Do you care about movie spoilers?

I did a thread about this many years ago and thought I would do an update and see what you all think now in 2022.

Do you care about movie spoilers? Do you try to avoid spoilers until you actually see the movie? Or do you not care and just read everything about the movie?

Does it depend on the type of movie? Like a big popular IP like Marvel, DC or Star Wars?

For me, yes I do care to an extent. Big popular tentpole movies that interest me I usually try to see right away to avoid spoilers. I work in the media business, so I can't block spoilers from entertainment sites or social media. I use many of those sites for work related reasons. Horror movies I also try to avoid spoilers due to potential shocking twists or kills that are unexpected. I won't read spoiler threads of movies that interest me until I can actually see it and play off someone's comment than making a blind assumption that's wrong and sounding like a jackass.

Yes, avoid them completely. Never understood it, never will.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

I selected "Depends" but not due to popularity but due as to whether I'll see it. If I'm never going to see it, I'll see all the spoilers. If I happen to watch it in the future I'll probably forget them anyways.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

Of course. The whole point of a new story is to take you on a new journey. If you've been there or know how to get there already.... what's the point?

I say this as someone who had The Sixth Sense and Usual Suspects both spoiled by Usenet in the 90s.

I don't miss Usenet. Kibo can suck it.

Most times I don't want to know the plot before I see a movie.

Mostly yes, but for some, meh! (Like tentpole movies ala Jurassic Park Dominion etc. where the spectacle is the point. Half the time if I see a spoiler I'll forget it while enveloped in the movie anyway.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

I always do my best to avoid spoilers for pretty much every movie.

Spoiler etiquette has gone to shit in recent years. Movies that are on week 2 in the theater will have spoilers splashed all over social media. Even DVDTalk has gone downhill as far as spoilers go. In many cases, even if I avoid specific threads about the movie, someone will spoil it in an unrelated thread.

There were these assholes (I'm assuming Star Wars trolls) going around Facebook and posting in unrelated discussions that a certain character dies.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

I said yes. Maybe I should have said depends on the movie or show, but mostly I don’t want to know what’s happening beforehand.

I only seek out spoilers if I don’t care anymore (not a movie but about halfway through Dexter: New Blood is a recent example where I was frustrated and read things before watching the episodes).

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

For months leading up to its release, Lightyear had a nice trailer, that gave you the tone of the movie, some of its characters, but didn't really go into any plot. Then the week before it came out, there was a new trailer that made it clear
Spoiler:
Buzz had gone so far into the future everyone he knows is now dead
. I really wish I hadn't known that, and feel cheated that I wasn't able to be surprised by this turn of events just as Buzz was. I wasn't expecting anything like that, and would have been surprised.

I liked the first, vague trailer they've been playing for Nope which got me interested in seeing the movie. Now they've switched to a new trailer that seems to be filled with tons more information. I don't know for sure because I haven't seen it. I get up and walk out of the theatre for a couple of minutes when it plays.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

Yes, I think it's good etiquette to post them appropriately. If I decide to click on one to see what the conversation is about, that's on me.

I got in an argument on another hobby forum a couple years ago with guys who were discussing the MCU and were just posting every major spoiler that ever happens in those movies. Their logic was basically "if the movie's been out more than a week and you haven't seen it, that's your fault". I decided I didn't want to interact with a bunch of idiots like that so it was my last ever post on that forum.

Re: Do you care about movie spoilers?

Don't care unless it is something that I actually want to see. Then I will try to avoid spoilers for a reasonable amount of time.
