I always like these movies with these storylines, but just about all of them disappoint. This seems no different. Comes out Good Friday. You know, to cater to Catholics.

Apparently this is based on the 1983 novel Shrine, and not a remake of the 1988 film.

The Unholy (2021) -- S: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Cary Elwes, William Sadler

The Unholy follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister. The Unholy is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Evan Spiliotopoulos, written for the screen and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, and is based upon James Herbert’s best-selling book Shrine.

No, this is not a new movie. It actually came out in theaters back in April. But, with many theaters still closed back then, I guess there wasn't much interest here.

Anways, it just came out on DVD and BD yesterday and I rented it from Redbox. I honestly didn't think it was as bad as the reviews made it out to be. I think JDM made this watchable for me. Yeah it's a religion based horror movie, but it doesn't go crazy with the religion. I thought it had some creepy moments, especially the opening scene that set up the story. The CGI for the antagonist in the climatic scene did look a little off though. No new territory covered. It's a very 90's style movie. The supporting cast is decent. It's only 99 minutes, so the movie goes by pretty fast. I put the movie on at Midnight last night and before I knew it, it was already 1:30 and ending.

It made some money. Made $30M worldwide.
