Very surprised David Oyelowo didn't get a nod for playing MLK Jr in a movie nominated for Best Picture. Best Actor was just a very crowded field this year, as usual.

Also very strange that Foxcatcher was strong enough to get a Director nod but didn't even make it into an open BP slot.

A few observations on the Oscar noms...

-Jake Gyllenhaal was fucking robbed.

-Selma doesn't earn a single major nomination, and still gets a Best Picture nomination.

-Foxcatcher earns Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Original Screenplay nominations, but fails to get a Best Picture nomination.

-The Academy really didn't care much for Gone Girl.

-Based on the 30+ year old Editing theory, it looks like Best Picture is between Boyhood, Grand Budapest Hotel, and Imitation Game.

-A Most Violent Year is shutout. I thought that was supposed to be a contender.

No major box office hits make it in this year. It looks like a rather weak group of BP nominees compared to years past. There's no major heavyweights.

I'll be pulling for The Imitation Game. And I hate Wes Anderson, so that's who I'm rooting against. Otherwise, I'm not too concerned about any of the other races.

Who thought the day would come when we would forever see - Steve Carrel - Oscar Nominated Actor - on marquees for the rest of days?

Jake G. got absolutely robbed but I'm not sure who I would take from that list other than Cooper. But Cooper is such a company man it's not hard to see why he got the cut. Also, American Sniper is much more recent than Nightstalker. The heat probably got him the nod.

The only nomination it received besides Best Picture was Best Song.

It got 4 - Cinematography, Original Score, Production Design, and Costume Design.

This is just one of those years where the group of films are sort of blah. It reminds me of the year Slumdog won over Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, and The Reader. That was a very uninspiring group of films.

Foxcatcher is a very uneven movie and does not deserve BP. I will say that Selma doesn't deserve any nominations at all really. Insanely overrated movie.

What in the hell? How many of the nominees in BP have you even seen? This is a strong group of movies. I've seen all except Selma, and they are all good films. Some even very good. The year you mentioned isn't even in the same league, they may as well have not held the Oscars that year.

American Sniper will be, it opens this weekend (wide).

I'd like Wes Anderson to win a Best Director award, as Grand Budapest was pretty fantastic, but I think Linklater is a lock and Boyhood will win Best Picture.

Some really good movies in there, but none are majorily mainstream (odd seeing a Wes Anderson movie being the most successful of any group). But then, what major movie was worth a damn this year? Guardians was fun, but that aside it was sort of a shit year for major motion pictures.
