Of the two films out this weekend about young kids with powers... this is the way better film. It is very low-key and a slow burn, but really well done.

Just watched this on AMC+. Starts off slow, but keeps getting darker and darker. The kids did a great job. There were a small amount of practical effects that were really well done too.
The youngest blonde daughter and mother are mother/daughter IRL.
There wasn't a whole lot of dialog which helped with the subtitles.
And don't be alarmed by AMC+'s runtime listing of 5h15m.
It's 1h57m

Wow, this was a seriously intense and gripping movie. One of the best films about young children I've seen.
I hadn't even heard of it, and surprised it wasn't discussed more, although I'm sure the opening scenes of the boy abusing and murdering a cat caused a lot of viewers to bail.
Very strongly told story. Interestingly, as much as I feared the horrible things the boy did, I didn't hate him.
Sure, I was rooting for a small child to be killed, but the same way you'd want an injured animal put down.
So many wonderful details adding to the mystery of what's happening.
It's a rough movie, one you don't feel right saying you "enjoyed", but it's one of the best of its kind I've ever seen.

Saw t back in November. I gave it 4 stars on Letterboxd. I mentioned it was a slow burn with a constant sense of dread.
