Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Abrams, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

Glad you could clear that up for us.

As someone who has only seen the original trilogy two or three times - and who thinks that only the first two are any good - I thought this was pretty...

Re: It Follows (2014)

Going to a midnight screening of this at Sundance. I quite enjoyed the director's (non-horror) Myth of the American Sleepover, and I've also heard really good things about this one.

Re: 2015 Academy Award Nominees are.....

"Princess Kaguya" is my favorite movie of the year - and it's the most beautiful new movie I've seen in several years - so here's hoping that wins in its category. But it probably won't.

It's a...

Re: The Last 5 Years (2014, D: LaGravenese), S: Kendrick, Jordan)

I saw a local (live) production of this a few months ago. I liked it a lot - it has a really gorgeous score - but it's also one of those shows I don't think I could watch very often. It's just so...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I do wish there were more new titles (only two this month - and last month), but all the upgrades are favorites that I don't already own on DVD, so I won't complain. It'll be especially great to see...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Cool month. I've been waiting to own a copy of Breaking the Waves, and more Dreyer and Siegel films are always welcome.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

So... We're finally going to get that Picnic at Hanging Rock upgrade.

Also excited to see "confirmation" of some Demy titles - I'd love to see Umbrellas of Cherbourg, one of the most gorgeous...

Re: Joan Fontaine passes away at 96

And her performance in that film is one of the very greatest in film history, in my opinion. (Her performance in Letter from an Unknown Woman is nearly as great.)

She did live a very long life,...

Re: Hot lesbians win Palme d'Or at Cannes

It's being released at the art house here in Salt Lake City next week, so it's at least getting something of a national release.

On the other hand, it was banned in Idaho...

Bump...

Not surprisingly, I also really enjoyed this.

I've always loved the score (though I prefer the OBC to any of the heavily revised revival recordings) - but the productions I've seen have...

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

My problem with Armond White isn't that he dislikes popular films (I often agree with his "contrarian" opinion) - it's that he's a terrible writer and he tends to spend more time condemning people...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Well, I'm not at all concerned with whether or not it's "fit" for the collection, but I do find this "classic" spectacularly unfunny - in spite of it being filled to the brim with extremely funny and...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

IAMMMMW is the one from the batch I almost certainly won't be buying - but it does contain the full 197 minute theatrical version restored by Robert Harris, which hasn't been on any of the other DVD...

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

Well, movies on Blu-ray aren't really an "essential" product, so it probably doesn't qualify under the technical definition of price gouging anyways.

But I think it's simple economics: Some...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

I'd say there are actually some pretty major titles in that lineup - particularly Zulu and Crimes and Misdemeanors.

The Front and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot are also both really good (if not as...

Re: DVDs, Materialism, & the Concept of Ownership

Well, to be fair, I think the concern - which I sort of share - is that streaming sort of feels like a step backwards in the A/V department. Up until very recently, all the new home video formats...

Re: DVDs, Materialism, & the Concept of Ownership

Well, since my last (overly aggressive) posts on the subject, my thoughts have evolved a little bit. I still really enjoy getting physical copies of movies that I value – and I’m not willing to pay...
