Underrated Westerns
What are some Westerns that you consider underrated? I would choose: "Comes a Horseman" (Stunningly shot by Gordon Willis), "Open Range" (Costner's best IMO), "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (Great cast and beautifully shot by Roger Deakins) and "Bite the Bullet" (Epic). I'm thankful I was able to see both "Range" and "Ford" in the theater. Wish I could have seen the other two on the big screen.

Appaloosa is a fantastic film directed by Ed Harris. It seems to never get mentioned when discussing Westerns.
I don’t know if it’s “underrated” but I love the Russell Crowe/ Christian Bale version of 3:10 to Yuma.
And speaking of Christian Bale, Hostiles seems mostly overlooked but was my favorite movie of 2017.

Gunfighter's Moon (1996)
Saw this years ago and thought it was very good. Lance Henriksen was great in this, too bad there no blu-ray copy of this film.

I was going to list this one but it was nominated for Best Picture. It’s also highly regarded. I’m not sure how underrated it is.
At any rate, it’s a fantastic movie that touched a topic that no other western had touched, especially surprising for 1942.

The Elvis movie Love Me Tender. It was his film debut, and despite the title wasn’t so much an Elvis movie as a Western with Elvis in it. The title was changed to cash in on Elvis’s rising fame.

Re: Underrated Westerns
I watched the Criterion Monte Hellman two-fer a year or two ago and I really liked them both. Especially The Shooting.
The Bravados is good, but his other Henry King western, The Gunfighter, is even better. Although that might not be as underrated.

Re: Underrated Westerns
Far from underrated.
First prize at Cannes Film Festival
Nominated (but didn't make the cut) to AFI's Top 10 Westerns of All Time
Declared a National Treasure by The Library of Congress and preserved as part of The National Film Registry
It's hard to come up with underrated westerns because by now they've all been revisited and reevaluated, and those that deserve exceptional recognition have received it. It's more about their not being well known, everyone that knows about them appreciates them.
One that I've always considered great, but not extremely well known is THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE with Glenn Ford.
