I've never seen El Topo but would welcome the opportunity. I understand various gray market and foreign DVD editions have been available but this sounds like it clears the way for an eventual Region 1 DVD release.

I just read that on Mobius too. I can't believe that these releases could finally happen. It sounds bad, but I was almost hoping Klein would kick the bucket so that things could finally be worked out. 
Great news, and no one had to die. 
Now, I wonder who will buy the DVD distribution rights for these films. A major studio? I doubt it (unless one of their "art house" divisions do. Oh please, not Miramax!). Anchor Bay? Criterion? Blue Underground?

My wish list:
1) that ABKCO has good picture and sound elements to work from
2) That El Topo has the original Spanish track, subs and title sequence to choose instead of the far inferior English dub
3) that Jodorowsky and them do some really nice supplements (even just a AJ commentary track would be priceless--the Fando Y Lis disc was proof of that!)
4) that they get here ASAP so a whole new generation can be infected by this man's divine madness

GREAT NEWS ...., i own the italian version of el topo and holy mountain and there is no foggy nudity in that one. however the transfer is bad .

i suspect this to be with Criterion, if a bidding war occurs, I would think they would be the one with enough credits, plus I would assume Allan Klein would go with them also for the companies reputation. Fantoma would be nice, for they could really use a blockbuster like thse titles to put their company on the map.

Wow, I never thought this would ever come out. Great news indeed. I remember going on eBay in '94 and one of the first things I ever looked for was a copy of El Topo on VHS.

I doubt I would double dip on it if it does come out R1 unless it offered something the R2 doesn't have.This is very good news. Hopefully now we can finally get good quality releases of these two films. I can't wait till more info gets out.

Regardless who releases them..it will be nice to have releases that are fully uncensored and have a decent PQ and audio.

SANTA SANGRE is owned by MGM in the US, as solmeone I know at AB looked into it, and told me thats why they couldnt release it in the US.
Now if MGM is smart, they can release all three, and since they can sell them cheaper, it will be easier on the wallet for all of us!

RARO "Remasters"
Just purchased the remastered set from Raro video--Italy. El Topo was basically fine, but The Holy Mountain is a disaster. The disc shiimers as if it were mastered from a video copy, and shows noticeable stuttering, especially during pans. Anybody else share this opintion?

On a television. The shimmering I am referring to occurrs specifically in the checkered pattern on the walls of the first scene.
Others have confirmed that the stuttering--the jerkiness during pan shots---- is due to a bad NTSC to PAL conversion in the transfer itself.

I don't really think that those Raro releases were 100% legimate anyway, and I've heard that they weren't the greatest looking transfers. I'm just hanging on to my Japanese Amuse VHS prerecords of the two films until a definitive DVD release finally rears its head (hopefully with full involvement of Jodorowsky.

For a long time, it seemed as though a few of Jodorowsky's films were destined to become the kind of quasi-mythical relics that the director revels in. Ex-Beatles manager Allen Klein, who got turned on to the filmmaker by John Lennon in the early '70s, has long owned the rights to The Holy Mountain and El Topo, the 1970 film that first brought Jodorowsky to a wide audience, and until recently was determined to bury the pictures, refusing to issue proper home video or DVD versions. The two adversaries have now at least partially settled their differences, setting up a limited theatrical re-release of the two films in November, with official DVD releases to follow.

I already posted this on the movie forum, but for those in the Toronto area, Jodorowsky will be attending the Rue Morgue horror convention this weekend. On Saturday he will be doing autograph sessions, and on Sunday night, he will be screening two of his films at the Bloor Cinema: THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and SANTA SANGRE, complete with presentations before and after the films. Should be interesting.
