What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

See the poll question. I allowed it for multiple choices.

I think from the executive producers of....

is the lamest selling point for a movie that I have ever seen in a promo or trailer.

I mean who really gives a shit who the executive producer is? 9 times out of 10 they have no creative involvement or input in the movie. They just help get the movie financed most of the time.

I voted studio...but a sure-fire way to know that a movie is a stinker is if it has "[known name] Presents" as part of the promotional materials.

Re: What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

I think it's a bit of a toss-up between studio and executive producer on which is least useful in determining the quality of a movie, with some exceptions. For example, I'll always give Pixar films a look (unless it's Cars related).

The vast majority of the time "[known name] Presents" really means "we paid this person a lot of money to attach their name to the film". However, there's some exceptions to this. For example Jet Li's Hero was a "Quentin Tarantino Presents" film, reportedly because Tarantino liked the movie and had to persuade Miramax to release it theatrically.

Re: What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

I think in the Spring of 1985, there were about a dozen movies released to theaters "from the producers of POLICE ACADEMY!!"

Most of them bombed. All of them were terrible. Moreso than POLICE ACADEMY.

Moving freakin' Violations...

Re: What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

How about a short while after a movie's release:

"The #1 Comedy in America!!"

The movie might have opened in 7th place, but if there happen to not be any comedies above it, they can market it as the top comedy release.

Studio/Producers etc.

Writer/Director has more of a direct impact on what you see on film.

Re: What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

OogieLoves had a poster with the line "from the Marketing Visionary who brought you Teletubbies, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Eloise."

If there's a role less appealing than "marketing visionary" for judging the quality of a film, I don't know of it.

All of them. I voted 'Other'

Trying to 'sell' artistic creations of any type to the masses of dummies, who have no artistic discernment or taste, is the bane of any form of creative endeavor.

I would never have believed that line was used if you hadn't shown us the poster.

And what the hell are Chazz Palminteri and Jaime Pressly doing in a film like that?!

I remember the Outlander trailer having the tagline of "From a Producer of Lord of the Rings." I had never seen a singular selling point like that before.

Well, at least they're being honest that art had nothing to do with it.

"The #1 family comedy in America" is one I've heard, just to splinter that off further.

Yeah, his name plastered all over Chungking Express is annoying. Then again I do thank him for the Rolling Thunder line.

Re: What do you think is the worst movie selling point?

All of the above.

The only studio that immediately draws my attention is Pixar. At this point, I will always see (and purchase) anything Pixar puts out.

There are a handful of directors that pique my interest too (but only if they're directing... not producing or some other lesser credit).

Otherwise, I'm drawn to a movie on its own apparent merits -- premise, buzz/reviews, and the quality of the cast in some cases.
