekend with everything else. Eh, either way, it will or has already made it's money back overseas.

I'll watch this at home. Young people don't give a rat's ass about Gerard Butler movies.

Plane did okay earlier this year. Made about $52M worldwide. But, it also had Lionsgate behind it, who put a small advertising budget into it.

This movie doesn't have a major studio behind it. It's not going to make much money. This should have gone VOD.

Re: Kandahar (2023, D: Waugh) -- S: Gerard Butler

I saw this last night. Thanks to my A-List membership, I wind up seeing a lot of stuff that I would pass on if I wasn't paying AMC a flat fee for a month's worth of moviegoing. I was the ONLY person in the theater (which is always fun - no distractions). That said, I think you can safely wait for streaming on this one. It's not an awful film, but it's certainly a departure for Butler...there's a surprising lack of action in this, and when there is, it strives for realism. In other words, you're not going to see Butler go all "Rambo" in this. It's a film that is very much trying to give viewers a real sense of what the situation over there is like.

By comparison, I liked the silliness of Plane slightly better than the seriousness of Kandahar.

I had some Vudu credits and rented this last night. It's not a bad movie, but it was really serious dealing with the ramifications of the war in Afghanistan. Not a lot of action and fun like Plane. Just some long car chases and a few explosions and shootings.

I can see why hardly anyone saw this in the theater. It just didn't feel like must see escapism entertainment.

This is now on Netflix.

Kind of a forgotten Butler action movie. It was on Hulu for a few years, but I guess no one really caught it there. It should get more eyes on it now.

The Blu-ray is awesome. They should release it on 4K at some point. I think there's a foreign 4K release but it's not English friendly.
