The DVDTalk DVD Draft Game

I’ve seen variations of this game on other forums, and thought it would be fun to try it here.

The idea behind the game is that all the players “Draft” a 10 DVD collection, and then square off to see who has the best “virtual collection”. By draft, I mean selecting one DVD at a time to add to your collection in turn.

Detailed rules:

1. Everybody takes turns “drafting” DVDs round-robin style. Once a DVD has been drafted, nobody else can select it.

2. We’ll alternate the order of the draft every other round. So if you went last in round 1, in round 2 you’ll be the first to pick.

3. Once everybody has drafted 10 DVDs, we’ll have a bracket tournament. You’ll be randomly paired up, and the forum will vote on who has the better “collection” of DVDs from the draft.

4. Restrictions:
a. No Porn
b. No box sets that contain previously-released DVDs
c. Only one movie box set per player
d. Only one television season set per player
e. R1 releases only
f. No "preorders"...a disc must be released before you can draft it.
g. No individual movies that are only available within box sets
h. Special exceptions: the following DVD's have also been excluded from the game, and may not be picked: Warner Legends, Warner Gangster Collection, Controversial Classics Collection, and Seinfeld 1-3 Gift Set. This list may be expanded at either time.
4. The bracket tourney will continue until we have a grand champion.

5. The field is limited to 32 players. Sign-ups are now closed, but there are openings for replacement players (see post below).

6. After the initial round, draft picks are "first come, first serve." Rounds begin every 24 hours at 9am Pacific (excluding weekends). The DVDTalk server clock will be the official timekeeper, so watch your timestamps! Any picks made outside the official time will be ignored. You'll need to repost them within the correct time frame.

7. If you miss two rounds in a row, I will replace you with an alternate. Alternates will enter the game in a "first come, first serve" fashion when this occurs, and will "inherit" the existing collection.

I will track draft pics in the second post of this thread. Good luck, and have fun!

Please let me know if there’s anything you don’t understand.

Draft Complete...bracket tourney begins 9/14!

While I didn't explicitly mention this in my thread, I'm going to have to disallow box sets containing previously-available DVD's.

I think the clarification that was needed dealt with how one "drafts" DVDs. For those who are not into sports, the term can not mean anything really.

How many entrants will you accept? May I suggest 10 (with 100 titles) to 12 (with 120 titles) entries?

Also, will we draft 1-10 then 10-1 and so forth? Groucho, are playing too or just being the commissioner?

I will take LOTR: FOTR EE

That does make more sense. Will we get a place to explain why our collection is better before each vote?

It sounds like it will be more of a popularity contest. Just based upon the forums opinions on everyone's movie picks.

Well that changes my strategy a little bit. I was thinking of compiling a more "Complete" collection with something for every type of mood/family member etc. Either way I'm happy with my first pick.

I think there should be an extra rule - only one box set per collection. This will even the collections out, so one team cannot have 40 DVD's (10 picks x lets say 4 dvd's per set) and another only 10 (10 individual titles).
