I have a little confession to make... For several years now, because of my obsessive nature... I rent brand new versions of DVDs that I already own to replace them if they get crapped up... Mainly I have been using Movie Trading Company to do this since they don't put anything on the DVDs they rent... I was a little curious as to how many other DVD addicts there are that share my indulgence? If not, maybe you should start it works pretty well...

I think the bigger question is, what are you doing to your DVDs that they constantly need replacing?

And probably borderline illegal as well. Personally I try keep my DVD in good enough condition that this doesn't become an issue.

"Indulgence" or outright stealing? Not to get on my high horse, and although you may not be the only guilty one here, it's still not the best thing to do. Other people rent the discs, and so your crapped up version is now screwing over many other people.

I have almost 2000 DVDs and have maybe 1 or 2 that have gone bad (negligence). Not sure where you are going wrong (other than the entire rest of your post).

He's either renting DVDs of movies that he owns that got scratched or something; or he's renting DVDs, ripping a bootleg, and returning the DVD-R.

The day I start renting DVDs, keeping the rental disc and sending back a defective one like a fucking moron, I'll shut my mouth.

I worked at a video store where somebody was renting movies and returning the DVD-R copies he made at home. But then he got lazy and stopped replacing the DVD with a DVD-R copy and would just slap his home made printed lable on a a blank CD-R. We called him and told him we were going to charge him for all those movies (which we could have done) unless he brought back the originals. We got all our original DVDs back.

So, OP, how often have you done this? I don't know the Movie Trading Companies policies, but I'd be willing to bet you are breaking a membership agreement with them, and perhaps even the law.

Perhaps the DVD's he is swapping them with are the pirated ones he has been buying, which would explain why so many of his discs appear to be defective.

I would think the place he is renting his discs from will find out soon enough anyway.

It sure is dumb - I mean, it's the sort of thing some of us might do as a one off (Though I never actually have), but not as often as this guy.

isnt everyone being a little hard on this guy? (unless he's replacing them with bootlegs) and how do you know the discs are "brand new"? People treat rentals like shit, and youre probably ending up with a disc in worse condition than yours.

I guess it's clear that this guy has no concept of what quality is - he may be watching pirate DVD's through a damn snowstorm, but as long as he can see a picture he obviously thinks that's ok. Compared to that a rental copy must look good to him.

I find that a lot with people who watch pirates regularly - they are prepared to out up with pixelation, poor sound, burned in subtitles etc because of the kudos of being able to say "I saw X movie last night", at which we are all supposed to say "wow, did you?"

I like to wind them up - ask them what sound format it was in, 5.1, DTS etc. People like this usually don't have any idea what the terms mean. Ask them if it's anamorphic, full frame etc...great fun.
