RIP. So recognizable when you hear his stuff. Blade Runner is still one of my fave soundtracks.

I have the red vinyl from almost 10 years ago? I think it's OOP and goes for a lot of money now.

I also read that he died to complications from COVID.

Chariots of Fire vs Raiders of the Lost Ark for Best Original Score had to be one of the five toughest Oscar choices in history.

His Chariots of Fire score helps make that movie.

So this is really hard for me. I grew up on his stuff, starting with Chariots. Then I dug into his past music endeavors like Aphrodite’s Child and his solo stuff. I also almost got tickets to his last recorded performance in Doha, which I would have gone had I scored them. I listen to his stuff almost daily. I was also really hoping for some more new stuff and movie soundtracks. He was unique in every way and will be sorely missed.

He almost replaced Rick Wakeman in Yes in the late 70s. Didn't work out but he met up with Jon Anderson and they recorded together. The song "Friends of Mr. Cairo" was played a lot on local FM and is still the first thing that comes to my mind in relation to him.

His collabs with Anderson were pretty good. State of Independence was a great song. Chrissie Hynde did a great take of it that was featured in the movie Single White Female.

I can't imagine BladeRunner working as well as it did without that score.

RIP

His film scores were great. My favorite album of his was Spiral. Specifically the track The Unknown Man.

RIP Vangelis

The Blade Runner score is damn near hypnotic. I love it.

Chariots of Fire is one of those rare scores that has been elevated above just being a film score and worked its way into the societal lexicon.

I hate to say it but while the score fit perfectly with the movie, It's part of the reason the movie's detractors say it's a boring movie. I've bought every version of the movie (VHS-4K) over the years, so I'm not one of them.

His scores helped a LOT of movies. Oliver Stone's Alexander would be close to unbearable if it weren't for the score by Vangelis.

Yes is one of my least favorite bands, but I love that song and album.

Re: Film composer Vangelis dead at 79

My first exposure to Vangelis was the LP Aphrodites Child: 666, released in 1972, I was 16/17 years old and just starting to experiment with pot, I remember it was quite the experience high. I still have the LP, even bought it on CD to listen to in my last car. I have his Heaven and Hell LP, his early LP entitled Vangelis O.: Earth, and the LP Jon and Vangelis: Short Stories. He was one hell of a composer, I loved his music. He'll be sorely missed.

Sad new.

I have the cd of Themes with songs from the movie he composed. My personal favorite is the opening of The Bounty.
