I'm surprised that the mods haven't closed this thread yet.

What he seems to be doing is something like this: say you have a copy of a rotted disc that doesn't play any more, say "A Bridge Too Far." He'll rent the title to get a copy that plays, and then return the rotted copy.

That's reprehensible on so many levels it transcends the usual selfish egoism we normally see from casual pirates. Even though he could easily exchange his defective disc through the distributor or retailer, instead he (1) sticks a business who rented him the good copy in good faith -- and who had nothing to do with his own copy being defective -- with a worthless copy. And then (2) he puts the next innocent customer who rents the copy through the process of settling down to watch a movie only to discover it won't play all the way through, and dealing with returning/exchanging it.

People like this aren't worth the vacuum it would take to suffocate them.

I generally don't like to throw stones. But clearly this person is fucked up. If he has an "obsessive nature" then why does his personal DVDs get "crapped up"? It just doesn't make sense.

I'm curious what crapped up means. I've been buying DVDs since 1998 and I have only had one that I had to replace due to it getting heavily scratched and that was done by one of my kids. I find it hard to believe someone could be ruining enough DVDs to need to switch them out with rentals on a frequent basis. How do you even know the rental disc is going to be worth keeping?

Wow... that's what I get for being honest... first off... I very seldom do this... in fact I have only done it a a handful of times... I take extremely excellent care of all of my dvds... I am a little neurotic when it comes to them... However, I felt that this was something that many of us have probably done and was curious... The dvds that I did this to were to many people in great condition, but had bent cardboard packaging or some hairline scratches on the disk(s) so I did a little swapparoo... the disks I did this to played perfectly fine... (they made money of the rental BTW)... Most people use dvds as coasters or grab them with their cheeto hands... so I thought it wasn't that big of a deal... Have you seen the previously viewed dvds?...most of them look as if they were in grandma's attic for a while... Anyways.... now that you all think I am an idiot... at least a lot of you had a chance to find your catharsis and jump to conclusions on a guy who probably isn't that different from you...

Ooh, not bad. The official "backing-off because I'm so stupid post. I think it can be locked up now.

Also, just have to mention....I've never seen anyone use a DVD as a coaster. Ever. If I saw someone do that I'd probably slap them.

I will just comment to say.. I have for some get-togethers (actually movies to be watched later in the evening), and they are none worse for the wear. No big deal, on coaster thing, they work pretty well.

I'm amazed that anyone thinks they are somewhat fragile, or are $$$ enough to worry about.

(Oh yeah, my previous post still applies to the OP)

I've tried to use CD-Rs as coasters before, and they quickly developed green-ish/gray-ish spots on them. Pretty disgusting, so I threw them out.

When I used the word idiot I was referring to what I was called previously in the thread... Also... "using disks as coasters"...Sarcasm doesn't exactly translate that well I guess... Believe whatever you guys want... I just think a few a you are a little to quick to point the finger... I guess none of you have ever done anything remotely disshonest in your life... None of you have ever taken advantage of a missprice, bought a bottleg copy of a dvd, made your own copies of dvds, or broke a region code...

Oh, and BTW, Movie Trading Company is owned and runned by Blockbuster... If your buy a previously viewed dvd without checking it out first.... you pretty much deserve what you get.... the guys at the video store buy a lot of dvds in ten times worse condition than the ones that I am switching...

So because Movie Trading Company is owned by Blockbuster is okay to do what you are doing...

Seriously, did you actually think that you will get support/sympathy for your actions after admitting in your post that you are "stealing"?

It's amazing how many ways some people can find to rationalize theft.

No, that's what you get for trying to rationalize thievery. If you were truly an honest person you wouldn't be stealing DVD's.

(The fact that you're swapping them out for your junkers - whatever their condition - is beside the point. Try asking the rental company if they mind trading DVD's with you. I can't imagine you'd be too thrilled if you found out that a friend or roommate was surreptitiously swapping out their junkers for DVD's of yours - again, regardless of condition.)

Nice deflection.

This thread is about how YOU like to steal DVDs. YOU started it. Accept the responsibility and consequences.

OP more than likely takes his crap bootlegs and switches them out with the real thing via dvd rental store.

Not fooling anyone.

Look, let's give the benefit of the doubt here. So I think he's lying, and so do all of you, but we don't REALLY know.

But let's say he's being legit here with what he's telling us. I still think it's wrong. I wouldn't trade a perfect copy of something with one of my friends, for the same movie even if theirs was a perfect copy. I paid for what I paid for, and the company paid for what they paid for. Who are you to say 'it's ok for me to swap these discs with somebody else'? Obviously these dents or bends or scratches in the cases of yours, had to be acquired from you. If you were such a DVD-o-phile, you would obviously be buying things that are as close to mint condition as possible in stores. So you obviously incur this damage on your own. To swap out DVD's without paying for a new copy because of your OWN negligence, is just garbage. You really, REALLY should be ashamed of yourself kid, seriously.

I never have done this and your reasoning does not absolve you of what you are doing. What if one of your friends borrowed a DVD from you and switched it with his marred copy?

Usually I say live and let live but this action really bothers me.

I think it's time to finally use this smiley...

This kind of reminds me of a guy I used to know that would go take test drives of used cars, go have keys made while he's out doing it, and then going back later after the lot closes to steal them. The sumbitch was in jail the last I heard after being caught with one of these stolen cars, and that was back in '97.

I find that a lot with people who watch pirates regularly - they are prepared to out up with pixelation, poor sound, burned in subtitles etc because of the kudos of being able to say "I saw X movie last night", at which we are all supposed to say "wow, did you?"

I like to wind them up - ask them what sound format it was in, 5.1, DTS etc. People like this usually don't have any idea what the terms mean. Ask them if it's anamorphic, full frame etc...great fun.
Yep. I've got a cousin by marriage that does this. Says he gets them from his brother from "someone he knows". This habit even goes back to the VHS days. Why anyone would want a VHS bootleg, I have no idea. Talk about being double sucky.

I think this is a totally made up story to try and get a reaction from this forum. For which he succeeded.
