I'll be checking this out tonight.

According to Variety, this has a budget of $100M plus and is currently tracking at around $15-18M opening weekend. They are hoping it gets around $20M
I'm sure this movie looks a little out there for some and may not appeal to them. I guess we'll see.

Just got out of seeing it moments ago. It was awesome. This might be my favorite summer movie so far. Very funny with great characters. It's also geeky as well with the gaming culture being the center point. Ryan Reynolds is so charming in this. Jodie Comer was great as well. Taika Waititi was freaking hilarious as the over the top game boss.
And
at the Chris Evans cameo and nods to Captain America and Star Wars.
I walked out with a smile under my mask. Highly recommended.

Fun movie.
There were probably a bunch more Easter eggs than I caught. Deadpool zip lining in the background. Hugh Jackman voice cameo. The Chris Evans cameo was great.
Anyone who watches Killing Eve knows Jodie Comer is a STAR.
Signs are pointing to Shawn Levy being tapped to direct Deadpool 3.

More fun that Suicide Squad AND it has more heart! The Jackman & Rock voice cameos
The Evans cameo and then Tatum dancing
Taika was exceptional... trying to jump to his feet
Reynolds' team knows how to put on an entertaining film on along with all the marketing that went with this.

Early estimates are predicting over $26M opening weekend, which would exceed expectations. I posted above what early tracking was.

I’m actually kind of surprised this is getting positive reviews. I thought it had bomb written all over it.

Some of Reynolds' schtick has worn really thin with me, but I still enjoyed this. I've been a Comer fan since White Princess, and she great. Plus, Harrington finally gets the girl.

Just saw it in 4DX. It was a fun movie; my kids liked it and knew who the game streamers they had in the movie were (I didn't). Lots of Easter eggs.

I didn’t like it as much as you guys. Thought it was okay. Didn’t really get a lot of the internal logic of the film. Based on how video games work and are played it just didn’t make much sense to me. The first game disappears forever the moment the sequel comes out? Nothing like that has ever happened, or would. Plus the ending with the servers getting smashed and the bridge collapsing held no suspense for me at all. I got pretty bored.
That said it was cute and had some heart. Reynolds is an extremely charming and charismatic actor. And who didn’t get Misty at the Alex Trebek cameo? (Though again that Jeopardy question didn’t make any sense, especially that early into the story).
Glad you guys liked it so much. I think my son did too.

I recognized Ninja (known for Fortnite) and of course, Guy uses a Fortnite weapon in his fight. I didn't know the other streamers.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

From my movie review page ORBI-WAN GOES TO THE MOVIES:
FREE GUY (PG-13) Extremely entertaining, sweet and heart-felt fantasy about freedom, love, friendship, sacrifice and intellectual property theft. Trust me, it makes sense.Let’s be honest. The trailers for Free Guy, with Ryan Reynolds are funny. Very funny. And I will tell you right now, as far as the overall plot, tone and, frankly, heart of Free Guy is concerned, the trailers don’t even scratch the surface of everything going on. There is a lot to discover here, and surprises I frankly did not see coming.
In general, here’s what’s happening. Guy, the blue shirt guy, is happily enjoying his life as a Non-Playable-Character bank teller in the video game Free City. He enjoys the same routine every day, hanging with his friend, the bank security guy Buddy (Lil Rel Howery), and his life is pretty much on auto-pilot. Until one day, he manages to obtain a pair of sunglasses worn by the avatars of the players of Free City. And things begin to change for him. He discovers there is more out there than his routine, and he wants to expand his reality, so to speak. And now that he can make his own choices, he begins to affect Free City in unexpected ways.
This catches the attention of not only the game’s developers, especially gaming mogul and egomaniac Antwan (Taika Waititi), but also a couple of low level programmers - Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) - who suddenly realize that Guy is exhibiting traits based on code they wrote for a game they collaborated on, and it seems the code was stolen from them for use in Free City. Determined to uncover the truth, Millie enters Free City as her avatar Molotovgirl, eventually crosses paths with Guy, and they team-up to find evidence within the game to expose what Antwan has stolen.
That is the gist of Free Guy, but there is oh-so-much-more going on. The Free City gamers are enchanted by Guy’s efforts to be a rogue “good guy” in a game based on typical video game violence. As Millie/Molotovgirl and Guy spend time together on their mission, it becomes apparent there is a real attraction - and we find out later it’s not by accident. And as Guy gains skill and confidence in his abilities to manipulate certain aspects of the game, the genuine joy and surprise he expresses is absolutely delightful.
LEVELING UP: There is a lot more depth in Free Guy than the trailers give away. I only wish that they had toned down the cruder moments to appeal to a wider family audience. I adored a couple of completely out-of-left-field but wonderful cameos that caused the audience I was with to gasp. Taken as a whole, the imagination, attention to detail and the level of heart and humor make Free Guy a winner for me. And I am sure I will enjoy it even more on repeat viewings. Free Guy is getting 4 out of 5 lightsabers from me. And it is no surprise to me that Disney and Reynolds are actually in talks about turning Free Guy into a franchise. There are definite possibilities here.
NOTES FOR PARENTS (Mild Spoilers): Free Guy is rated PG-13 for a lot of fantasy violence, brief language, and some sexual innuendo and crude discussion. Language - One full “F” bomb and an incomplete “motherf****” is heard. I believe “G**d***” is spoken once. Other profanity “sh**”, da**”, “as*”, d**k” and others are scattered throughout the film. The middle finger gesture is shown a few times. Violence - Basic bloodless slapstick cartoony and video game violence seen in the trailer dominates the frenetic action. Guy gets his face a bit bloodied a few times when he steps out of his role as a background character. Sexual Content - Frankly, mostly middle school level humor is shown, both in dialogue and actions. Some player avatars briefly engage in sexually suggestive dances and gestures. Other crude humor is infrequently scattered throughout the film.
MID- AND AFTER-CREDIT SCENES: No mid or after credit scenes.

This movie was a lot of fun, my wife 16-year-old daughter and I all found it really enjoyable. There were some great cameos that I won't spoiler here but it was a nice easy to watch movie that allowed me to shut my brain off for a little while. I'd swear Comer is some sort of changeling based on how different she can look from scene to scene, she is fairly pretty in a girl-next-door way but I'd swear she can look like two actresses in the span of 10 minutes.

Saw this today and was very entertained. Laughed out loud at several moments. It seemed a lot like the plot of Tron if it were told from Tron's perspective. Since that's also a Disney property, I guess there's no chance of a copyright thing happening. Reynolds played his usual role, but I found Jodi Comer quite impressive. Hard to believe that's the same woman as Villanelle, but then again, that's what actors do.
