I thought this was pretty entertaining and had some laugh out loud moments. Patton Oswalt is perfectly cast as the inattentive, but regretful father who tries to reconnect with his estranged, suicidal son (played by the writer/director of the movie) by catfishing him as an attractive young woman. As things start to spiral out of control, the movie does a fairly effective job of balancing the cringeworthy comedy aspects with a few serious dramatic scenes. My major criticism of the movie is that it ultimately paints itself into a corner that it can't quite wriggle itself out of. In other words, it fails to stick the landing. While the movie's final 15 minutes deliver the dramatic fireworks that the storyline has been building up to, it all feels very contrived and kind of dumb, and the resolution comes off as abrupt and unsatisfying. I would have preferred a finale that found a more thoughtful way to address the issues between the father and son. Still, if you're looking for a movie that somehow manages to combine elements of Mrs. Doubtfire with the Manti Teo story, you could do a lot worse.
