Church to fight spidey

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...film_church_dc

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Thomas Haden Church, who was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor in "Sideways," has been cast as Spidey's new archenemy in the next chapter of the "Spider-Man" franchise.

Director Sam Raimi made the announcement Monday along with producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.

"Spider-Man 3," which is scheduled for release May 4, 2007, will reunite the team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films, which combined to gross more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

The new film will again star Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Kirsten Dunst (news) is expected to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson. Production on "Spider-Man 3" is scheduled to begin early next year.

"In addition to the ongoing relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," Raimi said. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis, and we all look forward to working with him."

The filmmakers are not revealing the identity of the new villain.

Church is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film "Charlotte's Web," and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' "Spanglish."

So they tell us Thomas Haden Church will be a bad guy, just not which one. So we have to assume.... He looks like a Sandman or Hydro-man to me. Don't really know why I say that either. So we can assume that the lizard plot will be tossed out the window but the Harry/Goblin arc will most likely be there.

So I suppose just make a guess at who church will be.

I read the thread title, and figured that Jerry Falwell or Fred Phelps came to the conclusion that Peter Parker was gay.

Who would he play? Sandman's a possibility... I could really see him playing Eddie Brock, but I was under the impression that Sam Raimi didn't want to do Venom.

i thought it was gonna be spiderman vs. charlotte church.

who the hell is hydroman? i feel like i saw him in a megaman game.

i wonder how long they are going to go one villain at a time.

while i don't know that they were combined well, it was nice to see riddler/twoface/catwoman/penguin/joker/bane/mr freeze/posion ivy in just 4 batman movies.

at this rate, venom might not show up til 2012. yawn!

i would love to see venom, he's the coolest IMO. however, i can see the urge to not use him. he looks a hell of a lot like spawn (which makes me wonder how todd got away with that), he'd be major CG and, i dunno, how do you go from venom to hydroman?

seriously. hydroman? you must be joking.

electro, kraven?

Speaking of "Ned and Stacey" it's my understanding that "Stacey" now plays a small recurring role on "Will and Grace."

As much as I like Church as a comedic actor, can he really do drama or act evil? I think he could be the sandman.

Me too,Ned and Stacey is my favorite sitcom ever.I have always been a fan of Church,it's hard picturing him playing a villain in a Spidey flick though.

I think Church actually looks similar to Hydroman, but I think the villain will be Mysterio.

Villains like Sandman and Hydroman aren't good villains. They are just super-powered goons, and Spider-Man needs a villain who uses his mind. Green Goblin, also a businessman, was a manipulator who knew how to toy with his enemy. Doctor Octopus was a physicist, motivated and defeated by his sense of duty. Mysterio and Green Goblin II are both capable of testing Parker's brain and emotions, whereas guys like Shocker, Scorpion, Sandman, Hydroman, and Electro are not.

I take this as good news because it leads me to believe there will not be a Green Goblin in the next movie. Just a guess, though.

Hilarious misleading thread title.

I hope when they say "new" they mean "new to the movie series" not "new because we made him up for the movies." And I know Raimi said he didn't want to do Venom, but that's my guess anyway.

or it could go the route of the older "Batman" franchise where they have two super-villians. personally, i like what they have done so far with Spidey and i think at least the Green Goblin (Harry) is inevitable.

Great choice, curious who he's playing. personally I approve of Raimi's one villain per movie scenario and great casting choices like Da Foe and Molina rather than the marquee stars. I don't care to see 2-3 villains per movie, it makes it more like a video game than a movie. Character is the reason these movies have been so great to me.

I can see it now, Spidey is paralized with pain as his ears bleed when she sings at him.

Sounds great, Raimi has done an excellent job casting actors for the villans.

I'm also guessing Sandman (because he does look like him) or Mysterio (because he has a helmet and could look like anybody). Doubt if it's Venom. I still want Bruce Campbell as Kraven The Hunter, gawd effin' demmit!
Another "goblin" character could be boring for the audience.

Well, we know he's not going to be The Lizard or Man-Wolf. Given Raimi's dislike of Venom, it won't be him or Carnage. I doubt he's going to retread the first movie with The Green Goblin II, The Hobgoblin, or Jack O' Lantern. I think someone like Sin-Eater would be way too dark for a Spider-Man movie. Church is too young for The Vulture and too small for The Rhino. That leaves:

The Chameleon
Electro
Hydroman
Kraven the Hunter
Morbius
Mysterio
The Sandman
The Scorpion
The Shocker

Scratch Morbius since Artisan has the rights to him.

Did you see his breakdown scene in the hotel room in Sideways? That's the scene that almost got him the Oscar. He wasn't exactly a good guy in Sideways either - I have no questions that he can play "evil"...but probably in a more sneaky, underhanded way than we've seen in the previous Spider-Man villians.
