Finding 'Ohana (2021, D: Weng) - Netflix

A summer in rural O‘ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings when a journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage.

An obvious riff on The Goonies... in Hawaii.

Its treading that cute/annoying line very carefully there.

This is right up my 6 years old’s alley. I’m sure we’ll watch it.

And I’ll be honest, I have an irrational love for The Goonies so I’ll gladly watch it too.

My 7YO son is starting to shy away from the girl centric shows/movies but hopefully he'll be interested in this.

This was cute but not particularly memorable. It really wants to be The Goonies but just misses the mark. Their wasn’t much tension in the treasure hunt because it lacked an antagonist like the Fratellis on their trail. The older brother was pretty funny but the main girl was fairly annoying. It wasn’t really her fault. Her dialogue sounded like it was written by a middle aged man trying to sound like a hip pre-teen girl. Her dialogue was grating at times. There was also some supernatural nonsense tossed in at the end which didn’t really work.

The flashbacks would have worked better if they hadn’t been a direct ripoff of Drunk History.

Also, at over 2 hours, it felt about 25 minutes too long.

But for Goonies fans, there is a cameo role from an original Goonie and a couple small references to that movie that I caught. I thought that was a clever touch.

Just saw the ad for this and added to my list. Will give it a whirl with the family.

Wow, I thought this was great. Excellent musical score too.

Kelly Hu still looks amazing. Good job by the rest of the cast too. Some good comedy, adventure, and practical effects.

And nice showcase of Hawaii.

Dissing LOST though. Hella messed up

I only saw the Goonies once, and it was many years ago, so I don’t understand any connections there, but this was fun as an Indiana Jones-lite adventure and showcase for Hawaii. I didn’t care for the ending, though.

Really? Not one single similarity?

Call me dumb, but I remember nothing about the Goonies other than a bunch of kids on an adventure.

That's funny, I thought the same thing. It was distracting. She'd say stuff like, "That's wack, yo". And I kept wondering, do kids talk like that?

I felt like they were trying too hard with it to be like Michael Pena in the Antman films.

It was ok. Slightly cliche in spots, obviously borrowing from other films and some touching moments. Wasn't sure why Kelly needed to use the patch, they never mentioned she had a nicotine problem, did they?

Yeah, that definitely felt like remnants of a subplot that was cut. We see her with patches on her arm at the beginning and then a few shots near the beginning, the most consequential being a shot of her in the background changing them. I assume there was a subplot of her trying to quit smoking and being stressed out from life in NY.

I found this movie to be a lot of fun to watch and while the sister and brother could be grating at times, the girl he crushes on that ends up accidentally involved in the treasure hunt did a great job with her role. Also, yes, it was nice to see Kelly Hu on screen again as she gorgeous.

Saw it last night with my 9 year old daughter. Enjoyable and a good story with Goonies elements to it ("Hey you guys!").
Thought it was a bit long and could have benefitted from a few trims. The ending freaked the little one out a bit. Overall, not sure I would have paid money for theater watching but a good weekend movie on Netflix.

I found it funny how they translated the grandfather's pidgin/accent into the subtitles so you could actually understand what he was saying (if you're not from Hawaii). Agreed about some of the dialogue. I like that they recognized some of the more ridiculous tropes like the bridge being rebuilt... I also liked the disconnect between the treasure and the curse. Kind of a cop out ending but hey, it's a kids movie.

Also all I could think was how much that land must be worth.
