"Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”
Thus began the odyssey of one A’Ziah King, aka ZOLA. From acclaimed writer/director Janicza Bravo, Zola's stranger than fiction saga, which she first told in a now iconic series of viral, uproarious tweets, comes to dazzling cinematic life.
Zola (newcomer Taylour Paige), a Detroit waitress, strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who seduces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism” rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale.

It looks like A24 is back to giving their films wide releases in partnership to AMCs. All my local ones will get this and tickets are already on sale, starting with early showings on Tuesday the 29th. They did alright opening Midsommar during that holiday week. Those numbers don’t seem likely though of course.

I’m all in on more Riley Keough.

This definitely was successful in translating the outlandishness and absurdness off the Twitter thread to film. It felt like Spring Breakers and Sean Baker had a baby. Everyone in it is great.

I've seen the trailer for this so many times now (at the cinema) I feel like I've already seen the movie.

Riley Keough certainly seems to be trying to play all different sorts of white trash characters.
It was entertaining in moments, but I didn't care about Zola enough for this to really work for me.

Profoundly depressing movie. LOL. Empty, nihilist, just a sweaty void. Man, I feel old.

Re: Zola (2021, D: Bravo) S: Taylour Paige, Riley Keough
I really enjoyed it, but I’m a sucker for road trip movies and this is a hum-dinger. I thought it was really well made and the two leads were a lot of fun. Weird seeing Nick Braun play a character so similar to Cousin Greg that I kept doing a double take — it’s exactly the same guy, I half expected him to split in Orlando to work in the Roystar amusement park. I also liked that it was short. Never felt bloated, I never glanced at my watch.
Nothing deep, but a fun breezy ride.

"They start fucking, it was gross."
-Movie dialog review of the movie.
Well made flick, it's also one of the most "Florida" movies I've ever seen - it captures the vibe of hot fall days better than most movies. Just the right balance of trashy and trashy.
The Reddit perspective change was great. Ending was a bit annoying.

This was fun, but ultimately forgettable. I didn’t really care about Zola the character either.
It was cool to see dude from Succession.

I was into it but waiting for the big payoff at the end or something that redeemed one or some of the characters and wonder how they got Keough and Braun for this.
The guy who played the pimp was good.
It was entertaining for the 1:25 that it ran though but that repetitive twitter chime was annoying
