Maybe a little with older pic of Damon, but only features that are similar are mouth and chin.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I rented this last night and enjoyed it overall. The first 25 minutes or so felt pretty shaky to me and I was having a hard time buying into the story but the pacing picked up a bit and things started to get better around the time Guy started Leveling Up.

I liked Reynolds take on a super positive character but it felt like he was trying to do a Jim Carrey impression at times. Comer was great and so was Keery. I didn’t catch many of the voice cameos until the end credits.

I’m not a huge big gamer and haven’t played much since the PS3 days but I was able to follow the story reasonably well. My wife isn’t a gamer at all and said she followed it just fine as well.

I liked the Capt. America/Avengers reference but the Star Wars reference fell flat for me. I’m not sure why. The half created bodybuilder character got more than a few chuckles out of me.

Saw this last night with the kids (12 and 10) and we all enjoyed it. I enjoyed the storyline and references I could get. They filled me in on the reality of the online gamers commenting. Enjoyable fun.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I risked Ryan Reynolds overload by watching this shortly after Red Notice, but I thought it was fun. I DO play open-world games (and enjoyed the split-second of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey they showed), so I could relate that way, and part of the sensation was because the character was a nice guy, like someone going through GTA saving people instead of killing them. (I assumed that all of the vloggers were actual vloggers.) I admit I laughed at the Marvel references. I was unfamiliar with Jodie Comer, but she was a nice girl-next-door who became smoking hot in the sunglasses. Even as MolotovGirl without the glasses, she looked kind of girl-next-door.

I, too, am late to the party on this one...bought it on VOD a while back, but didn't watch it until this week. It might just be my favorite film (so far) of 2021. It's similar in tone (if not actual story) to Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which I also loved.

Watched it a few weeks ago. Was very enjoyable. My 12 year old son was yelling out all the streamers who were interviewed during the movie, which was a thrill for him.

Same thing happened when I watched it with my daughters. I had no clue who they were.

Ha! My 13-year-old had the exact same reaction and I had no idea except for the Minecraft guy with the blue hair. #oldguy

My niece also recognized all the streamers. I swear, in about 10 years, I'm not going to be able to answer any of the retro-pop culture on Jeopardy (speaking of which, I thought it was awesome to get an appearance by Alex Trebek)

I enjoyed it while watching it a few weeks ago, but I couldn't tell you anything about it now. Just felt like a video game version of Truman Show while watching so it was fun to see that addressed in an outtake/deleted scene. Taika Waititi was a highlight though.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I took advantage of an xfinity customer rewards discount that let me rent a $6.99 HD film for $1 this past weekend and this was one of those films I probably would have watched in theaters. I thought it was a ton of fun even if at times it was slightly long, but I definitely would not have regretted it if I had seen in theaters.

I was aware of Jody Comer from Killing Eve, so I knew she was a great actress and crazy cute, and that carried over into this film. I get that she is supposed to be a more attractive version of her IRL character when she is in the game, but it is hard to see Jody Comer as anything but adorable/cute looking in this game regardless of which world she was in.

Solid special effects, and even though I have not played traditional PC/Console games in many a year, I still enjoyed all of the Easter eggs that were clearly thrown in to the film for gamers to ooh and awe at. Even the obvious MCU Easter eggs were great.

I get why this film became a fan favorite and did pretty well in theaters well before films like Shang Chi opened the doors for regular Joes like myself to come back to the theater.

Finally was able to catch this. As usual, for me a little Ryan Reynolds goes a long way. The guy is so annoying.

This cross between Ready Player One and The Truman Show didn't quite work for me.

If anyone has both, and they have a preference, D+ has it 4K DV. HBO Max just HD.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

Just watched this on Disney+. It was pretty fun, but trifling. All I knew going in was it starred Ryan Reynolds as an NPC who becomes self-aware. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that it co-starred Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things) and Taika Watiti. And some of the other cameos were fun, too, though I think they should have left the Channing Tatum scene on the cutting room floor. I felt like the first two-thirds were pretty good, but the final act was disappointing. It felt a bit too cartoonish--even for a movie about a video games--and it tied everything up a little too neatly.

We just watched it last night as well, but on HBOMAX. I had low expectations, but enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Wife and kid loved it. Kiddo is a gamer, so she understood the references and Twitch/YouTube stuff way more than we did. Only one I knew was DanTDM. Kiddo used to watch him constantly. By far my biggest laugh was the quick Marvel part and the cameo there.

I somehow missed all of the trailers for this so didn't have any clue what this was about. Kids turned it on and I thought it was hilarious, brought me back to my Grand Theft Auto days a number of years ago and my kids know the Youtube references and playing video games so enjoyed it as well.

Great movie. I haven’t played video games on a regular basis since N64, but got all the video game lingo, so I was able to follow along.

Great cast, great music, great story. Well done.

Re: Free Guy (2021, D: Levy) -- S: Ryan Reynolds -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I finally caught this on D+ last night, and didn't care for it at all. Decker has already listed most of my criticisms, including Taiki Waititi's ridiculously bad performance. Reynolds was channeling Jim Carrey at times, and Lil Rel Howery is a dollar store Kevin Hart. I did get a laugh out of the YouTube personalities, and even knew all of their names thanks to my 11-year-old.
