Six Feet Under "Ecotone" 7/31/05

David and Keith get comfortable with their new family life; Claire is shocked to discover she and Ted share a passion for politics and Ruth finds empowerment in the woods.

I understand them wanting to cut the tension with comedy, but the Ruth stuff was too silly for me. As for the ending, while it was completely predictable, it still got to me.

Great episode. After the first couple episodes I thought this season would be a letdown, but they have really made up for it with the last few.
Couldn't have been a better way to let Nate go...David right by his side. For me it fits b/c I think the most emotional moment of the show was when Nate told David the first time that he had/has AVM and he started crying. This was kind of the realization of that moment.
Anyway...sucks to see him go, but THIS SHOW couldnt go any other way.

I didn't see his death coming, at least not in this episode. After reading the first few posts of this thread, I knew something bad was going to happen, though.
My first two guesses were Maggie taking her own life out of guilt and Brenda killing Maggie for more or less "stealing" Nate.

Wow. Dumping your pregnant wife for your step-sister, while in the hospital from a brain injury. That's one way to go. Nate deserved to die after that shit. Stoner David was great.
Fitting that the show started and ends with the death of both Nathaniel Fishers

I didn't even recognize stoner David at first. I was expecting the outcome but I didn't think it would come in this episode but it was touching.

Heavy. Figured Nate wouldn't make the series finale, but still. Harsh they had him dump Brenda and then croak. Loved Stoner David. He's as good a Shaggy as Matthew Lillard.

They should've had Ruth get mauled by the cougar. Good episode with the exception of her scenes. It completely took me out of the moment. I was glad that she wasn't at the hospital for all the drama, though.
I'm not sure I like the ending. It does not have me looking forward to the next episode. I kinda hope they skip ahead, but I guess we have to see Ruth's reaction.

Sad episode. It was somewhat cool to see al of Ruths Ex's again (Especially Aurthur), and of course, Nate 'died' the same way Lisa supposivley did.

I actually wasn't expecting him to die at the end of the show... I figured the whole episode was a dream either A) during Nate's Coma or B) after Nate died on the spot. Not that he would be "okay" and then die. The episode seemed kind of surreal. I almost didn't believe anything I was watching was actually happening. Nate came through with flying colors which is something that just doesn't happen on this show.
I'm sad to see him go. Nate was a great character, and it looked like he finally found happiness with a good woman (albeit his ex-step-sister lol)

One thing that's always bothered me about SFU is the political non sequiturs that have plagued this series from the start - a character suddenly slamming Bush at the breakfast table or isolated remarks about the war that have nothing to do with the plot - but at least they threw in an opposing viewpoint this time. I think Claire could be happy with Mr. Normal if the politics don't get in the way.
I didn't find the episode to be totally predictable, but I never believed Nate was out of the woods. It was nice he finally found peace, love and a definitive ending to the whole Brenda saga, but he never got to resolve the Maya issue. At this point, I think her best chance of growing up normal would probably be with Keith and David. I guess now the question of her paternity isn't as important as it was before. Either way, she's an orphan. Poor kid.
It should be interesting to see how Ruth reacts and how the whole thing will wrap up. Whatever happens, after a mediocre and muddled couple of seasons in the middle, I'm glad to see that this show has apparently managed to redeem itself in the end.

See, I think Claire and the Republican Lawyer will actually work out. Think about it, all her other boyfriends have been guys with the same idealogy and careers, look how they turned out. This is a guy that actually challenges her. He's not a bad guy either. I know I wouldn't stay in a hospital all night after a first date. You hear about republicans and democrats getting together all the time. Without a doubt, best episode of the year. I would have thought if they killed him off, it would have been last episode, starting with the his death date being in this episode, they really shocked me in the end. Should make for an interesting rest of series.

I was spoilered for this episode, so it didn't come as such a shock to me. Ruth has gotten on my last nerve one too many times.

What a great episode last night. I was expecting Nate to be dead at the beginning of the episode...having him die at the end caught me off-guard. A very sad moment, but very well done.
